It's amazing that so much film footage exists of Queen Victoria's funeral procession exists, given that this was way back in 1901, and motion picture technology was still in its infancy at this point. Having watched the funeral procession for Queen Elizabeth just a few days ago, it's really interesting to notice how little has actually changed in regards to the pageantry, military outfits and funeral processions for deceased royals. I bet that this film footage would look even more similar to the modern era if someone took the time to colorize it and slow it down to normal speed. Just like with Elizabeth's passing, Victoria's death truly signaled the end of an era in Britain, and I'm sure back then, people also keenly felt the loss of a beloved, long-reigning monarch. Two remarkable female rulers, two centuries apart, who had both definitely made their mark on the world scene. RIP to Victoria and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth.

Also I believe Victoria's funeral was the first time the gun carriage and coffin were pulled by naval cadets. This was unplanned as apparently the horses bolted somewhere near Windsor and some naval cadets who were lining the parade route were called in to pull the gun carriage the rest of the way. Which is why they are rather haphazard and not as regimented as at Queen Elizabeth's funeral. After Victoria's funeral all monarchs coffins have been pulled by the naval cadets.

It was if Queen Victoria's death in January marked a change in attitude of Kaiser Wilhem William(1859-1941)who was the grandchild of the deceased Queen.The Kaiser had this enormous respect for Queen Victoria and then after her death the Kaiser adopted a hostile attitude towards Britain especially Queen Victoria's eldest son King Edward VII and thereafter King George V. It was the Kaiser's aggressive foreign policy and his hostility towards Britain that was one of the factors that led to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. The Kaiser was at odds with Britain his ambitious naval expension and had once remarked,"Germany cannot be a super power unless the trident is in our hands."

It's surprising how disorganized everything is, compared to the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth. The British royals realize that in the age of TV and internet, when billions of people are watching and the cameras capture everything, there should not be a single wrong move. The level of perfection they've achieved is astonishing. Elizabeth's funeral was the greatest show on earth.
@camillep93462 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it was as disorganised as these close clips may ‘indicate’. In fact, I think of it as merely representing the way things ‘were’ then - not forgetting the scapes and lack of technology etc. etc. Wonderfully ‘authentic’ - also, that old film looks more static than real life ☺️

Keep in mind, too, that the old silent films tended to make footage jumpier and more distorted than today's modern films, and they also made everyone appear to be moving faster. The funeral procession of Queen Victoria's time was also probably very dignified and precise; it's just harder to tell with this old footage!

I was looking at the horsemen and those marching. It looked as if many of the men were heavier than those we saw in Queen Elizabeth's funeral. It was a bitterly cold day in 1901, reportedly, so perhaps everyone was wearing layers of clothing. I did notice one horse acting up. His rider was very portly! I wonder what music was playing. It must have been difficult back then for many people to have traveled from afar to pay respects. Amazing that in many aspects the funerals were similar except I felt that Queen Elizabeth's was a bit more precise. The men marched in sync. Perhaps these had practiced more. Communication today is so much better. It was a blend of the traditional with a bit more modern. Both visually stunning.

The gun carriage and sailors pulling it was accidental. Her coffin arrived on a carriage. The horses had got stressed waiting in the freezing cold during the service and bolted, breaking the traces (edited out of newsreels) the sailors had been ranged up and down the streets holding these ropes to keep the crowd back. They were drafted in at the suggestion of one of the Battenberg relatives.

Heavena Wilson i find this sort of stuff interesting because it gives people a perspective of long ago and how people lived. This was even before the radio electric lights, and people had to find ways to entertain themselves. However, it makes me sad that people today are not interested in learning about the past. This was in an era where people had to work hard for what they had unless they were born into privilege but even second and third sons of the rich had to make their own fortunes or marry a heiress. I’m more of a WW2 buff but I enjoy seeing how people lived over one hundred years ago. I wouldn’t want to wear a corset though.

At the 10:32 mark, it seems to switch to a different funeral. The first coffin is uncovered as it is being carried into the chapel. The second one has a dark covering over it. 🤷
@michaelmontagu39793 жыл бұрын
Interesting question and one I can answer. For funerals with a crown on top of the coffin, the coffin has two lids, one real, one false. The false top has a fitment on the top to hold the crown steady. What we see is the false top being removed and the coffin as normal, being carried up the steps. If you look carefully as it is lifted off the coffin you can see that the drapery is rigid, so clearly has something solid under it. The false top.

Especially around the VERY early times of recording film, notice how so many of the people look at the camera out of natural curiosity at this new technology. Not just this footage but so many others. Other footage from this time you'll almost always see multiple people having a staring contest with the camera like it's supposed to do some kind of magic trick.

At 5:03 you can see the horses are pulling the gun carriage. However, it's reported that 'the cold weather spooked the horses' and they reared up, causing the coffin to almost come off the carriage. At that point Captain Prince Louis of Battenberg stepped in and suggested to the new monarch (Edward VII) that the senior service (Royal Navy) should step in and pull the gun carriage. If you go to 5:50 you will see the Navy Ratings pulling the carriage.
@JoMarieM2 жыл бұрын
This could probably explain why they didn't use horses to pull Queen Elizabeth's coffin! As unpredictable as horses can be sometimes, they probably didn't want to take a risk with having a horse freak out, and her coffin sliding off the cart and landing on the street in front of a bunch of horrified spectators!
@TorrentUK2 жыл бұрын
@JoMarieM That's exactly the reason why Navy Ratings have pulled the gun carriage since Queen Victoria's funeral (for Edward VII, and George V, George VI, and now Elizabeth II)
@darnbunny12 жыл бұрын
Why sailors will pull the Queen's royal gun carriage? Note the switch from horse drawn to Sailor pulled at 5:06 . Things came close to disaster for the procession while the carriage was going up a hill. A hole on one of the horse's harnesses snapped, breaking the hitch to the hearse. The horses started bucking wildly and Queen Victoria’s coffin very nearly shot out from the back of the carriage. Crew members from the HMS Excellent were ordered to haul the gun carriage with ropes carrying it the rest of the way.
