This was an Italian queen found in a feral colony in South Mississippi during a bee colony removal from a residence and relocation to an apiary.
A virgin queen does not develop a retinue. This only occurs after she has mated and returns to the colony to take over as matriarch. In order to keep the queen laying eggs and to promote population growth for generational balance and survival, the retinue feeds her, cleans her and rubs her thorax with their antennae to transfer her pheromones throughout the colony.
