1:11:52: It's worth noting that Squidtepig actually found some Out of Bounds clips a couple of months ago that save a few minutes in any% - you can skip a lot of Boil Hole, which cuts about six minutes out of the run.

Squidtepig ended up finding a lot of bugs. The recent quest for glory run was about an hour and half long. Lots of out of bounds and glitching out spirits to give anywhere from 5 to 40 from a single spirit.

You know what? Played it through till the end, and it was so dry and soulless. Today, I refer to it as "Generic JRPG 64." But, like you, there was some charm, some magnetism that kept me playing till the end--it wasn't the game itself, I promise you! Just some ineffable...something, that made it interesting and memorable despite being a huge piece of garbage.

***** Well the idea of leveling your guy with 4 magic elements was cool, i just enjoyed to see what magic i get. Combat was overall challenging if you are underleveld or simply not use water to heal, it gets pretty difficult, especially in boss fights, as you actual "can" avoid a fair deal of spells by movement, which i thought was a pretty cool idea for an otherwise "turn based" combat. Finding the magic points in the game world was also a way to get the player into exploring for exactly that. So that part was the "good" of the game, kinda like pokemon lets you play just to find more pokemon, find more upgrades and get them stronger with different abilities ; the world itself however is boring, the story dull as it gets and the overall world super linear and not really nice to look at. At least i am the kind of player that played the game 3 times (yea 3 times) just to use different magic and focus on just 1 element (played with water only, fire only [as melee], and as earth only) ; only wind kinda felt shitty so i stopped that run. But yea, i think you can produce a pretty interesting game with a magician that has 4 elements all the time, combine the spells and all that might produce a very interesting combat and gameplay.

@ayrennar403710 жыл бұрын
People who hate on this game bandwagon hate for no reason. The leveling system is fun. You get stats for running, taking hits, dealing hits, losing health, gaining health, using mana, and of course killing enemies. Not a new system, but the game had a fun leveling system, just a simple stat grind. Unlocking each ability, wondering what you would get next. Some very confusing mazes as a kid too. Some bosses you had to grind for. Just a solid started RPG. It's turn base fighting is way less boring than FF1-9, but I guess those are for story only.
@Sonicisbadazz9 жыл бұрын
I won't disagree that the leveling system is interesting, even though I wasn't a fan of the game. And if you're looking for something a bit more action oriented than the "stand-still-till-it's-your-turn" style of older FF games, then I can understand liking this battle system more as well. (Even as a kid, I saw the small innovations that were provided by the overall playing field where you have to get to the edge of the circle to escape and have the potential to dodge attacks instead of relying purely on luck for whether attacks will miss.) I think the real problem people had with it is that it's stripped of so many traditional RPG mechanics. There's no money system; just finding random items on the world map and getting others for FREE when going to towns. That doesn't just defy typical RPGs; it defies LOGIC. You only have one party member, which makes your abilities feel very limited when you're encountering 4+ monsters on screen at a time, even if your individual character has plenty of spells to choose from. Finally, though it seems to make an effort to have an okay FRAMEWORK for a plot, and it makes a valiant attempt with its graphics of creating the sensation o being on a quest, it doesn't have much story or atmosphere to make RPG players invested in what's happening. If you want a simpler way to put it, consider that three years prior, the SNES was alive with games from Square like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, and Super Mario RPG. I think a lot of people were still expecting the N64 to find a way to return to those golden days, and Quest 64--despite getting some things right--is just not on the same level. But in watching this stream, with my clinical depression days long behind me, it DOES look like fun. Maybe someday I'll give it another try.

Olivysg Its a very basic kind of adventure game, very basic combat, very basic exploration and pretty linear levels. Story is more or less non-existent, but combat can be quite challenging if you arent overleveld, especially bosses. The magic is kinda cool for the game, as it has many different spells and you have to experiment a little what you actual need (especially if you run with no water magic, makes it much harder). Not a complete crap game, its just very basic kind of game. You can easily spend like 10 hours in the game and be done with it. Clearly not a 10/10 game, but its also not as bad that its painfull (as controlls in the game actual work fairly well, i wasnt frustrated or anything).
@FrigidPhoenix11 жыл бұрын
ThisNameIsBanned I agree. I think if they worked more on it, developed the story more (especially the ending, the ending leaves much to be desired) and developed the world, adding more mechanics to make it less empty, then it could have been a fairly solid RPG for the 64, a console that really lacked in that department.

+Xane Myers Also, "power problem"? How did they get a power problem that leaves the computer streaming the footage and ONLY the left footage perfectly fine?
@TheRisingOmega8 жыл бұрын
Well, they could be using different outlets for the equipment, and power surges can happen on single connections, not all outlets are connected to the same circuit so it makes sense why only some equipment would die out for that time.
@TheRisingOmega8 жыл бұрын
Most likely their streaming software adjusting to the media as it comes back in, a lot of capture cards (mainly HDMI Capture cards like Elgato's) go to black and white when they are either not hooked up properly, or when they are adjusting to changes in the stream, you don't see this when they change games on stream because they change the "scene" on their streaming software so its not showing the capture card footage. If they are using Elgato's to stream this run, its totally reasonable since it happens to me all the time, other capture cards probably do the same thing but I'm not 100% sure.

Lol I remember back then when playing this game on my N64 i was not able to save my game because I did not have the thing you suppose to connect on the Back of the controller so I would only ever get to the first boss fight in the woods beat him and stop playing after that. But one day I really wanted to beat this game and I knew the only way I can was to play through the whole game with out stopping and keep in mind I did not have much experience in this game and had no idea what to do next after that point but somehow I did it. I got done in 12 hours form starting at 5Pm and ending at 5Am most of all that time I used up was form not knowing what to do next and just running around everywhere looking for things. I mostly was just using wind and water for everything at around the end of the game is when things got really hard I had to try over and over to beat some of the last boss's into I did it. Lol I still don't know how I play through this whole game for 12 long hard hours not knowing what to expect next and beat it for that one and only time ever lol I was surprised at my N64 did not break or anything because it took a beating that day but it hold on all the way to the end just like I did that day

I have never played this game, and it doesn't seem like an interesting game (even for the time) but there is something i noticed, and maybe somebody can point out if im wrong, but, to cast meteor you use 2 yellows and 1 red (or at least thats what i see) which would mean, that leveling red thingy would in fact make the meteor spell stronger, right ?, or is that no how the spells work ?. also, judging by the review PBG did on this game, water has the more OP spell, is that true ?. if so, why not just lvl up water ? (yellow only seems to be lvled up for meteor).
@ThisNameIsBanned11 жыл бұрын
Water is so OP as it simply has healing and all the spells that make the game actual "easy", as otherwise you have to rely on items to heal you, which is MUCH more difficult as its highly limited resource. For the spells, they are all just 1 element, you just menu through the spells as the game only shows 4 due to the C-Buttons.

If you got 22 points in fire as well, you'd have far more consistency with power stick 2, than you would with Avalanche. From the looks of your heal spell not getting stronger, you can probably save 25 points in water to put into fire, or hell, even wind for comedic value.

I may be hinging on nothing, but I am entirely sure the developers intended for a fifth tier of spells with the final empty tier and due to their rushing just axed it altogether. Other people may find it to be mediocre, but comparing it to many RPGs of its time there just were not any like it at all in terms of the battle system. The scenery is rather pleasant to look at and even though there is practically no character development in the game at least it does establish some build up to the Eletale book prior to you entering it. That is, only if you enter the desert city. Out of all the bosses, I think Solvaring is the hardest simply because you'll likely get to him, on your first run at least, with all your elements near even. I also wish some of the later enemies did not cancel out any of your buffs as that really hurts for fire/ or earth/ or wind run only.

Like they said around 26:00 before naming the changes at around 28:00, a run of the American game would last a lot longer. Plus, since the American release is a lot harder (24 MP in US compared to 80 in JP), it is much less marathon friendly.

What a terrible fucking game saved by two incredibly intelligent and talented speedrunners. No one should have had to play this as a kid back in 1997- and that's what I did. Fun FACT, I actually never beat this game. I can't even remember 90% of it and I'm 100% positive I played hours upon hours of it. Random encounters every few seconds, boring turn based fights, a completely bitch basic RPG system, the dullest sound effects, music, graphics and gameplay all combined into one giant turd of an awful N64 exclusive.
