Quest 3 Wireless Charging is Now Half the Price

I have the AMVR rechargeable grip dock that used the same batteries.. but they don't last long... so i bought a battery spot welder and spot welded a couple of taps on one of my favorite brand of rechargeable batteries (that hold 2900mah of charge) and then used electrical tape to keep the taps in place and it works flawless!

My AMVR Quest 2 wireless charging controller dock uses the same exact batteries with the silver contacts, so it seems they're common and generic. I haven't yet had an instance where the battery capacity hasn't gotten me through my whole VR session. They probably have diminished somewhat in the almost 2 years of regular use and occasionally I do have to clean off the contact points to ensure they charge up but they haven't disappointed me yet.

This thing looks cool with the lights and stuff. I got myself the Meta charging dock mainly for the controller batteries, but i ended up loving it. It even charges my Kiwi comfort battery headstrap w/headset together, AND still charges my controllers with the grip covers on! 😁

This dock doesn't charge Quest 3 when using the AMVR facial interface. Works fine using the default facial interface. Just emailed support on this, see what they say.

Huh. That's good to know. How does the AMVR differ from the original? Does it prevent charging on the official dock as well?

@@bringhurstvr Not sure, didn't have the official dock as it was too expensive for me. From my untrained eyes, the AMVR facial interface bottom protrudes out a bit more than the official facial interface so it prevents the pogo pins to make contact with the headset. Shame quite like this dock.

@@bringhurstvr If you really want to grow your hair fast - Eat a lot of proteins or meat in your diet including Jello/Gelatin, don't use shampoo AT ALL, hydrate with conditioner maybe twice a week and brush your hair 3 times a day at least... and have the ends trimmed regularly (just take 3mm off the tips) - I promise you this works.

The D.Gruoiza Dock seems awesome for it's price but it's also one of those products where I don't want to be the tester you know? I don't want to wake up one day with a half melted controller.... the electricity flows around the entire battery to charge... seems sketch imo

I got my dock pre order with a 512 and meta controller hand straps, got it all just before they came out, my setup with 3party batt strap, it’s the best Q3 setup on the planet.

I ordered this dock; It looks like a great deal. I am using the Bobo VR S3 Pro. Hopefully it will work with it, else I'll return it. The Battery charging looks cool, but I am not about to take off my controller hand strap. Simple AA batteries last a long time with the Quest controllers, so it's not really an issue for me.

Thanks for the helpful information. Being new to VR, I purchased the Kiwi RGB Vertical Charging Stand along with the SPC Battery Head Strap for Meta Quest 3. I had no idea it only charged the Headset. The controllers are always dead the next week I pick them up. I was close to buying a crappy charging dock from Apexinno on Amazon. Glad I decided to peruse further and found your video!

Meta didn't "overcomplicate" things when it came to the controller batteries. They have a inductive charger with a high capacity. This allows them to be used with third party strap covers and wraps. Meta's issue though is they sell everything at a stupidly high markup, probably to make up for the fact that they are selling the HMD's at cost. The one and only thing that this charger did right was actually use the damn fast charge pogo pins on the front of the headset, something that every other third party seems to completely ignore.

That dock is lush for such a small bit o' cash! I'll take 2! My future Quest 3 will be resting its bum on a different one every other day... the life of a spoiled Quest it shall have... I will give it everything it deserves... and in return it will heal the broken parts of my soul and complete me.

it doesnt work with the kiwi strap with battery tho, it charges the headseat but not the kiwi battery, its a shame but other than that I love it!

Yeah, I use those silicone hand grips with the straps so this won’t work for me. I just use some Duracell rechargeable batteries in my controllers. The need design for battery cover is so easy to remove not a big deal for me. But. This thing does look cool! 😉👌

A very complicated solution to a problem that really does not exist. The controllers use one standard AA battery that lasts for ages and are cheap and easy to replace....NO PROBLEM! On the other hand, a nice SIMPLE dock for the headset would be great.

lol "ages". you obviously dont play very much, like at all. I killed the batteries that came with it in a handful of short play sessions, same experience with Quest 2. Been using rechargable batteries for controllers for years at this point. Non rechargable batteries are a no beuno, waste of money. And this type of recharging is even better still than rechargable AA's. I wouldnt slag on the level of conveniance this unit brings. Is it necessary? certainly not, but its super convenient and your Quest gets its own tidy spot to sit.

To my knowledge, nothing but the BoboVR dock will charge the batteries. That and a cable. Even the official Meta dock doesn't charge the battery when it's attached to the headstrap.

But integrated battery head straps, where they aren't hot swappable, seem to have a good chance of charging, according to different people I've talked to. So the Kiwi and AnnaPro are both candidates.

Might possibly get this and just charge the battery with a cable, and buy a dock for the battery when they release it. Seems very messy, but I`m not sure how else I can pull off the clean storage. You'll have to remind me. Are you talking about an adapter so it works with other battery headstraps? Because they include an adapter for the standard headset. In terms of trying to make it work with another battery headstrap, no, I haven't found a magnetic y-splitter yet.

Just got one, thx for the info!! if I want to just leave it on this dock, when not using my quest, is there some sort of safety cut off with the dock so it doesn’t overcharge or damage long-term internal battery usage? I’ve seen that as a concern with most videos I’ve watched about charging past or after the headset gets to 100%

The headset itself should have protocols in place to take that into account, whether it's via a dock or a USB C cable. I can't speak to the dock itself, except to say that I haven't had any issues related to over charging. Maybe someone else can chime in with their own takes.

I don't fully understand the hype on all these wireless charging docks that utilize the three pins to charge. the most important aspect is charging the quest 3 during use, as the battery dies within the blink of an eye. How I charge it overnight is only of little interest. Charging during use will inevitably involve the usb c charging port. So focussing on elegant ways to charge via the usb port is much more important.

It's because between the Quest 1 and 2 I routinely had the USB C port fail. Had to replace the Quest 1 twice. The less you use it the longer it lasts.

@@bringhurstvr that’s certainly a valid argument. Actually I needed to replace my quest 3 due charging port failure as well. I have the kiwi dock and was planning to keep the small magnetic usb c insert in the quest 3 at all time and connect any charger via the magnetic connector so that there is as little wearing off as possible for the usb port. But you make a point and i will consider buying such a dock in addition.

Nope. Looks like when it comes to the Elite Strap it's not as simple as just making sure the pins are touching. Looks like meta's firmware is responsible for making sure the USB C port can feed the headstrap (instead of just intaking power). I can't be completely sure, but from what I've read it looks like the dock may have to be programmed to "tell" the headset it's charging on an authentic Meta dock. Similar to what apples done with their iPads for a long time. Which is to say - these guys might have to update the dock with firmware every time the headset gets an update. I won't know for sure until I've tried more of these things though.

Here's the real question, does it/will it backfeed through USB to charge other non-official batteries? ie a bobovr M3 (with the original supplied "B2" battery), will the dock backfeed through the quest to external batteries? or is that a limitation from the Quest 3?

I can't speak for other batteries, but the BoboVR M2 does not charge via the dock. But I'll try plugging a battery up to it without going through the headstrap. I kind of doubt it though.

Would be amazing if Meta actually thought about back feeding, so you could just slap it on a dock and it would charge the headset *and* backup/elite battery. Sure, I guess I could go get the bobovr dock too and slap the batteries on that, but then I have all these docks for all these accessories just eating up space. I generally don't play much wireless though, I like high bitrate image quality too much, and Link cable just dominates in that regard.

Its made over complicated by meta so you have no other chance than purchasing Metas docking station. There is no other way taking advantage of the place inside your controllers than putting a normal AA battery or using metas overpriced shit.

Not sure why you're not getting longer life with Q3 non-rechargeable AA's. With good quality Duracell alkaline I'm getting +1.5-2 months. Even a bit better than I got with my Q2 controllers (~1.5 months). Not as environment-friendly as rechargeable, but far fewer battery changeouts and I just use the stock 18w charger for my Q3 headset battery. Just don't get me into trouble with Greta Thunberg , lol! Thanks for your vids mate. They are always fun to watch. Also, good to see you part your hair on the left side like myself, and all the other cool kids with high IQ's do, or maybe just ones with left to right cowlicks, lol! Cheers.

It takes about 2-3 hrs to charge, but i only play for like 2-3 hrs tops, and then i need a few hours before i will play again. But if your an all day type gamer, or you can go for 4-5 hours, then go again in an hr, then yea, get the 45w 😆
