You must confront your fear head on. Go volunteer in nursing homes and with the dying. That's what I do and it changed my life. Don't waste a single moment of your life doing something you aren't passionate about or not working towards a goal you're passionate about. There is no guarantee you will have time to do everything you want to do.

For me aging or becoming an elder isn’t scary mainly because I look at it is another day I get to live, another present . It’s really I feel about your perspective on the matter. Being old doesn’t scare me it’s not like I can stop it from happening so why give energy to a fear on a subject that isn’t going to change. The outcome is going to stay the same rather I’m afraid or not . I look at this with anything .

This was great. I’m 25 & I’ve been feeling so down. Working in the state government for 5 years, everyone telling me I have a great job, pressure of management to encourage me to keep promoting within the company, family telling me to go back to school, etc. This is everyone around me defining success for me. And I’ve listened until now. It’s a scary part of my life because I don’t know what to do. But I know I’m not happy. I need to do something about this. Thank you so much. You are completely right. It’s not always about knowing what we DO WANT, sometimes it’s simply just knowing what we DON’T WANT. I needed to hear that. Thank you again.

As a millennial, I agree to what she said. I'm at this point right now where I want to make a shift in my career. I'm not so sure how to do that, but I'm pretty sure I'm on my way. True! The pressure from society and my peers is no joke. Especially when people about your age -or younger- seem to have achieved success, while your here being "nothing" next to them. That's why I -almost- quit social media. At least I don't post those unrealistically always-happy posts. More importantly, I've minimized consuming other people's posts. I do take a bit of inspiration and check to see what people are doing just to keep me motivated and on my feet. But whenever I feel unhealthy, I leave. My advice is to take things easy. Comparing yourself to other people and pushing yourself or beating it too hard for not making it will not get you anywhere. It might actually slow you down or hurt you. Take your time crafting the kind of life that suits you. One thing at a time. Start by finding what appeals to you the most and what is it that you feel you need to do or want to do. Right them down, prioritize them, then decide which one are you willing to do to make a living. All of this on your own accord, no one else's. Then create a plan to achieve what you want one by one and GET ON IT! Repeat this process every now and then and keep updating, because nothing stays the same. p.s. Some times you will need to make changes to fit other people in your life (e.g. family responsibilities ..etc), make changes according to that too. I thought I'd share the knowledge I have. Good luck everyone. You're not alone.

Most of us are not worried about keeping up with appearances. We are mostly worried about trying to pay off our student debt, afford housing, health insurance, saving for retirement, and wanting to start a family. This economy that the Boomers created has stunted that for us.

She could not have said more of a true reflection of the nature of a "millennial" life right now. It is harder for us I feel, in a lot of ways because we have developed new ways of thinking of what success really means to us and to the world. Why should we live a life of routine, when in our hearts we want to create a life of love in all things we do as well as express our own unique self to the world.

I left my job almost three years ago and now run my own start up. Haven't had any severe illness in all this time outside of corporate. It's much harder on your own (especially financially) but you eventually get the hang of it. Life is so much better and healthier on your own terms

I resonate with the message a lot right now in my life. I'm 27, working in my second job out of college and feel so unhappy/unfulfilled. A big part of me wishes I had chosen a different career path but what the speaker said is so true. We're getting paid a lot less than people our age did back in the day, and we're more educated ; more in debt. Its a challenge. I don't want to throw away my education but at the same time my happiness is the most important of all. Feeling very stuck on what step to take next :(

I totally agree, I've inherited quite a bit of money which gave me the opportunity to find my luck as an entrepreneur. Having said that, if you want you can minimize your costs. Rent is much cheaper in a small town or in the countryside. You can grow your own food. Buy a used car. Making these choices you can lower your cost dramatically. Having children cost a lot though, so no children.

@@michaltakac673 "change the circumstances you've got yourself into, instead of whining." You have no idea what caused the circumstances the person you've replied to has described. Does insulting people who are going through rough situations make you feel better? Does it make you feel like the bigger person? What's the purpose? You're not saying anything useful, just rubbing salt into the wounds. You just seem like a privileged person looking down on someone who grew up in a completely different situation and environment than yourself. Maybe you should think about making changes in your own life.

@@tammyton Salt hurts, but actually heals wounds. Maybe if you read the whole statement instead of just the part that was triggering for you it would be evident that he was encouraging her to do something to "change her circumstances" aka take responsibility for one's own life, Instead of stewing in the pain as unless that ends up motivating someone to act, it can be an endless cycle. He was doing something their parents probably didn't do, which is why they are in their current predicament. Tough love is real love

Thank you for sharing your story! I’m 24 and had to move back in with my family bc of covid, and my jobs slowed. I’m part time serving and part time clerk at a courthouse. I’m miserable, and I feel stuck. I also did one semester of college and stopped, years ago. I want more than anything to go back, I’ll tell people that’s my plan. The truth is, I still don’t know what I want to go for.. your story makes me want to delete Instagram and fb.. you made me realize how much I compare myself to others and how easy it is with these apps. Maybe I’m so stuck on one thing (a college degree) I’m missing what might be right in front of me. And I will still go to college, no matter what. But maybe that won’t define me as a successful person, you made me realize that thank you

I went to college and worked all throughout school and graduated with no debt. I was passionate about a certain industry, started from the bottom working as a receptionist, got certifications and climbed the ladder to gain a very professional position (flew all over, gave financial presentations etc). Then, got laid off because that entire industry failed. They laid off hundred. Now, I’m back at school again with 18 year olds, taking basic classes and redoing my entire career. I can’t tell you how stressful and sad it has made me feel. I could go back and work my entire life making basic money in another industry, but I want better. This whole thing has postponed my dreams of buying a house or having children. It’s devastating because I followed all the ‘rules’ and still fell flat on my face. I think I have really bad luck.

I’m in college with a bunch of young recent high school grads as well, and honestly it’s not uncommon anymore. The job market is volatile these days with the spectrum of industries changing constantly. I wish I already had a degree too, but I also was in a career field that was not long term sustainable. I would like to at least have the option of having kids in the near future but that’s not something you can really plan for. Just remember you’re not alone and we all have to make up life as we go and remain adaptable. To live is to risk it all.

All Ted videos are so inspiring, because they are gentle, kind, and accepting of differences. I think Millenials are worthy of sympathy, in fact, I think they have been dealt a very bad hand, with false optimism from their parents & teachers (Baby Boomers, good for them that the Silent Generation sets them up for the American Dream, but now completely unachievable for their kids). The system sorts of fails them & now it's not fair they take the blame, especially considering the 2008 & 2020 crisis outside of their control. This video is relevant, as success metrics need redefining: ok with having less, not being exceptional, with an ordinary life. There are beauty in realizing all of this :) good luck to us millennials!

Massive amounts of student loan debt, entering the workforce when the job market was at its worst, barriers to affordable healthcare (in the United States), and high-stress jobs that pay too little are likely the reasons behind most millennials' crises, if they have one. Oddly enough, many of these factors are even mentioned in the talk. Despite stress and illness, the stronger message is that leaving school at 18 gave our speaker the life experience and (more unusually) the MONEY she needed to kickstart her dream. I like the message of this TED talk for young people coming out of high school. As a millennial, I don't find it relative or representative of our generation's experience.

it doesn't help if you have a family and a retrograde society hounding it on your mind 24/7 what you should be, why, and why what you wish to do won't work. In such cases for me, I was put in a crisis before the quarter one where I had to... basically choose me over them. It was painful. Because emotionally I had to make them.. ineffective, irrelevant. Like amputating a piece of your heart. It was the only way. And now that I am in this quarter-life crisis it does help to not have them around telling me in passive aggressive, subtle joke and mocking remarks AAAALLL day what a failure I am.

Starting @16:06, she throws the strongest point: We experience stress, regardless if we choose the number 1 thing we think is the most fun in the world, or whether we let society, friends, family, environment etc. weigh in and send us in the direction of a perhaps "smarter", but very requiring job. It seems she went from the 'smart' job, to what she conceived as the most fun and fulfilling job. That is untill she realized that being an actress means rejection that most likely causes the same amount of stress, that her previous job did. Although likely in different forms. Having dealt with stress myself, and still spending time understanding it, and getting better, I think I've learned the following: It is not necessarily about removing yourself from the situation that causes stress, as having a job, a spouse, a family, aging and more, will cause you stress. It is about managing that stress, so it does not 'hurt' you. So you need to learn the right tools, techniques and thought patterns. If all these tools have been used, and you still feel a level of stress that is undesirable to YOU, you definitely should get out of that job. Don't be miserable. And losing a job is not that big. But start by learning to handle your stress.

Think the problem is super fast success leads to a shallowness in life. The process of reaching success is usually what makes life meaningful and bearable, even if the process sucks. For most people, success occurs around their mid 30's to 45. At those ages, the mid-life crisis occurs. So not surprising she experiences a quarter-life crisis.

I feel like I’ve been stuck in all aspects of my life. I’m 32 and I still don’t know what it is I wanna do. I’m in school but I’m not confident about my major. I’ve been at my job for 7 years and I absolutely am burned out and hate it now. I get anxiety sometimes before I have to come. I just want some type of break through. It feels like I’m just here and not living. It feels like I’ll never have that nice car, house or life partner.

I should be graduating this year like expected. But I changed my major about 3x. I’m actually happy in my current major and don’t feel as much anxiety as before with the others. With the first major I had, my anxiety and depression were at their worst. I’ve been healing so much lately and I’m proud of me. I don’t care if I graduated later than most. A lot of my older tinder dates (the 24-28 yr olds) are in the midst of changing their paths bc they feel unhappy where they’re at. I’m working hard and it’s extremely hard, but the difference between this hard and the hard with the other majors is that it wasn’t what I was passionate about, therefore letting my mental state take control. I’m working on studying for the PTCB exam this summer to become a certified tech on top of getting my associates in chemistry while working part time. Then I plan on getting my bachelors and hopefully going abroad for a semester during that. For anyone in a rut, don’t worry. Just pick up a couple new things here and there. That’ll help you realize what your likes and dislikes are. Also, put your mental health and physical health first!

It's a great idea, a great message... Doesn't totally work for Americans, just due to the unfortunate basic reality of out-of-pocket medical costs, student loans, and rent. Apart from that, I struggle with the 'give yourself permission' part. I'm plenty brave, plenty self-confidant (about certain things) but there's just this wall up around the idea that, if I tell it to myself, it's meaningful. I seem to be hard-wired for the idea that meaning comes from other people, not in a social-media-validation way but in a helping-your-community way. I suppose the way around that wall is to find the right community?

People came up with this term Quarter Life crisis, but it`s very misleading. It suggest a particular age. But this crisis that many millennials experience is actually the same crisis that our parents and previous generations experienced around midlife. This is when they question things for the first time and this is when they change their directions in life and start a new chapter. Millennials are basically going through an early midlife crisis. It`s all about the developmental stages of human beings. We humans evolve, and the next generations are getting to the same level at a faster rate...so that they evolve further than the previous generations.

There's something missing from all these quarter life crisis videos... DEATH... at this age you are becoming far more aware of mortality and are no longer defined by your youth. A lot of these themes are diversions from the real issue.
