Freddie's greatest one-liner (to me!) was from when he was asked once by a woman (who didn't know who he was!) what instrument did he play in the band...and Freddie responded with 'The Audience!'

Lovely Reaction as always. The song is really about breaking free from anything you are struggling with, not just stereotypes or marrige, it can be anything. Fun fact, the song and the lyrics where made by John Deacon, the bass player, who was a happy married man and had two sons at the moment; but everyone always think this is a song by Freddie about is sexuality. Please do more Queen, do the least know song Innuendo, The invisible man, The miracle or A kind of magic.

The song seems to be about a bad relationship that you want to leave, then transitions into "I've fallen in love... this time I know it's for real." Great respect for Deacon saying no ( aside from some recording work to finish an album ) to continuing after Freddie passed. Adam Lambert is a decent singer but it just isn't the same.

A song takes on a life of its own once realeased and becomes popular. They weave themselves into your life and 'speak' to you in so many different ways if you let them. Queen was the sound of my childhood as well as my retirement. The amazing voice of Freddie Mercury lives on despite his death at too young an age. His were one of the voices that changed public attitudes over time. The UK is still not completely LGBT+ friendly but is much more accepting and now I hear fellow retirees admitting how wrong there former views were! Thanks for the reaction.

@@theladystyle1 It gets confused with a different video that did get banned ( a video made for "Body Language" ). But homophobia was rampant then in the U.S., and some people strongly disliked the video ( a stupid time ). That show was unknown in U.S. so the satire aspect was lost.

It’s a synthesiser that makes the sound. There was a documentary done where the man who played it was saying that he was the only non member of the band on the album. In the documentary about the Tribute Concert Robert Plant says that a lot of the keys were changed in the songs as the other artists singing them couldn’t reach the same range as Freddie.

Freddie Mercury is one who proves that charisma trumps looks, and talent trumps production. Towards the end he was thin, easily tired and wore pale, loose clothes to hide how ill he was, and still gave amazing performances, even though it took days to record a song as he was in almost constant pain.

Freddie Mercury was a showman and he often went without a shirt and in some live performances just sang in his boxer shorts 😂. His voice and performances were so mesmerizing that no one cared that he was half naked. If anything, that endeared him to audiences because it was so Freddie to do whatever he wanted and he honestly didn’t give a damn what anyone thought. Queen was the very definition of unique both in their music and in their videos too. Great reactions here!

Fantastic reaction, I really enjoy the way you try to analyse everything. This is a housewife who just wants to break free from everyday life, the dance sequences is like a dream. That is the video. The song was written by bass player John Deacon, he was really a family man, he has 6 children, Queen were touring a lot. John Deacon wanted to break away from touring life and spent more time with his family. The video is a spoof of a British soap drama called Coronation Street. Freddie Mercury was friends with some dancers from the Royal Ballet, so they were included, performing a piece called The Afternoon Of The Faun. The scene with the lights on everyone's heads was to show support for a miners strike that was happening at that moment. This video caused some problems for Queen in the USA, with MTV at the time. The musical part you are referring to was played by a synthesizer, the 80's were a time of synths. Before the 80's the technology of the synths that were available wasn't that good, they were sometimes big machines or it was more difficult to use effectively. This changed in the 80's it became much easier to use synths, and they could replicate other instruments. People loved the new electronic synth sound in the 80's, interestingly this same 80's synth sound has actually been quite popular on the charts now as well, a lot of artists today uses synth samples from the 80's, The Weekend is a good example. The synth section was actually played like a guitar solo, so you could make some of those same sounds on the guitar. In live settings, guitarist Brian May just played that section on his guitar. The 70's and 80's had amazing singers and all of them had their own unique sound. When you use autotune and everyone is taught the same vocal techniques, people really start to sound very similar. Radio and record labels wants people to sound similar, they work towards a formula. Autotune removes some of the unique features of the voice, it also removes emotion for the voice. A voice is like a musical instrument to a degree, but unlike most of the usual or popular instruments a voice can use smaller notes, such as quarter tones, when you use autotune or Melodyne you remove that smaller details or notes from the voice. They did not always use the correct vocal technique in the 70's, 80's and 90's, but everyone used their own unique vocal interpretations, which adds a lot if you combine it to song writing as well. There are still great singers and artists but you will not find them in the top 40 of any popularity list. In earlier decades the charts did sometimes have amazing singers and artists that you could find on the top 40 list. You should check out some live Queen material, Freddie Mercury was an amazing live singer and performer. Check out Somebody To Love - Queen live at Montreal 1981.

Too many reactors get hung up on the video. Most don't realise or know that the video is, was and always intended to be a joke and has nothing to do with the meaning of "I Want to Break Free". The writer of the song, John Deacon, has actually said that the song was about his wanting to break free from the grind of touring and spend more time with his family.

@@imweakfordeaky I am perfectly aware that this nor many of their songs are about Freddie being "gay", but I view it as a starting place for a lot of these songs that are about breaking stereotypes... There are quite a few of them. They did do their music by community and everyone wrote and came up with ideas and they went with the music and what was their best new ideas. Them putting on drag here is just brilliant... Love it. They were a head of the game on many things and had Freddie's unique voice to carry the message. Also Brian May on the guitar is and was quite a revelation. He is just one man pulling that off. It is a lot of the time a wonder that they pulled off their songs with just 4 guys. The songs sound so much bigger than that, but it is just 4 guys... It is a wonder how they pulled it all off. The fact that they all saw the struggles Freddie went through is visible in their music and in the writing. The band desperately needed and rooted for Freddie to find his place and breakthrough the stigmas of being a gay man. And I believe he was a large part of today's wide acceptance of none straight people, it is just sad he did not live to see this future...

More nonsense from people that know nothing about Queen and assume every song is about (1) about an autobiographical event in the songwriters life; and / or (2) Freddie's sexuality. What's Bohemian Rhapsody about? Freddie gay! What's Somebody to Love about? Freddie gay! I Want to Break Free? Freddie gay of course! JK Rowling was able to write about wizards without actually having been one herself. The fact is that most Queen songs are not about a specific autobiographical event or sentiment that the songwriter experienced, though of course they draw upon their life experiences in composing the song. Freddie was very adamant that he did not intend his ongs to have one specific meaning, and where his songs are more rooted in specific events or emotional states, they are written in a different style

Some clarifications: 1. The song it's about Freddie Mercury declaring to the world that he was gay and that he have a new boyfriend/husband, and that Queen are going to take on the world. Yes it's about get rid of stereotypes. The good thing about it it was that his boyfriend stay with him from 1985 until his death in 1991. 2. The sound in the middle part is a keyboard, I think a Moog or a Prophet. Both Freddie and Brian May played piano and keyboards on Queen albums. 3. Freddie used to play live shirtless. In the 70's the whole band use to used costumes and make up live, so they decided in the 80's to be more simplistic live on stage. 4. In the 70's Queen were more Hard Rock, a little bit Progressive, then in the 80's they become more softer and electronic in some cases, very influenced by musical styles like New Wave, Synth Pop and Pop Rock.

That instrument a synthesizer if you saw it in stage it would looke a keyboard. As far as the song Freddie was gay but never came out until a couple of weeks before he tragically died od aids. He had a long time girl friend who was with him till he died and a male partner. But in the eighties Freddy was a bit of a naughty boy in Hamburg and caught aids which finally killed him . I was fortunate to see Queen alone with many of the seventies and eighties bands you have on your channel and yes even Led Zep. . I do believe the music from that time was amazing . I cant explain the rush you had during and after every concert a feeling you just cant explain. . I must admit seeing those old videos brings back memories

You are very cute when you talk about (at like about 10:00) not quite understanding something about the song. That is part of the appeal of these classics! You get hooked by a chorus or a guitar solo or the drummer or the keyboardist. Then, almost every time you hear it, you "discover" something new. And, you can listen to it with a friend and hear their different perspective about what they like about the song. So don't think it is a negative thing when one of these classics causes you some confusion or wanting to think about it some more.

As showman , Freddy has the skill to improvise and get the audience in his pocket and yes he did not bother for shirt in videos or live no one would complain that's was his style the sond you mention can be done by guitar or keyboard with distortion effects .

Freddie was running his own vintage fashion market stall when he met and joined Brian and the others, he was a true entrepreneur and pioneer in all he done, trying out and introducing new things being music gender and all that he touched, a true professional icon and front man a one off who i don't think will ever be bettered be bettered his true love i believe was opera and fulfilled his need for that in his collaboration with the Spanish opera singer Montserrat cabelle when the world famous anthem Barcelona was sung between them for the Barcelona Olympic games, view that i promise you it will make you hairs stand out

Solo is a Mini Moog Synthesizer played by Fred Mandel. The pitch wheel was used to imitate the string bending of a guitar. It would be possible to get similar sounds at the time with a guitar but apparently the bass player who wrote the song did not want any guitars on the song he wrote .

Hello Miss just came across your channel and this reaction to one of my favourite Queen videos. Am 43 now but when I was a kid and growing up didn't know for a long time the schoolgirl was Roger Taylor or as someone called him online Rogerina. I actually thought that was actually a young woman in the video. Then I found out it was Roger and have to admit after I found out and even now still think Roger looked quite sexy.

4:35 It was normal for Freddie to do whatever Freddie wanted to do. Dressed, half naked, strutting the stage in leather knickers. Whatever. 6:46 No it's a synth (synthesizer...keyboard), sounds like a Moog or something similar. After searching... Mini Moog played by guest musician Fred Mandel

The video was a parody of the characters of the british TV soap opera "Coronation Street" that's why the were dressed in that way, many didn't get this connection and in America the video was banned on MTV at the time of release. As another Queen song I may suggest you "A Kind of Magic".

TRY HIS VOCAL QUALITY ON SAY ‘BARCELONA’ I honestly believe he’d have done loads more operatic stuff with other top opera stars (like Monserrat Caballe/Pavarotti) IF he’d lived longer…..BUT, as Freddie sung, “WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER” !

Hello, this is one of my favorite Queen songs, especially with the video. I think it's brilliant, the creativity, a bit of mischievousness and irony, although the song probably also refers to a second variant of "being free" (the sexual liberation, I would assume). 7:20 I would say it would have to be a synthesizer. Regarding the shirt (or without sirt) question, Freddy was a showman on stage, an entertainer and was very extroverted there, so he liked to show himself there, which doesn't mean that it always had to be bare-chested. For me, Freddy is one of the greatest not only because of his distinctive and unique voice, but also because of his creativity with the music and everything around it.

There are many Queen, songs that people never realize are Queen songs. React to We Will Rock You, We are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust, I Want it All, just for a few of them. You'll be amazed how many you've heard. Queen rules!!

The idea of the video belonged to Roger Taylor (drummer): he suggested in the clip to parody "Corrie" - an unprecedented long "soap" series "Coronation Street". The series was launched in December 1960 and may even still be running. Naturally, several generations of both actors and characters have changed during this time. The series told the stories of the families of the workers of the weaving factory of the town of Weatherfield. What is remarkable in the ratio of the clip and the series is that the men of Weatherfield are firmly under the heels of their wives. The musicians chose their own image - and it turned out to be a great parody of the local ladies. Interestingly, the series still could not restrain itself and, in turn, parodied "Queen". However, he did it late. Unforgivably late - in 2012.

BISSCUTE, I'M ADORING YOUR QUEEN/FREDDIE MERCURY REACTIONS! SUGGESTIONS: QUEEN'S FULL LIVE-AID SET kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX6ci3qVgtl5r80 (NOTE: This link is to an EXTENDED/FULL VERSION, which INCLUDES THE ENCORE done by Freddie/Brian May for the event's evening closing.) "THE GREAT PRETENDER" (This is from Freddie's solo album. In the MV, he also dresses up as a woman and re-creates scenes from many earlier Queen MVs.) "COOL CAT" This is audio only; Freddie sings the whole song in FALSETTO; a TOTALLY DIFFERENT sounding voice.) "BARCELONA" (The title track from Freddie's album of OPERA W soprano MONTSERRAT CABALLE.)

Hello Bisscute, what a Joy watsvhing your reactions. I have so much fun. To Freddy Mercury: His big theme in those years was the homosexuality and the reactions in society. He was a Rebell against homophobia and society began to accept that kind of human being. That was in the 1970s,1980s and 1990s.

I’m no expert and though I know this song well, this is my first time watching this video. But don’t you think the house stuff is mundane life, “I want to break free from this” Then the other scenes are exciting life. At end of video he breezes back through the room and heads upstairs, “Screw you, guys…”
