Love the fact that the Queen drove herself when she could and enjoyed it. Just one of those little things that made Her Majesty relatable to the common man. Everybody knows she learned to drive because she volunteered during the war, which I think speaks volume about her character cause she didn't have to volunteer.

And she drove at least 4 big Vauxhall estates over the years: Cresta, Viscount, Viceroy and Carlton. Not posh coachbuilt shooting brakes. We're talking straightforward cars made by General Motors, who also made Vivas, Chevettes and Astras. And Bedford lorries of course, that the Queen would have driven during the War. Having said that, pre-1926, before GM purchased Vauxhall, they made prestigious cars and were a favourite of the Russian royal family.

Until the advent of electric cars it was quite unusual to have automatic cars here in the UK. And they were more expensive to buy and run. Also if you take your test in an automatic car in the UK you're not licensed to drive a manual so it would be pretty restrictive. For those reasons, it is standard for everyone to learn and take their test in a manual car.

0:20 As an American who drives on the "right" side of the road with the steering on the left side of the car, I always wondered if British cars, with steering wheels on their right side, also had a reversed gearshift pattern for manual transmissions. Finally, it was the Queen herself who has now shown me that the gearbox shift pattern is identical to right and left side steering configurations. Notice at 0:48 she also down-shifts well too. Her training and experience as a maintenance and auto repair mechanic during WW II gave her a great love of cars and driving them.

- With 'modern' manual transmission cars the pedal placement and transmission pattern is the same regardless if the car is LHD or RHD. In cars made prior to the 1960's, when those things became more harmonized, there were some differences, but most are fairly minor. With pre-war cars (before WW2), there were a LOT more variations when it came to pedal placement, shift patterns, handbrake placement, etc. How do I know? Had the opportunity to drive both sides in a prior auto dealership job and before that working with an auction house that sold numerous vintage cars. At the dealership sometimes we got to service Mercedes-Benz diplomatic & consular vehicles from the UK & Ireland.
