This rare and fragile dress once belonged to Queen Charlotte. It is currently on display at #KewPalace, on loan from the Fashion Museum Bath, to mark 200 years since Queen Charlotte’s death at Kew in November 1818 and her sons’ double wedding in July 1818. Curator Polly Putnam tells us more. See the dress this summer: bit.ly/kewpalace

The amount of work that went into a dress like this that is completely covered in lace with decorative lace edging to boot is just mind-blowing, it's really hard to comprehend. This may not look that lavish to the modern eye but if you know the value of lace before the industrial revolution this dress appears incredibly royal.

So appearently Queen Charlottw initially was not a fan of the empire dress look and required the courtiers to wear english court dress (a super wacky hybrid of regency and Georgian style) that disgrace that is bridgerton in the season debut scene when the ladies are being presented to the Queen they are wearing french style court dress.

Amazing lacework! I crochet and tat, but never could use the extremely fine threads required for something like this. So much is taken for granted nowadays, and there’s no appreciation for the older art forms. Thanks for sharing this.

Good you will get a better education on regency life that they completely bypassed in that show. It was cute but so many missed opportunities for making the costumes a bit more accurate. I appreciate the stylistic choices but details details details

What I love about shows from other centuries are the clothes. when I was a young adult I wish we could still wear clothes like that. To feel so beautiful and feminine. I would still wear one on a special occasion but now I'm happy that we don't have to wear anything like that as hot as it is. They must have been sweltering in clothes during the summer time.

Like many others I came on here to see her dress from that time.. and me and everyone else were commenting on it. But somehow of course there's got to be that one person that's not going to see anyting except what colors she was. Instead of the hand detailed lace he's actually wondering why the present royal family is white since their descendant from Queen Charlotte. So obviously he's disappointed that that they're so white.

You don't think this is the dress of Princess Charlotte, daughter of George 4th? She died in childbirth which necessitated the marriage of the Duke and the later birth of Victoria. The Former Princess Heir wore dresses this style. I don't know that old Queen Charlotte kept this advanced fashion. All her portraits show her in 18th century fashion.

it's been confirmed that queen charlotte wore it, it was found in her wardrobe which was in her chamber. there is a portrait of her wearing this style, but it is not this exact dress. although they have found princess charlotte's wedding dress. so this has been confirmed was queen charlotte's dress. :)

chardy Macdennis It depends on what you are used to. In the U.K. background music is common on Documentaries so the ear gets attuned to blocking it out and just listening to the dialogue, if you’re not used to it, it must be very distracting.

How about reading up on these topics? The internet is a fantastic tool for expanding your knowledge. It would be a much more productive use of your time than trolling other commentators.

it's not confirmed. but most historians say it's false. her heritage is german, english, french, italian, and a little bit of hungarian, those explain her features. her black ancestor lived 500 years before she was born, her immediate family were white. historians have disproven the theory multiple times.
