For years, we have been told that this song was written by Brian about a friend who was going through a difficult divorce. Very recently, Brian finally revealed Save Me is written about Freddie, who was going through a very difficult relationship at the time. He saw his friend being hurt and struggling in his love life, and wanted to tell that story through music. They rarely talked about what their songs meant explicitly with each other, but Brian said there was an air of implicit understanding between them, so I think Freddie knew :) “I wrote [‘Save Me’]-to cut a long story short-I wrote it about a friend, someone who was going through a bad time, and I imagined myself in their shoes, kind of telling the story. Someone whose relationship is totally fucked up and how sad that person was.”

I think Brian kind of sacrificed his "fame" as a guitarist for the greater good of the band. He said (not a quote) that he didn't want the guitar to stand out on it's own but to blend in with the whole song! And it always did! It was so much a part of Queen's sound, as much as the amazing harmonies and Freddie's vocals. A true blend!

I also read that the song by Brian was written about a friend who's relationship had ended (not his own).

I saw/ heard this version live when Queen released it as a single in 1979 the Crazy tour Alexander Palace London. My first concert experience. Ally Pally was a small intimate venue and oddly I got there early and actually walked upto the stage while the roadies were working on it. Lol. They ushered me and my friend MB out. Fred introduced Save me as the new single and he blew me away, it was so loud my ears had tinnitus for 3 days afterwards, such an amazing rendition so much so that 40 years later I smile when I hear the song. I was with my friend MB who I am told has passed away we lost touch the last 40 years ,I went to Uni in London, he stayed in Notts, but that concert that song still reverberates in my soul. Both Fred and MB have gone but my memories remain and I thank them both for a life long experience. Mercury was something quite unique.
