Me, too. Ours was a 1950s era set that we had through the '60s when I was little, into the '70s before Mom replaced it with a maple wood set. (That she still has and that I hate to this day! 😅) The vinyl on the chairs and Formica on the table was dark grey in a marble like design. How I'd love to still have that set now! 😊

Great job. I used very thin aluminum tubing for my chairs. It bends easily but you have to bend slowly so it doesn’t kink. I was lucky enough to find a red vinyl tablecloth that worked perfectly for the upholstery and looks great on a booth seat as well. I love your videos and get so much inspiration from them. Thanks for all the ideas.
@dawsie
@dawsie Жыл бұрын
A good way to stop the kinks is to fill the tube with sand and seal each end with glue but make sure you leave enough space in the tube for the sand to move. Once done you pull off the glue plugs and pour out the sand.

I’ve never seen a miniaturist make this style of furniture- it’s so often more Victorian era. So refreshing. Also I love your card and superglue trick. I think painting the cloth created the perfect pleather look. I’m surprised at how good the back looks after you just cut the fabric along the edge. The results were awesome.
@fancifuldevices

Also wire is super easy to sand instead of glue- though that produced a good finished look.

Yes! Thank you! I'm really glad the back turned out so neat and tidy. I think it it was any thicker, it wouldn't have worked out. I should've used Fabritac instead but my bottle of glue exploded long and has a huge trail of dried glue coming out the side.

I love how you share the whole process, including what went not as expected with the seat cover and, suggesting what you would do next time round, while also coming up with a way of disuising the edges of the seat to cover up the bumps. It is definitely worth covering the plier jaws with tape as, even with harder metals, they can scratch the surface. I learnt this the hard way one making my first wire xmas decoration but, I kept it any anyway.

Such good timing, I am planning a room box of my childhood home. We were poor, so we had a mish mash of furniture. We had an antique oak dinner table(which I still own), but the chairs were all 60's metal frame chairs such as this. Just a different shaped back. I have looked all over for dollhouse versions of them, but I figured out I have to make them custom. Thank you so much for at least pointing me in the right direction. I was thinking it was going to be very difficult. It looks like it will be some work, but I think I can do it!

The chair looks really cute. If I make one, I will also put vinyl on the back of the chair to cover that exposed wire. I grew up in the 50's and I saw a lot of these chairs in the cheap kitchen sets popular at the time. The vinyl was so flimsy that the seat would tear and you would see the stuffing in the slashes. They were pretty awful. LOL

On bending wire you could make a jig from wood block drill holes at the points you want to bend the wire and add wooden dowels, this would give you consistent shape for all of the wire frame work. This way every chair will be the same then. I was thinking this as I make ear wires for earrings I make and they must be identical so I have jigs for my jewellery making.

Not at this time. I don't really like making multiples of things. I'm also pretty busy. Maybe someone could design a 3d print file and make you some? I know there are people on Etsy who design files.

Do you have trouble squeezing your glues through your precision bottles? I bought a set of bottles and a bunch of different tips. But its really diffucult to get the glue through the tips, even with storing the bottles upside down. Its possible its just my hands (arthritis), but it doesn't look like you're squeezing really hard. Is there a trick?

My nozzles get clogged all the time. I use a straight pin to clear it out.

A secret upcoming project!? 😃 My eyes are wide with gleeful anticipation!! Girl~ 😳I just realized while watching this that your knowledge of MCM furniture has to be more from research, less, if at all, from memory (unless your parents' décor was/is heavily influenced by that design, which would have been much better than the brassy 80s and whatever the 90s were...) Anyway, please don't be offended, but I *hated* this style of chair back in the day, at least the lesser quality ones that I would typically encounter! these chairs were so common in the 70s and into the 80s even. There was always at least one stopper missing form the ends of the frame pieces - which were hollow, btw. So, scrapes, cuts, and scratches were inevitable. 😕 Also, the screws holding the seat and back would frequently fall out - never to be replaced - so a fidgety kid could easily get her fingers pinched! 😵‍💫Your method of gathering the vinyl at the corners is spot on (not the nice fold you demoed, but what you actually did). That is how they were made; this is why the screws would come loose! And there was very little concern for whether there were noticeable gaps between any of the parts. 😶Not nearly as well made as your mini! Seriously, though, I really love this demo, and the way you accomplished the design of the frame. I tend to forget about painting fabric to affect certain looks and textures; the paint and mod podge mixture is perfect. An additional coat or two when you change the color will only improve on what is already nicely done! The chair is a perfect representation, and I truly admire your design and work! 🥰 If you've stayed with me this far, 😇I would love to see your design and take on the wood framed counterpart of the MCM chair design.🤍

You're right! I didn't grow up with chairs from the 50s. I was around chairs from the 1970s. They were made in a similar style. I probably won't make another chair for a while. I just needed this particular chair for a secret project 🤫

Yes. I washed mine with dish soap, then dried them with a hair dryer to prevent rust.

You might try a drop of hot glue to make feet, sort of like rubber feet.

What might be shocking: that paper is exactly the same material used in the actual chair. The full-scale version just uses 1/4" thick stock.
