Hubbard’s Journey

We’ve faced rough seas before, but nothing quite like what we encountered on this incredible voyage aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2. Setting sail from New York City on January 3, 2024, we embarked on what we hoped would be a smooth winter crossing of the North Atlantic, heading to Southampton, England. But instead, the ocean greeted us with three relentless days of pure chaos-snow, sleet, freezing rain, and one of the most violent storms we have ever faced. Over the course of 72 hours.
Day 1 - We departed from Brooklyn, New York, on a January evening. The Queen Mary 2, one of the most iconic ocean liners in history, began her transatlantic crossing.
Day 2: The Calm Before the Storm -Though the weather remained cold but clear for much of the day, the Captain’s evening report warned of deteriorating conditions ahead. The forecast showed that a developing storm system would meet us head-on within the next 24 hours. That evening, light snow began to fall, and the winds started to gust. The waves were now 10-15 feet high, signaling the onset of rougher seas.
Day 3: Beaufort Force 9 - We woke to the ship lurching underfoot, and looking outside, we saw blizzard-like conditions. The wind was howling at around 50 mph (80 km/h). The ship began to sway as the waves surged higher and higher. According to the ship’s weather report, we were experiencing a Beaufort Force 9 storm, with winds between 47-54 knots (about 54-63 mph) and waves reaching 23-32 feet. The conditions rapidly worsened throughout the day. Inside, some of the passengers began to sense the growing danger. Staff and crew remained professional and calm, but there was no ignoring the violent storm that had engulfed us.
Day 4: Beaufort Force 10 - Storm Intensifies - Overnight, the storm intensified, and we were officially in a Beaufort Force 10 storm, also known as a violent storm. Winds now reached 63-70 mph (101-113 km/h), and waves towered at 32-41 feet. The ship creaked under the immense pressure of the sea as it was pounded by one wave after another. The Captain’s report described the worst of it: we were caught in the center of a fast-moving low-pressure system, causing these extreme conditions. Passengers were advised to be careful and use handrails as the ship pitched and rolled in the violent seas. The stabilizers, designed to reduce the ship's rolling motion, were pushed to their absolute limits. Every few minutes, the Queen Mary 2 would rise high on a wave, only to drop into a deep trough, sending some passengers stomachs into freefall. You could hear the waves crashing into the ship.
Day 5: Beaufort Force 11 - The Worst of the Storm - We were in the grip of a Beaufort Force 11 storm, the second-highest rating on the scale. This storm brought winds exceeding 70 mph (113 km/h), with waves between 37-52 feet. At this point, the storm had reached its peak intensity. It felt as though the entire ocean was working against us. We could feel every wave, every gust of wind, every crash of water against the ship’s hull. Temperatures dropped to a frigid 19°F (-7°C). The ship’s crew worked tirelessly to clear the decks, while the ship battled through massive waves, she handled it quite nicely. All passengers were advised to stay indoors. That evening, the Captain informed us that the storm was expected to continue for several more hours, but that the worst was behind us. As the night went on, the winds slowly began to ease, but the ship was still caught in violent seas.
Day 6: The Storm Breaks - The winds decreased to a much more manageable 40 mph, and the waves, though still rough, were no longer the towering monsters of the previous days. The temperature warmed slightly to 32°F (0°C), and the snow gave way to light rain. For some passengers there was a sense of relief mixed with disbelief at what we had all just experienced. We had survived one of the most intense storms of the year to hit the Queen Mary 2, and it had taken every ounce of engineering and skill to get us through it. She is an amazing ship!
Days 7-8: Approaching Southampton
We will never forget our time aboard the Queen Mary 2, battling the fury of the North Atlantic.
Please consider watching our entire Cunard Playlist to see more of this magnificient oceanliner as well as some of the adventures we had at each of the ports of call. This journey started in NY and cruised to Southampton, England - Tenerife, Spain - Walvis Bay, Namibia - Port Elizabeth, Capetown & Durban, South Africa - Reunion Island - Mauritius Island and then finally Perth, Australia. We stayed in an inside cabin (check out our cabin tour & review video) for 45 days. With many interesting changes in weather, sickness, safety protocols, breaking-news LIVE updates, as well as amazing ports of call with two overnight stops..
And as always... Thanks for coming along on our journey!

I was 3 years old when my family crossed the North Atlantic in August from England to Canada. I will never forget even as a little one. Hit the tail end of a hurricane on a much smaller ship. Even the purcer and cabin crew were ill. My mother and sister were bedridden. I remember the stairs going up and then going down. My older brother and I wandered the ship freely. I also remember sitting in the children’s dining room watching a pitcher of water sliding all the way down this long table and then it slid all the way back. Crazy that I remember some of it so well even being so young. Later on I became a sailor.

No Suprises here! Traveling on Cunard in January embarking in NYC and winter storms are "BAU". Business As Usual. My first experience was in January '89 and the QE2 was on saiing on 45 degree angle. I loved the experience and I do not get motion / sea sickness I ever monitor the weather. I grew up with senior citizen and they were obsessed / snow birds thus I refuse to track it now that I am senior. I'm glad you all were prepared for the weather. I am on week from 10-days in Alaska and I did not need the over coats and rain protective jackets you adorned. Thanks for the shaing your experience. Besides the weather, what were the most interesting and fun events on the ship. This looks like groundhogs day. BTW, Yes, I was able to find and Homer.

QM2 is unique and takes everything in her stride, it might be worth sitting down and watching some of the videos about its development and architecture too. Yes there are cruise ships across the globe but they don’t have the ability to cope with such demanding environments as the Atlantic sea. One special feature is the lifeboats being high up because of the waves that can easily be experienced. There’s nothing ordinary about QM2 and the staff are exceptional too.

@@HubbardsJourney could you describe what a 90 foot wave is. Is it from the bottom of the trough to the top of peak .. or the average (root mean square RMS value). I was on board SS Australis (ex SS America) in 1973 after leaving Miami and we passed the remnant hurricane effects. The "waves" crashed over the bridge, but they weren't 90 foot waves. Curious since she was an unstabilized vessel and was taking the sea at a diagonal into the wind, ... so she was rolling and rocking. Definitely climbed the wave and buried the bow. Open decks were closed, but she was a good ship and could handle the Atlantic. It sounds a bit like your ship may have encountered what we call a rogue wave where there is a superposition of waves which added to form a large encounter. Not uncommon.

Don't know, why so many hate cruise ships. It would be same to hate sports cars, because they are not good in snow storm. Both are completely different types, you can not compare 1:1 them. Both are good in their designed category. I personally never liked ocean liners, as they all looked like hideous cake boxes, except Normandie. She was beauty. This QM2 looks also nice for liner. And I like cruise ships, I think Oasis class is best looking passenger ship of all. But this trip, it seems sailing very slow and waves not so high. Looks more like "normal" storm to me, but this could be fake illusion by camera.

Thank you for your comment. We would agree, we only had this captain for the eight days of the crossing on the QM2. Once we got to Southampton and she started on her World Journey, we got a different Captain. He was a delight! Very enthusiastic, easy to understand, and always gave us a little bit of maritime trivia each day. We cruised on the QM2 all the way to Fremantle Australia, 45 days that we enjoyed immensely. We have continued exploring since then. Both on land and at sea. Hit the subscribe button and come along on our journey around the world!

I'm ex Royal Navy and that nothing. You didn't but a 90' waves. No chance. It's a bit roughers but nothing really. And your on a luxury liner with big stabilizers, try being on a top heavy warship with rolling from port to starboard and back about 45/50 degrees. And you don't eat because our chefs just made lot mess ( stew) and sandwiches. Your better on the upper deck so you can see the pitch and roll/ horizon as it stops you being as seasick. We used to play on it and get a chit from the doc to bed down for 24 hours.zzzznnnnnn.😅
