I learned painting for years with very little improvement, then it changed when I started focusing on how I was learning, what I was concentrating on and where and who I was getting my information.

Yeah, every time i get in this tutorials videos on youtube, i usually don't feel like im learning something, it is difficult to find "good teachers" when you try to learn in the first time, many people end up failing to transmit knowledge tho.
@sizlax
@sizlax 3 жыл бұрын
@@cofeus7042 Could be due to the horribly inefficient way in which we're 'taught' in schools these days. We're taught memory through repetition, listen, copy, follow instructions .etc. Creative thought, and individualism are becoming things of the past. The methods are so often like giving a man a fish, rather than teaching him how to fish. This is why most people forget most of what they've learned, the moment they're not going to school anymore.

Realized too late that I actually had bad teachers in school. I mean, I graduated with a fear of ever making art again because of all the hurtful feedback I recieved... But its been years now, I wanna try again. And this time imma make sure these teachers know what they are doing, have a good portfolio and if there is no helpful feedback, for sure is a red flag.

The very first month when I was painting digitally, I eyedropped a lot. And no, I wasn't doing it to investigate. I just wanted that colour. But by the end of that month, I had developed an eye of it. I could tell exactly which colour was which, even though it didn't look like it. Ever since that first month, I've never had to eyedrop again. Even while looking at real life subjects, or when i do traditional painting, my overall colour-spotting has just gotten way better and way more accurate. Eyedropping isn't all that bad.

Agreed!! If it helps you to learn and to see colors differently or in a way you hadn't before, then it's definitely not all bad! :) ~S

Copying is a good start but without understanding why the way it is. Your painting will become boring without knowing why! Look at some of the Master work like John Sergeant’s brush strokes, he really knows why the strokes are there because he knows color theory! Learn the techniques side then it is easy to draw and paint! I started tradition human head sculpture, understand the anatomy, when I draw I knew what is under the skin. Without that knowledge I’m just copying without knowing why? Be a software user or be an artist that are the differences!
@bourbongod7889

I eyedrop too. I did it and im still doing it now, several years later. Just as you said "i learned about the colours they chose and the reason they chose that", and that gave me an arsenal. I don't do a lot of 30-min-speedpaintings, but when i do i instantly know the colours i want if it's a night setting, a bright day setting, etc. This art thing is just a cycle of trying until you like it, and inspiring other people to try it your way. The thing is, as you said, you must be careful not to get caught in the web of repeating the same thing. Go do other art styles. Use variation. Learn from more. In the end you gotta find your own style.
@BobbyChiu
@BobbyChiu 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly this!! Learn in any way that works well for you, and if that means using the eyedropper, then go for it! The important thing is that you're learning during the process and trying things you might not have thought to try otherwise. Eventually, after trying out different techniques and methods of painting, your own unique style will emerge! :) ~S

You have no idea how much I needed to hear this. I painted one of my best paintings I’d ever done last year - it was also the first time I used the dropper. I used it to study the colour exactly as you said. Everyone complimented this painting, more than any other painting I’d ever done. And I was embarrassed. I felt like a fraud. This is the one they like? The one I use the eye dropper on?! I didn’t even do it, I felt like. That was the last time I ever painted. Until I just saw this video. You’ve invalidated how horrible I felt the last year and I’m so insanely motivated and giddy now. Thank you thank you thank you!!!! 🙏

Your art journey is an exact copy of mine. I impress everyone with how great of a copy machine I am all the time. Even as a kid, my mom use to tell me, "Ok, now do it without tracing." And I'd say I didn't and she'd look at me in disbelief. No matter how fun that will always be, I want to be able to pull something from my imagination and communicate it well. Oh, to be more than a copy machine! You understand where I've been, you are the art teacher I've been looking for!

Yes, knowing what the artist thinks is so incredibly helpful. That's the reason I really love istebraks totorials. Because she goes just so slowly and deliberately and explains absolutely every decision and reasoning. So you can draw along with her. May sound boring, but it's absolutely fascinating! For me she opened the door to learning from others and really kicked me off.

Holy fuck, what you told was exactly what I was doing. I observed how artists do in their art, I would go minutes or hours studying how they did things in their art. After like months, I noticed my self improving so much. I also observed life, like how light works usually, I study how it effects the color because of light.

Been meaning to watch this, glad I found it again. I eyedropper too, usually to figure out how local colors get effected by light. I have confused a great many of my artistic friends with my ability to go in and use muted yellows and reds in an evening setting and have it look green. :D And agree on the need for multiple, and most especially *good* teachers. I will happily watch painting videos of any artists who's work catches my eye, and it's actually been a huge payoff to do so. I've found I'm a sucker for adding a good deal of subsurface scattering when painting anything living, a nice bright red edge to the majority of shadows cast by the main light source. It might not be there in life when you look at it, but it adds to the feeling of something warm and living. I'm a bit of an advocate for painting more then just what you see, paint how it physically feels too.

The whole part of the copy machine really got me. About 75-80% of my drawings are based on some random piece I see on the Internet, and I never really liked that for some reason. I would often try to grab gesture, color, lighting, or shapes from such pieces. Then I would try to draw something from imagination and completely flounder. Now I am trying to draw even more with imagination and use a little bit more experimentation without looking up what other artists do: Unless I am stuck or comparing something I drew to see what another artist does differently. Thanks for the video!

I related with the "I like boring things" I tend to hyper focus on things in the way of dissecting it mentally. I could do things for a long period of time while I noticed people around me struggled with these things. In a way I would watch things as to figure out how they worked and moved like eyelashes... hands... lighting. The functionality of things intrigued me. I didn't notice I would do it until someone pointed it out because they caught me in a weird daze. It really helped me learn how to do things on my own or draw a lot of things... not all art related just in general. People often comment on my "gestures" they notice "expression" , "emotion" in my art... In a positive way and I think It's because I pick up on those things in people. The emotions behind those lines.

I got pretty good pretty fast as well but I kept noticing my painting was off here and there. Now that I have been looking at many painters vs their photo reference. I notice that they too don't have the painting look exact. I remember finishing a painting and trying to fix what was wrong with it... It looked so good. I could not find out what the problem was. She just seemed to smile more vibrantly in my painting. The photo reference was just a simple smile. Then I realized what the problem was. I painted in the eyes a bit lower than what they were suppose to be. So it looked like she had an engaging smile. Since it looked like her eyebrows were raised up higher. I already put a good amount of time so I said "Fk it it's good enough" I'd say I represented to 85-88%. Then moved on to the next photo. Painting an old person. That one took me a while but I had to turn off trying to get every wrinkle on their face. It was coming out nicely but this time I decided to put the eyes in last. I am finding it VERY difficult. It was a bad idea lol. So it sits at like 75-80% represented..If I can put in the eyes right it would shoot up to the other painting. Now I look at your photo reference and painting.. It came out pretty good...over the 90% for sure represented...In the photo reference her face is thinner, she has a slight cleft in her chin and she's slightly not looking at us and her eye bulges out a bit more. However as you said in the video, we are not suppose to 100% copy the photo/life...we are suppose to REPRESENT it... It helps me move on from the flaws I made in the painting and go on to the next thing. Young Woman, Old Man, Up next A family of people at various ages. I think my problems will slowly dissipate over time as I become more seasoned. I was afraid to paint over. Once I tossed that out the window for the first painting I learned FAST. The second one helped me learn what details to put and what to leave out. This third one will be a lesson from the previous 2. Then I'll probably start doing animals although there is a lot of leeway because we as humans can recognize faces but put some buffer room for our animals. Then landscape Then Animals in landscape Then human and animals in landscapes Then Houses Then multiple houses Then houses in landscapes...etc etc etc... Then, locations in the city with humans, cars, animals, etc, buildings, cityscapes you get where I am going here? lol

Great lessons, man ! I particularly enjoyed the bit about the bad teachers. It's true that a half-assed knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge at all. The queen's Gambit was definitely one of the most cinematic treasure of the year. And Anya Taylor Joy is most definitely a real joy to look at (and draw, as I can see here). I'm an animation artist, so my own style of drawing is much more simplistic (do the lines, slap the flat colors, draw one layer of flat shadows, one of flat highlights, and that's it, on to the next drawing ... of the remaining 999), so I never have the patience to sculpt the light, shadows and colors like you're doing here, and so it's always quite a fascinating spectacle to see it happening in front of my eyes. That's a fantastic portrait of a fantastic character. I myself wanna make a fan art of her soon. Oh, and get my old checkboard back and play some chess again.

The big blobs at the beginning and their "WHY" have always been the big mystery to me. Still is. What is the thinking in the initial stages?
@reaganmadole887
@reaganmadole887 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a question I've been asking myself too! All the professionals I've been watching always do something like it. I like to think about it as if its the forming of loose shapes and structures, like something you'd see if your eyes where blurry or squinted. I watched this fantasy landscape artist not to long ago (heres the link if your interested!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2mygaCGbJp7gLc) and the way they lay out those initial shapes are very interesting and quite insightful! :)
@kjh-vq5rh
@kjh-vq5rh 3 жыл бұрын
I think its to form the general shape. Sinix Design talked about it in one of his videos where you start with a big brush first before moving on to smaller and smaller brushes for the final details as you draw.
@greggreen6532
@greggreen6532 3 жыл бұрын
@@kjh-vq5rh Of course that is an integral part of it but what I was referring to was more a question of color and value. If form is built up in a general area, one shape of a general local color, where do you start? Do you initially make that shape the Darkest value and come up in 3 dimension by adding lighter and lighter more saturated color or do you start in a middle value so you can do both UP and DOWN (deep and high dimensionally) to get the required result. In a general color lay in of ALL the general shapes of different local colors do you initially paint ALL of them in their darkest or mid value range and then check that they integrate on the chosen (dark or middle) range of each color. That is a tricky business as when looking DOWN into the color range of a real 3 dimensiona object you not only have to ignore a hell of a lot of information to get the answers but you then have to do a general scan to see if your decisions hold together as a coherent statement before you even start to make choices for the lightest areas THEN the "bling" or "earrings" of the flashy extreme highlights. The difficulty is that as you are looking at your subject, those highest highlights are very attraction getting to your eye and you have to somehow ignore them mentally to get past your own eyes' natural response to them. A light on a middle or dark value with make them both look darker. It can be a house of mirrors if you don't have a clear mental path worked out for yourself. I really hope Uncle Bob sees this comment and has some kind of mental discipline or outlook we might use to wander through the confusion of the initial step. Personally I think just "hoping it will all turn out well" without a plan is a very, very bad one and mostly ends in disaster. Marrying someone you had two dates with is a good analogy. it's whistling past the graveyard at midnight. 'Just do it" only works for shoes.

@@greggreen6532 I’m not exactly at this guy’s level yet, but I’m somewhat close. From what I gathered in your question, you’re wondering how they build up values and colors? In my case, the local color is always first. Using large, defined shapes to block in the local color of every object is what nearly every painter does. Then, we select the “mid-dark” color to begin shading; a color that is not the darkest shadow, but serves as a nice transitionary tone between the local color and darkest shadow. That color is often slightly more saturated than both the local color and shadow color to create the illusion of subsurface scattering. Then we begin to jump between building up the lights while deepening the darks. The same rule of shadow creation applies to the lights: start with a slightly more saturated color and build up to lighter, closer local value highlights towards the end. There isn’t a specific rule book of how you should build up value and color. However, the way I’ve memorized it helps me a lot. I just remember to constantly check myself for these steps: 1) Local Value 2) Mid-dark shadow 3) Ambient Occlusion 4) Mid-light highlight 5) Brighten highlights and deepen shadows Then I just repeat the fifth step until I’m satisfied with the colors and values. All that’s left afterwards is blending and rendering. :)

@@catcactus1234 really insightful!! I just got into painting (traditional and digital) and my first real traditional painting was so intimidating because I didn't know where to start and I was working with acrylic so I had to be fast. I usually look at digital timelapse paintings before every painting I do, just to gather information and inspiration about how an artist goes about it. I would say your process sums up what I've been noticing as a trend for digital painting.

5:50 Paint and draw from life, do master studies so you see what the artist has already eliminated and represent it in an effective way so when you copy it you start to absorb and see why they chose certain color, etc... and dots start to connect. Also find the start sketch, the step by step... So you understand why he does certain abstract brushtrokes at the begining of the painting, the fundations that hold up the rest of the building. So having artists exposed and see what they are thinking about that is THE WAY of lerning Learn same concepts from different artists that will give you tons more options

My biggest concern with digital painting is knowing what the heck brushes to use... I saw you had a few but how do you determine which ones are correct? In watercolor, for instance, I know what paper to use and what brushes I'll need to get the most out of my project but with digital, I never know how to determine what brushes would help me obtain the best results. Any advice in that regard? Also, thank you for the wonderful video. There was a lot of useful information that gives the viewer much to think about.
