Aight so this post is really long, probably my longest yet, but it gets pretty interesting so if you've got a moment, get a coffee or a tea or a hot chocolate or something because it'll take a bit to read through. It's cool though so it's worth it. The geology of Denmark proper is fairly boring, unless you're a sedimentary geologist, which I am not. Sure, it's got some interesting fossils, and one of the rock layers has something really cool called an iridium anomaly (which I'll explain at the end of this comment), but for the most part it's mostly just sedimentary rocks, sedimentary rocks and more sedimentary rocks, with a little bit of faulting and folding to add a *little* bit of flavour. It's literally just a billion years of sedimentary rocks. The geology of the Faroe Islands is a bit more interesting. North America and Europe began moving apart about 170 million years ago but until about 58 million years ago, the northernmost extent was still closed and Greenland was pressing against Europe. At 58 million years ago, it's believed that the Icelandic hot spot began forming, and according to one theory (my personal favourite), the amount of heat and upwelling it induced on the surface caused Greenland to begin rifting from Europe. Evidence for this is that there are volcanic rocks in eastern Greenland that are very similar to some in Norway. Initially, this plume generated a vast amount of material (mostly runny basalts but also some more sticky/explosive lavas at times), which formed a huge plateau that now contains both the Faroe Islands and Rockall, and a handful of other tiny islets. Most of this plateau is now under sea level. A period of low volcanic activity in the Faroes allowed large volumes of coal to form there, which were subsequently buried by more lava. The volcanism in the Faroes ended about 54 million years ago and since then the main geological processes that have affected it have been erosion (from air and sea primarily, and ice during the ice ages). Greenland is more interesting than the Faroes again. It's absolutely ancient-its rocks are among the oldest in the world at just shy of 4 billion years old, and along with parts of eastern Canada it made up one of the first supercontinents (Laurentia). Its rocks have been folded and faulted and metamorphised a LOT. There's flood basalts in parts of the island (basically events where huge volumes of runny lava erupted over a relatively short period of time), and it also has a couple examples of something called a layered igneous complex or layered intrusion-it's effectively the fossil of the magma chamber of an ancient volcano. It's layered because as the magma cools, different minerals crystallise at different temperatures because they have different melting points, and so the magma separates into layers of different mineralogical compositions. Most layered igneous complexes have mafic/ultramafic composition (which means they would have erupted very runny lava). Greenland has a large number of layered igneous complexes, including one called Skaergaard and one called Ilimaussaq, and the Ilimaussaq intrusion unusually has an alkali composition (i.e. not mafic/ultramafic), including some really rare and weird minerals (some of which are found nowhere else on Earth iirc). Another area of Greenland, with the amazing name of Disko Bay, also has something called native iron-iron which comes out of the ground in metal form rather than locked in ores while not having originated in meteors. This is incredibly rare; the only other significant native iron deposit in the world that I know of was in Germany, and it was way smaller and was depleted centuries ago. On top of this, all of this information is coming from just the outer edges of Greenland-80% of the rock is covered in ice, where we can't reach it. There's probably shit-tons of cool stuff there that we just can't see. The ice also is so heavy that it weighs down the middle of the island and literally bends it, so much so that if all of the ice just disappeared the middle of Greenland would be below sea level (and when the ice all melts, central Greenland will be flooded and thus we will be unable to access the rocks again :/ ). Alright, so back to the iridium anomaly! When the Earth was first forming, it was a fairly constant mix of elements, but early on most of the volume of all of the heaviest elements and the elements that like to bind to them sank to the centre to form the core. This included most of the iron, nickel, uranium and a whole bunch of other elements, including almost all of an element called iridium. Thus, we don't have much iridium near the surface anymore. However, meteors and asteroids have a fairly similar composition to the total of the Earth, so they've got significant amounts of iridium in them and since they're small enough to not have formed a core like Earth, their iridium is all throughout them. When an asteroid impacts with the Earth, it deposits that iridium around the impact site. If that impact is large enough, it deposits that iridium all around the Earth in a layer. Every major impact event has a signature iridium layer. The most significant one that I know of in Denmark is the one that originated in the K-T boundary impact-the Chicxulub asteroid, the one that killed the dinosaurs. The impact for that event happened all the way in Yucatan in Mexico.

Wouldn't playing as Gotland be faster? After you reform Denmark you pretty much instantly get ratified Kalmar union reform since Gotland missions make you skip all Sweden events?

i actually agree. i did a no allies gotland run, not even trying to speedform and got it done as fast as quarbit. it might not be theoretically faster, although if you get allies it should be, but it certainly less dependent upon rng. Aside from that, the first war against denmark is super fun and challenging at the same time. I had to lure away the troops of the danes and allies from sjaelland and then quickly land and assault to win it. quite a tense moment

How do you become hre emperor. In my recent campaign, I was playing an orthodox nation. Brandenburg was my pu, trier was my ally, and I converted 2 of the remaining 5 electors to my religion before the religious wars. In other words I had very friendly relationships with majority of the electors, but no one wanted to vote for me. This was after treaty of west phalia.

Electors decide by reasons, which you can see in the HRE menu. Notably, non-members get a -50 malus, while large nations in the empire get +50. So likely, the key countries (Austria/Bohemia, sometimes Brandenburg) have 100 points just from that. In your case, your PU over brandenburg gives him 50 reasons to vote for you, but all other electors get -50. That may be your biggest problem. Either integrate to solve that, or get more vassal-electors. You can see the further reasons: max relations, get ally and RM, be of the same religion, culture, full legitimacy, full prestige, diplomatic reputation. Beyond that, it really depends what your problem is. If you're far behind, you just gotta up your own game (since likely several countries are preferred). If electors all vote for the emperor and you're close behind, you might kneecap the emperor. If they prefer another ortho, try cutting those alliances and relations (favors can be useful, if timed correctly). If the electors are severely split, just focus on getting a few. And note that sometimes electors get ambitious. If they have someone else's backing or strategic reasons to want to become emperor, they will not vote for you either way. One more trick: being at war with someone gives a -200 malus for elections, so you might ally several electors and declare war on the competition when the emperor is old.
