Queen Mary 2 Arrives in San Francisco

I said "wow". Because we were standing on the eastern side of the roadway we couldn't see the ship as it approached very well. When it did pass, the full length and size became apparent and we were all awestruck.
BTW, I remember when the QM1 came into Long Beach (my hometown) for the last time in 1967 to be moored where she stands today.

I just happened to be in S.F. on business that weekend and brought my girlfriend along and we had the best surprise when we were told the QM2 would be passing through the Bay. It was an awesome sight. Once it docked we were able to walk up to it and it was a massive sight. Great memory.

She is magnificent. Watching this made me realise just how big she is! The corridors were extremely long but I had no idea just how long! Sprinting down them at about 4am will always be a great memory!

I visited the old Queen Mary in North Beach a few months ago. What an experience! Amazing that that was how people crossed the Atlantic in those days. QM2 is a worthy successor.

i was working for kodak in san fran on van ness ave, when this pulled into the bay,it was the 1st time it came to sf. it was a sight to see-such a beautiful ship,and huge-for it's day i guess i will always remember it,with the fireboat shooting water up in the air, it was a treat!

I'm glad the Queen Mary 2 exists. It's more of a true ocean liner than those silly floating boxes we call cruise ships. They even call their passengers "guests" for Pete's sake!

I worked on that ship until april :) That rear bit near the 2 raised black points is deck 13, thats where all the crew party, you can see its really busy.

Queen Mary 2 is also the second fastest ocean liner in service (after QE2). Her top speed is around 30 knots or about 50% faster than the average cruise ship. She is owned by Carnival Corp. USA and operated by Cunard Line UK.

Brochure rates for the World cruise on QM2 range from $19,000 for an inside 'Britannia grade' cabin to nearly $70,000 per person for a Queens Grill suite. There are three basic catagories of cabins starting w/the Britannia grade, then Princess Grill mini suites and finally Queens Grill suites. The large 'Duplex apartment' suites (the two-story suites overlooking the swimming pools) are priced even higher.

Queen Mary 2 was doing a round-the-World cruise. This was the 1st time she passed under the Golden Gate Bridge and she received a great welcome. QM2 spends 1/2 the year on the North Atlantic run between the UK and USA and the other time on cruises.

Queen Mary 2 is still the largest (and by far the fastest) luxury ocean liner in service at 151,000 tons. The new Oasis of the Seas is a mass market cruise ship that will be approx 220,000 tons when completed.

I wish I could see QM2 at an aerial view. I got to see her on a boat during the Royal Rendezvous in Long Beach w the original QM in 2006, but what a view! I wanna sail on her so much! - BTW, QM came to Long Beach in 1967, not 1969, just sayin'. Great vid, Thanks for Posting :)

It can get even more confusing as Queen Mary 2 is a 'dual purpose' ship like her former fleetmate QE2. On the Transatlantic run, QM2 operates a line service (luxury passenger ship) and when on cruises she is a 'cruise' ship. She is one of the few class divided ships w/three seperate restaurants for each grade of cabin accomodations. A bit like a 3-class liner of the past but the lowest grades are as good as premium cabins on most cruise ships.

@sideslide23 QM2 recently was docked near the Allure or Oasis of the Seas in Ft Lauderdale. From the side they look about the same size BUT the RCI ship is much wider and not as good looking. Even though there are a few larger ships QM2 has so much more presence. The sleeker lines and color scheme makes QM2 look more impressive.

Queen Mary 2 is lost the title of World's largest passenger ship to the RCI ships but is still the longest and by far the fastest. QM2 is also a premium cruise ship while the RCI ships are lower fare mass-market ships. The new RCI Oasis of the Seas will be by far the largest when she enters service next year.

QM2 was designed by a Brit Stephan Payne who works for parent company Carnival Corp USA. The ship was built in France, is registerred in the UK, Managed by Cunard/Princess and owned by Carnival Corporation of Miami.

J. Bruce Ismay was the Director of the White Star Line, and helped merge the company into the IMM. Yet, it was still J.P. Morgan and his financial company which handled and owned the line, along with others.

Cunard-White Star's RMS Queen Mary of 1936 was named after Queen Mary-wife of King George VI. The Queen christended her namesake at the John Brown shipyard in Scotland in 1934. The Queen Mary 2 or QM2 is named after that ship.

QM2 may be smaller than the Oasis and Allure of the Seas but they are geared to completely different markets. QM2 is a high-speed premium luxury liner while Oasis/Allure are mass-market cruise ships that cruise (slowly) in the Caribbean. QM2 can take on the nasty N Atlantic and still keep to a high-speed schedule. Most other ships can't do that today.
