As so many others have said, Freddie Mercury was incredible and George Michael's version was an incredible tribute. There is nobody past or present who could've done that song justice other than George Michael.

Stop all this nonsense with the comparisons! They were both great in their own right- no one could have done better than George at Freddie's memorial, and I don't think how one or the other sang at a memorial should be a judge...Nope not me.😢

George Michael was without doubt the best singer of the day at Freddie's memorial concert. He outsang every "rock legend" that appeared on the day. Both magnificent singers. Probably the greatest of our generation.

@@apoeclipse yes but go back and listen to Elton John dropping parts of Bohemian rhapsody an octave that he could reach. It was horrible. I think Roger Daltrey and Robert Plant were awful too. I've never liked or rated Daltrey, but like a lot of Elton John's music. I thought it just demonstrated the immense talent and diversity of George Michael against others in the world of rock.

Just based on the fact that Bryan May had a big smile on his face after George delivered that big note is pretty much all you need to know -- there can be no replacement for Freddie, but damn did George Michael kill it with his performance. Arguably the best performance out of that entire tribute concert.

It's great to see and hear how a singer - so different from Freddie - has managed to make one of the most powerful and legendary rock songs of our time his own. His voice always remains clean, crystal clear, velvety even when he hits those high notes... A voice that can always produce the most pleasing harmonies in the high register as well as the low one. And this is a peculiarity of George Michael. Such an extraordinarily talented man... What can I say? A tribute that truly honours a legend. ❤❤❤

Comparing the two doesn't mean having to pick who was better. It's looking and listening to each singer's different style and way of expressing the same song and checking for similarities. Freddie sang it raw with power and emotion, improvising even. George sang it more subtle, taking more time with each line, paying tribute to the song by being faithful to the original but still putting his own spin on it.

in my opinion, it's quite impossible to make a comparison between these two amazing performances. Freddy was singing a 2hrs+ concert and had to save his voice for the latter songs, George had just a few minutes on the stage and could deliver 100% of his power in the song. By the way, George's song is my favourite in Freddie's tribute.

Also George's was transposed down and he was younger than Freddie So it was much easier to sing the notes for George.

@Black Dog I'm not musically educated but to me George's performance is just so much better. To me he sounds like he has a full technical control of the song while at the same time pouring his emotions into it, meticulously interacting with and singing off the band and the choir and holding the whole audience on the palm of his hand. He is at he same time the central piece and just an equal part. Freddie has a tremendous voice but this performance sounds a bit rushed and forced compared to George's.

@@shapo001 He has control of the song because it’s made easier.

@@erikleite839 not to mention that Freddie sing it Rocking it, he had a rock voice he changes a lot up and down fast and slow and super fast .. you can't hear that in GM version. in GM version is a regular way of singing a song

Freddy is Freddy and of course he gets top vote. BUT George Michael sang it with more than heart and made Freddy darn proud for sure. Brian's smile says it all: George nailed it. No one else could stand next to Freddy but George in my opinion. Can you imagine them singing together? Epic!

You can;t really compare the two artists. They were both ultra talents with different ways of presenting a song.

I think you can't compare the two. George did his in tribute, and I can imagine that Freddie would've absolutely loved it. You can tell in that original video that this was his element.

Mercury is definetely a genious, but George Michael sang this song better, cause he did it as cool as human being can. Every note in this performance is just Perfect, imho. I've listened to this song dozens of times, I remember all of them. RIP George and Freddie!

George did really good but he could never be Freddie. This was just aoutine song for Freddie. Freddie's stage presentation and vocals can only be imitated but never surpassed

Both are awesome! What a great tribute George Michael did. Look at the smile on Brian's face near the end. He definitely approved. George Michael was best at the show and best cover of Freddie's song.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that George was the best at the show. Elton John did amazing at the tribute concert singing "The Show Must Go On" it is a hard song to sing and he did so good.

I remember watching Freddie's tribute concert live on TV back in 1992 and it was absolutely amazing with all the different talent singing Queen songs! But I have to admit that George Michael blew everyone away with his live performance of Somebody to Love. In an interview George said he was deeply inspired and going through many emotions at that time since his boyfriend (who was in the audience) was dying of AIDS too.

G.M. has a voice so beautiful, and he can nail other genres as well. Watching this vid I see a master entertainer. He got the audience totally engaged, also the band appears to step up their game too. This performance is exceptional, and I am grateful to watch it.
