She was the longest reigning monarch in Danish history when she decided to -completely out of character and tradition - to abdicate and step down in favour of her oldest son Crown Prince Frederik. The people were at first shocked when she announced it, but everyone approves. She is in her 80s and it was generally felt that of course she should have the opportunity to spend her remaining years in peace and comfort without the burden of being the head of state. King Frederik and his wife Queen Mary have now taken over and they are doing a great job and are very popular. They also have four beautiful kids. The Crown Prince now is 19 year old Christian. Queen Margrethe speaks five languages: Danish, Swedish, English, French, German and Faroese. Prince Henrik was a French count. He spoke at least five languages French, Danish, English, Chinese and Vietnamese. Their sons each speak at least four languages. Both sons are fully bilingual Danish-French, English and German.

Being Irish and living in the U.K. myself, I like the former Danish Queen and the Danish Royal family and I’m fascinated by the Danish Royal Court - I know that Edward VIIII had been married to Queen Alexandra of Denmark, a Marraige arranged by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert - I know also that Queen Mary is Australian ❤❤❤❤

She’s so statuesque and stylish. Beautifully spoken. She’s a true artist. But the editing of Indian music over the explanation of Henrik’s illness was tacky. Her abdication is so gently done and her son and Mary are doing so beautifully.

Queen Margrethe was named after her maternal grandmother, princess Margaret of Connaught. She married the swedish heir to the throne and became crown princess Margareta of Sweden. She died tragically in 1920, aged 38 while being pregnant with her sixth child. Margrethe is simply the danish version of Margaret/Margareta.

In Europe: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lichtenstein, Monaco, Luxembourg and Spain all have constitutional monarchies. There are also monarchies in the far East such as Japan and in Africa.

The government decided to make it equal.. and by law they said that the first born son should be king, and didn't they get a son, The first born girl, will be Queen.. They change the law one more time, and now the first born will be the King or Queen..
