A look at the Ozone Turbo Bar. And yes I know, I talk far too much!! This is my favorite way of flying my fixed bridles in the buggy. It doesn't suit all fixed bridles - just those that react well to being steered mainly by brake line. It's about a 50/50 - 60/40 split between brake lines and power lines. Hopefully, this will give you a good look at it and what it does and doesn't do.

Ok thanks for the reply so soon! I've been considering an Ozone Method 6.5 as my next kite so ill defiantly get to try it on that.

Great videos. Really informative. I'd be great if you made more with techniques and the like on both handles and bars. I hope to recreate this bar in an upcoming project.

For static flying, no - handles are lighter, cheaper and easier to manage. You can certainly take the weight off your arms with the turbo bar (and don't forget to price in a harness) but that really only becomes an advantage for long sessions particularly on a landboard or buggy. I like to buggy for several hours at a time and wave a camera around - so the turbo bar is ideal for me. But for most static sessions I would just use handles. Hope that helps - cheers. John.

Hi Matt. The slack brake lines will be slowing down your turns and making it hard to land. I used some 1.5mm Spectra that I picked up from a boat shop, but 2 or 3mm Polyester would be ok too. I often pull the bar in during a turn to speed the turn up then immediately let the bar out again - helps the kite zip around. Thanks for the kind words and have fun with the Octane. - John.

I have an Ozone SB base harness and a Dakin Speed Seat - both are quite good with a preference towards the speed seat being a bit more comfy. A friend has the Peter Lynn Divine which he really likes too.

The only 'tweak' I've done is to add the 5" pigtails to the ends of the power lines (which you can do at either end of the line) which gives me the correct brake tension. With the bar out, I like to have just a tiny bit of tension on the trailing edge - just enough to take up any slack. I'm not sure that all turbo bars will require the extra 5" on the power lines - I know of maybe 3 or 4 others like mine that had really slack brakes. That's about it - apart from a few hours to get use to it.

Depends on what part of the world you're in. In Aus, I get Ozone stuff from Kitepower. In US you could try Coastal Wind Sports or A Wind of Change and Power Kite Shop in the UK

Yeah, most PL stuff that I've flown does like more front line input rather than brakes. My 3m Hornet was OK on the bar, the 5m was a bit iffy.

Very tricky to actually adjust one, then the other while flying. I tend to land the kite, then adjust if not right and try again.

Hi Jon, after watching all your videos I bit the bullet and bought an Octane 4m, turbo bar and SB harness. After my first flight yesterday in 3-10 knots (gusty) I have also noticed very slack brake lines even when pulled in tight on the trim tabs. Experience aside, is this affecting the kites turning speed? What cord do you recommend for the power line extensions? Great videos by the way, essential for someone new like me, cheers.

Hi John, love all your kiting tutorial videos m8! Just one question, here In the uk it's getting harder to find these Ozone Turbo Bars, what would you recommend as an equivalent to use on a Beamer 4m and Ozone Flow 5m? Thanks in advance and keep up the good Work! BTW what's happened to the Ozzy national rugby team m8 ???😆😆

What rugby team? Do we play rugby? Just kidding but I've never had an interest in it. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, Ozone discontinued quite a few good products including the turbo bar. Peter Lynn make a crossover bar that looks very, very similar and while I've never used one, I think it would do the same job. Let me know how you get on with it. Cheers - J.

I had the same issue and tried to tie extra knots on the trailing edge bridles. Never thought of what you suggested. How long are the pigtails?

BTW....the kite is my original 2.5m Ozone Imp Quattro. It's a little beaten up these days and will hardly pull the skin off a rice pudding, but it's just the ticket when I'm standing in amongst a heap of sheep poo and don't wish to go A over T!

It goes reasonably well with the Hornet. But occasionally the Hornet will 'hesitate' after a turn before it starts to fly back across the window. You can feel that a little air has gone out of the sail because the turbo bar turns with a little more brake input than the Hornet likes. It will be OK, just not quite as good as some other kites on the turbo bar.

Ok thnx, because on both side of the brakes ( between the pully and the bar) are straps u can use. U can it to "tweak" it during the flight. It can improve flight, if u know what u are doing. (Last one is the tricky part).

Never had the chance to fly an Ace, but If the Ace responds well to turning mostly with the brakes, it should be ok. If it prefers front line input for turning then a standard bar may be a better choice.

Hi quedecree, nice video. You mention in the video that not all kites fly (well) on the Ozone Turbo (or Peter Lynn crossover bar). How do you know which ones do and which one not, before you buy one? (Or hopefully the kite expert shops know this and they sell it only together with kites where it works). One other thing I also didn't get, that you were showing. At a moment you said like: "pull the bar" and then the kite would land. I don't understand that. Shouldn't pulling the bar generate more power (similar to depower bars) instead of making the kite land ? Thanks a lot Cheers Baloo (I go for the crossover bar btw)
@quedecree
@quedecree 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Baloo, thanks for your comments. It is very difficult to know which kites will fly well on this setup - it all depends on how much brake input the kite likes - PL Reactors and PKD Century's do not fly well with this style of bar. Unless the retailer/sales person has actually tried the combination, they may not know how suitable it would be. In regards to pulling the bar and landing - with the turbo bar, you're effectively pulling on more brake - if the kite is not going fast enough, it will stall and land. If it is going fast enough, it will likely pull a bit harder. The kite is really just a wing and pulling brakes is like adding flaps to a wing - it can create more lift/power providing you're going fast enough....if not, it stalls and falls out of the sky.

Hi Michal. I'm afraid I haven't had a turbo bar for many years, but I did make one up out of some dowell and cordage based purely on a picture of a turbo bar and it worked surprisingly well. The main thing is if your brake lines are too short, you'll be constantly pulling the brakes. With the bar out, you want the brake lines just a little slack. Here's a really old video of my home made bar..... vimeo.com/manage/videos/4922938 Good luck! edit: I hope that link works - I might have to upgrade the Vimeo account to access and send links. If it doesn't you might have to do what I did and just guess the measurements from a picture.

Sail? It's an Ozone Imp 2.5m and I got it from Kitepower in Geelong, Vic, Aus. I'm afraid Ozone no longer make that model of kite and Kitepower in Geelong closed down a few years back. I think there's still a Kitepower shop in Sydney an they could advise you of a similar model - an HQ Beamer, Peter Lynn Hornet or Flexifoil Rage or Sting would all be quite similar.

Hi Dan, I don't think Ozone have made the Turbo Bar for a few years but Peter Lynn made a similar bar a few years ago called a Crossover Bar. These are listed on both Briskites and Kitepower in Aus, but of course, not in stock :) I've never used one but they look like the same thing.
