To everyone saying I am supporting impala, I am not, I simply needed a pair of skates in the box in order for this episode to make sense. Pigeon graciously gave me these skates so I could make this video. I am not saying support impala, and I am also not judging those who have impalas. I’m simply making a video for all the new people who just got skates with literally the only new pair of skates I could get my hands on.

Just turned 50 recently, and haven't skated since I was a teenager. I felt like I was 10 years young again, after getting back onto skates last night. Couldn't understand why I was having so much trouble, until I watched this video -- the skates had very loose trucks, which gave me a lack of control. Awesome video, thank you!

I’m 59, grew up on skates. But it’s been several years since I’ve skated. Got me some Foxy skates…not sure about quality bc I always bought my skates from the store at the rink and they were good plus they did all the pretrip work for me. So, I get my skates and try to skate and it was so hard! I thought to myself, maybe I’m just too old for skating. I put them away for a month and decided to try again. I tried to roll a wheel w my hand and discovered the wheels didn’t even make a complete circle. Trucks were tight. So I began my research and I found this channel. Yay! I understand much more now. But I can only get one wheel loosened w the skate tool I bought. Our local skating rink no longer has a skate store. But at least I have a solution and hopefully will get these wheels turning! Happy skating!

This was such a life saver! I've been skating for five days and had NO IDEA that my wheels were too tight. I was getting on okay, but also couldn't work out why I couldn't do a c sweep or go backwards even slightly. Then I loosened them and immediately fell over backwards. Which was also my first fall! So hooray! Also, thank you for the lacing video - I needed to get my heal further back into the, erm, heal but I was lacing them so tight to achieve this that my feet were killing me after 20 mins. Can you make a video of necessary/recommended equipments to keep your skates in good shape? How to clean your skates? Also when to know to buy new wheels or toe stoppers by the looks of it? New skater here and a new subscriber! This channel has been really helpful, thank you.
@l.a.k4 жыл бұрын
I’d say maintenance depends on what skates you’ve got. Usually you can get by with your skate tools and the stuff you need to clean bearings with (at the very least some speed cream so the bearings will roll after you’ve cleaned them). If you have light coloured suede skates and you want to keep them pristine you could consider buying suede cleaner. You should probably get new wheels if they have a flat spot (a worn spot where the wheel is flattened because of T-stops or lots of sliding) or if you’re frustrated with your speed or agility and feel like you’ve outgrown your current wheels. It’s also a good idea to change your wheels if you decide to, for example, go to the skate park or to the rink. Adjustable toe stops should DEFINITELY be replaced when you see the stem of the toe stops poking out the other side. Preferably you replace them a little bit before this happens. Usually you have a dominant foot, and you can swap your toe stops before you’ll have to get a new set. Bolt on toe stops need to be replaced before you reach the bolt keeping it in place. If you don’t, and the bolt wears down because you keep braking on it, the screwhead will lose it’s definition and you won’t be able to take off your toe stop.

Would you suggest looser trucks for beginners? Haven't skated in two decades 🤔
@inesecile44303 жыл бұрын
@@MNerestant83 It depends on your preference. With looser trucks you have more movement and therefore it's less stable. Less loose trucks are more stable. So me personally would suggest to not loose them too much until you get comfortable in them an refind your balance on the skates. As soon as you wish more movement for piruettes and stuff you can loosen them up a bit, just not too much. Hope that helps :)

Hello! I’m new to skating. Of course I did it when I was younger and it was so much fun, however, at 40 years old and getting bk out there after a couple of decades, I’m not seeing how this was EVER a fun activity for me in the past 🥵. So I thought it would be a great way for my 16 yr old daughter and I to bond( she loves to skate) and also a great way for me to stay active and healthy at my age. Brought my first pair of skates and I was SUPER excited! They are beautiful the Impala rose gold ones. I’ve taken them to the rink 3 times now and each time I’ve had to take them off and go with skates loaned to u at the rink which were way WAY more comfy. My Impalas feel very hard on the inside. I’m also flat footed so I feel like my flattened wide feet are rubbing up against the hard inside wall of the skate. Then, even with the loaner rink skates, they are more comfortable but my shins hurt tremendously!! And my back. So at this point I honestly feel like giving up on skating when I want to love it so bad. I’m even taking lessons but each time I leave the rink I feel discouraged and like maybe this isn’t my thing. 😩any advice?? I’ve had the wheels loosened a bit. I’m also wondering if this is a common complaint with impalas as far as them being a “hard” skate? Like the shell of the skate is hard, like it’s impossible to break in. I’d love your, or anyones feed back. Thanks…..oh, also I read your comment about supporting Impalas…..again I’m a newbie……is there something I should know about the Impala brand??? I just got excited about getting bk out there to skate, looked on line for a pair and impalas were affordable and cute so I didn’t know really what to look for

I just got my pair of roller skates this week (april 10, 2022), and, I'm not a newbie skater, but, the last time I skated was about 30 years ago. I'm 67 and it's been pretty hard to get a pair of skates from 10 years ago. Thanks to online selling, I was able to get a new pair. Anyway, as I've said, I'm not a newbie skater, but I can say that at this time, maybe I don't know how to skate anymore. I have to try my new pair after this week. The point of my comment is actually about the condition of the wheels, especially of new pairs. The ones that I bought are definitely made in China. The bearings are ABEC-7 or 608zz, meaning, metal seal instead of 2RS or rubber seal. I removed them, all of them. I pried open the seals (one side only) and I found out that they did not have grease in them. Maybe a drop or two of oil was present, but no grease. And in one of them, 1 ball bearing was missing. They are wobbly, even after I put grease in them, but, a bit more stable than when no grease was in them. Another thing about these skates, when you advised us to loosen the nut on each wheel if they are super tight, and they tend to lock the wheel, this is something that makes things awful. The reason for the nut is to tighten the wheel and keep it tight or locked, that is why the nut used is a self locking type. This means, the nut should be tight, always. The question is, how come the wheels do not turn anymore when they are tight? This is what I am going to answer. How to make the wheels turn freely even when the nuts are tightened. I am a motorcycle mechanic. The wheels of motorcycles are rotating because of the set of ball bearings, left and right. The wheelset is installed onto the fork or rear swingarm with an axle, and held in place by a bolt and a nut, with the bolt acting as the axle passing through the 2 bearings. The nuts on the front and rear wheels are super tight. (9 kg/m2) This is very tight, and yet, the wheels are turning very freely. Why so? Because in between the two bearings is a spacer or a tube that fits the axle and the distance or length of this tube (spacer) is almost exactly the distance between the two bearings when installed onto the wheel. When the fastening nut is tightened, the inner races of the two bearings are kept tight by the spacer, so that the outer races of the two bearings can freely rotate, while the inner races of the two bearings are stationary. What does this mean? It means that even the wheels of roller skates need spacers. Without the spacer, when the nut of a wheel is tightened, it pushes the inner races of the two bearings inward, thus creating a not normal force on the balls on the outer races of the bearing. Oftentimes, when this force is high, or the nut is tightened, it fixes the movement of the balls and the races of the bearing and prevents the bearing with the wheel from turning or rotating. Seemingly, loosening the nut makes it turn, but actually, it does not solve the problem. You will be forced to be vigilant of the condition of the wheels so that you have to tighten or loosen nuts while skating. Because of the missing spacers, I was forced to fabricate 8 spacers using metal tubes from converted materials. I bought washers small enough to fit with the bearings snugly so that the wheels will rotate freely even when the nuts are tightened. When I was trying to configure the wheel on an axle, I was tightening so hard that the axle was almost pulled from the molding. The nuts must be tight, but not soooo much. So far, I have been successful. Next week will be skating time.

I’d say when you start feeling limited by the size or hardness of your current wheels (or when they break or wear out of course). I changed mine when I started to get really frustrated because I wanted more speed and the ones I had couldn’t offer that.

I got my first pair when I was 6 years old. I self taught myself and when ever you feel like it really. Once you teach ur self it’s almost impossible to forget. But yea it doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you can walk😊

If your a beginner skater, would it be beneficial to not losen the wheels?
@poolhelm97644 жыл бұрын
No it would just make learning I lot harder
@stella7174 жыл бұрын
Well, if your really new to skating, I'd say its okay to start like that. But once you get the basic hang of it, then you should loosen it.

I'm a beginner and loose wheels scare tf outta me. I'm so much more confident with tight wheels and a bit of a tighter truck. Tbh, it might be because I'm heavier set.
@ericjordan60594 жыл бұрын
It is better to loosen your wheels to the point they roll. I'm very experienced so I not only loosen my wheels (to the point they move a bit on the wheel axle from side to side), but I loosen my trucks, take off the stopper, have installed a shorter plate and slippery wheels.

I got some new vanilla skates coming to me on Friday, i’m really excited I’ve never spent this much money on a pair of skates almost $500, I felt like I deserved a new pair of skates because I’ve been working so hard, I tried a few months ago some skates from Academy, some roller derby skates just to see if I wanted to get back into it, couple months after that I end up breaking the skates because I was really getting into it, so I decided to spend some money and get a good pair that fit me,

what do you recommend if the wheels roll too fast on their own? ie, I can't even control the direction that i shift my weight or my speed because they roll out from under me
@shawngraham89253 жыл бұрын
I wish someone would answer this too. I’m thinking if we tighten the wheels. As she said the tighter the wheels it feels like you’re skating in mud. Maybe at the beginning that’s not a bad thing??
@agus_not_august3 жыл бұрын
@@shawngraham8925 i’ve heard some mixed stuff on this, that tightening the wheels can help, but other people say you shouldn’t loosen the wheels, but i’m still a little unsure

I'm super late to this convo, but it might be a balance issue as well. Like if you're leaning backward even slightly, your feet are gonna roll out in front of your body and you'll fall on your butt. It's important to keep your head and torso in line vertically or even forward a little bit and use your knees to get closer to the ground so you'll be more stable. Shoutout to Dirty School of Skate, who posts amazingly helpful tutorial videos where I learned this.

I so glad to hear you say this! The packing in the toes isn't just in there, and practically speaking invisible, it's difficult to get it out. You can sweep your finger right on it and it doesn't matter. You can easily think it's the wrong size. Thinking of all the people I heard on various places talking about how different sizes were in real life vs. skate sizes and go 2 down etc. There's paper in the shoe!
