Thank you for showing your whole process! I really learned a good chunk of info from your video. I really like the style you have developed, everything is very practical looking, I feel like I'm looking at an oil painting. I haven't considered using smaller brushes to break up the color and add texture to my renderings before I think I might give it a shot! Thanks again and keep crushing it Duuuuude 🤘😤

I've been approaching portraits from doing a B&W painting underneath; and then adding colour afterwards. This process looks more akin to the traditional process which I'm comfortable with, so I look forward to giving this a go. I also find colour selection in digital overwhelming, so I appreciate you breaking down the digital technical aspect of composing a pallet. I feel like ever since I started teaching myself digital art, that I've been buffeted around by different advices and unsure which voices to listen to. So this video is helpful for my clarity, and I appreciate seeing the under drawing. It's a kind of drawing I'm used to doing myself.

Years ago, a teacher said--for beginner's figure painting--use mixtures of ultramarine blue, burnt umber and titanium white. This is exactly what you just unpacked (since burnt umber is an orange-brown, ultramarine blue is a complement, and white tints both). Now I understand why. Thanks!

Normally how much should I change the value and saturation of the base color to find its shading and highlight colors?
@drawwithchris3 жыл бұрын
The values will depend on the lighting and local color of the skin. The key is to make sure there is enough difference in value so that the shadow is clearly separate from the lit side. In this example if the base color is 50% brightness, and the shadows are around 25%. Hope that helps.

I like the way you kind of draw a palette on your art board like that. I've got some fun palettes downloaded like Zorn and some other minimal palettes. I like the idea of taking the oil set and building 5 or 6 colors on the paper, then using them to sample, just like you would using oil as a medium. Or watercolor for that matter. Going to enjoy exploring this process. Using the color color to build areas of shadow, then building in the base color, then main areas of shadow, then blood darkened, then highlights.... Feels good.
