@trunishapatel74568 жыл бұрын
+TheDarkness Hispanics are people that speak Spanish, especially one of Latin American descent, living in the US. Slaves are people who are the legal property of another person and are forced to obey them. Native Americans are any members of any of the indigenous peoples of North and South America and the Caribbean Islands So basically what they are saying is that shopping malls are being built over the dead bodies of these people, just so that everyone forgets what it was like back then. (That's how interpreted it however, especially because I am from Australia so I could very well be wrong). :)
@user-my1uk7wc9g8 жыл бұрын
Exactly
@jrton13668 жыл бұрын
+Trunisha Patel There were no oppressed Hispanics, the Spanish and Portuguese conquered more territory in the Americas than every northern european empire combined (hence why most of the americas speak Spanish or Portuguese), The Portuguese also actually transported around 50-60% of all the slaves transported from Africa to the Americas, and the Spanish supposedly killed almost 20 million natives during there colonisation (although thats hard to verify) of south and central america. So when she says "bones of the hispanics", she's likening slaves, to the biggest importer of slaves to the Americas, ridiculous right?

+Fardin Salam very very true. Sorry for making a hasty generalization, but really, it feels like these people are ignoring the main message of the performance
@jrton13668 жыл бұрын
+kataigidajj I raised that point, I'm not a "conservative", I'm not from the states, I have no political opinion of what's going on in the US because I don't really know enough to care. One thing I do care about is history, and to compare the hispanics that existed at the same time as the slaves and natives is NOT a very "liberal" thing to do. It reveals the agenda of these people is not to promote a factual argument but to promote a political agenda. I believe that presenting Hispanics in the same category as slaves and natives is deliberate misinformation to promote an anti white-middle-america, as a non american that's the tone I got and sometimes one small bit of misinformation like that is a giveaway, people on the far right do it ll the time.
@katieorr25948 жыл бұрын
+J Rton ok fair enough the hispanics came over from Europe to South and Central America.. but they also occupied the area of texas, new mexico and california.. but were driven out by Americans.. and President James Polk incited war with Mexico in 1846 and forced them to surrender. In the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico had to cede California, New Mexico territory and Texas - the US gained around 1/2 million square miles of territory. Polk and a lot of the southerners wanted to keep pushing for the rest of Mexico however Northern powers in Congress blocked this. Attempts were also made on Nicaragua and Cuba. So in my eyes although the massacres of the Spanish conquistadores are also horrific and just another example of european colonisation, this still by no means justifies American settlers pushing out and killing the Mexicans for the land they had already settled on. Also this is poetry, of course it has an agenda, and being a non-american white girl, i don't feel its promoting an anti-white america. Issues need to be raised like this. With Fox news and all those news channels so often blasting right wing propaganda into peoples ears, personally I think its a very good thing for young kids, boys and girls, to listen to something so blunt like this. People can't learn about their country's history, or how not to behave, if all the sensitive issues are constantly swept under the rug.
@jrton13668 жыл бұрын
Katie Orr "Their country's history" Their country was NOT built on the bones of Hispanics. That is the statement i have the key issue with. Trying to convince people to think "oh those poor hispanics" in the same breath as mentioning slaves and indigenous peoples of that period. You're talking two colonisers slugging it out over stolen land, and you think its fair to equate them to slaves and the indigenous? Oh so because some politician wanted to expand further, that somehow contributes to the argument that the United States was built "on the bones of the hispanics"? The hispanics were NOT victims in the colonial americas lol.

This reminds me of a Poem called "Welcome to Society" by Erin Hanson, and it goes like this "Welcome to society, We hope you enjoy your stay, And please feel free to be yourself, As long as it's in the right way, Make sure you love your body, Not too much or we'll tear you down, We'll bully you for smiling, And then wonder why you frown, We'll tell you that you're worthless, That you shouldn't make a sound, And then cry with all the others, As you're buried in the ground, You can fall in love with anyone, As long as it's who we choose, And we'll let you have your opinions, But please shape them to our views, Welcome to society, We promise that we won't deceive, And one more rule now that you're here, There's no way you can leave."

For any non spoken English people who are fighting to understand everything this 3 incredible girls say: Here in America and every single state they have a set of standards for every subject, a collection of lessons that the teacher’s required to teach by the end of the term. But the greatest lessons you will ever teach us will not come from your syllabus. The greatest lesssons you will ever teach us you will not even remember. You never told us what we weren’t allowed to say. We just learned how to hold our tongues.

Now somewhere in America there is a child holding a copy of ‘Catcher in the Rye’ and there is a child holding a gun. But only one of these things have been banned by their state government and, it’s not the one that can rip through flesh, it’s the one that says “‘F’ You” on more pages than one. Because we must control what people say. how they think. And if they want to become the overseer of their own selves then we’ll show them a real one.
@frenchfanzel78438 жыл бұрын
And somewhere in America there is a child sitting at his mother’s computer reading the home page of the KKK’s website and that’s open to the public. But that child will have never read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ because his school has banned it for it’s use of the ‘N’-word. Maya Angelou is prohibited because we’re not allowed to talk about rape in school. We are taught that just because something happens doesn’t mean we are to talk about it. They build us brand new shopping malls so we’ll forget where we’re really standing - ON THE BONES of the Hispanics, ON THE BONES of the slaves, ON THE BONES of the Native Americans, ON THE BONES of those who fought just to speak.

Transcontinental railroads to Japanese internment camps. There are things missing from our history books. But we were taught that it is better to be silent than to make them uncomfortable. Somewhere in America private school girls search for hours through boutiques trying to find the prom dress of their dreams; while kids on the south side spend hours searching through the lost and found ’cause winter’s coming soon and that’s the only jacket they have. Kids are late to class for working the midnight shift. They give awards for best attendance but not for keeping your family off the streets.

Then they’ll get in the backseat of a car with all their friends singing how they’re “‘Bout that life” and “We can’t stop”. Source: LYBIO.net Somewhere in America schools are promoting self confidence while they whip out their scales and shout out your body fat percentage in class. Where the heftier girls are hiding away and the slim fit beauties can’t help but giggle with pride. The preppy kids go thrift shopping because they think it sounds fun. But we go ’cause that’s all we’ve got money for ’cause mama works for the city; mama only gets paid once a month.

1:54 hits hard. I went to a private Christian school growing up and our history book was white washed. We never got past early America and we where taught that even tho Columbus did horrific things oh that’s ok cuz he “founded” America so it’s All forgivable. Whenever there was a school shooting we wouldn’t acknowledge it it would only be and let the families who lost people be ok now let’s go praise jesus and sing worship songs and they never went farther then that. I’m so thankful for my teacher who teaches me right now because he wants to teach us about current events and stuff that other teachers wouldn’t teach us. If there’s a school shooting or anything we take part of class to learn about what happened and to acknowledge who died and what happened. There was so much stuff missing from my history book we spent more time learning about indentured servants then slaves. I was never taught what I am being taught today I was held back from that knowledge because apparently it wasn’t “school appropriate” teach us about how Columbus was a great guy but never spend much time on learning about slavery.

Um.. I went to a crappy charter school. So I wouldn't know, but.. They SERIOUSLY don't talk about the Japanese internment camps in school?! They spend WEEKS talking about the holocaust.

Actually, no. I read about it in Lisa See's Shanghai Girls when I was a kid. The teacher spoke more about the war itself. Are you kidding? Any kind of terrible things that Americans did in American history are either glossed over or omitted. They don't give us a CHANCE to admit we make mistakes, we're just under the impression we don't make them.

It has nothing to do with the subject, but probably one of the coolest classes my middle school ever offered was a summer class about the world's most nefarious serial killers. It was all about their crimes and exploring their psyches and trying to figure out the why of it all.

To people who say guns aren't the problem between 2014-2015 over 350,000 people have been killed by guns. Between 1914-2015 3,000 have been killed my terrorists. I don't know about you but to me those statistics don't add up.

Is it the gun that kills the person or the person holding the gun? Think about that. Also, statistics have proven when guns are allowed to be legally carried around, the crime rate goes down.
@cindyhuang80088 жыл бұрын
+Nadia Makmak obviously a person does need to pull the trigger, but if guns weren't so accessible it would be much harder to get one or find other means to kill. Guns are less regulated than driving. A teenager who wants a car has to take lessons and pass multiple tests, including a practical one. But any teenager who wants a gun can get one, and thus has the power to kill. Ultimately, the person is doing the killing but the gun allows them to.

Can I? Nope, sorry. Guess I am too annoyed by the victimhood narrative and see not how this change anything. Worse, their complain that they would have learned this behaviour seems to imply that there was an intent to teach them that, which seems to me like paranoid thinking. Don't get me wrong, some of the social issues they mention are a problem, but many points they make are questionable, and sadly they provide no solutions, so it is overall rather useless.
@kitahsushi9 жыл бұрын
Drudenfusz You're useless. You speaking agains't this is useless. Your existence is useless. You are of no use to society, you are of no use to anyone, you're no use to yourself. What have you done that this girls haven't? Nothing. Because you are useless.
@Drudenfusz9 жыл бұрын
kitahsushi Guess you've been talking to yourself, since this is some great projectng you do their. So, don't assume others are as useless as you are just because they have a different opinion, since thinking that only your opinion is the one that matters is a good way to get to fascism. So, if I am useless, then you are clearly hurtful to society!

The thrift store one hit hard. I’m the oldest girl in my family, and 99% of my wardrobe is made up of my mom’s old clothes or my older brothers’ really old hand-me-downs. Unfortunately I have much larger breasts, which means I can’t wear half of my mom’s and my brothers’ shirts and finding good bras that actually fit is super expensive. And half the shirts I can wear I always got in trouble for in school because I was “showing too much cleavage” despite the fact that barely any skin was really showing.
