my thing is, Having a puck for the VR headsets doesn't necessarily mean that the VR headset has to have no processes in it. just allow more processing load to be handled at once. like imaging a puck as powerful as a Portable PC gaming handheld. tracking could be handled by the Quest, while the puck handles the gaming stuff. Could be a great combo
@tek535818 күн бұрын
Agreed, but i think he's buying into the meta pro investor propaganda. If anything breaks on the quest its glued together, you have to cut it open, and then you still have the issue of sourcing safe/official parts, the quest is meant to be disposable. I like the idea of external computing and external power because it means less waste, actual upgrade paths, and potentially the ability to tinker with the hardware, so you can create your own upgrades from community projects like eyetrackvr, or project babble

@tek535818 күн бұрын
@bravohomie honestly, that would work; Also, if that's the setup, would make sense to offload the battery too and get as much weight as possible off the head, and it could be a simple fiber data line, combined with power running through the same cable

My sideloads and mods list also behaves funny since last update, it gets replaced by the 'Warning Message' and says there's nothing there anymore, but if I just return and refresh the list, it comes back again. This seems extremely deliberate misdirection on Metas part, like they're trying to see if they can get away with blocking 'unofficial sources' without backlash. They would be very wrong.

Could they develop compute pucks as external upgrades to make headsets more powerful?
@aurastrike18 күн бұрын

@unfinishedsente18 күн бұрын
If the headset is basically an external monitor and everything else is handled by the puck, even the power (newer pucks could have different power requirements to the headsets? idk..), I don't see a problem with that.. Like, my TV works with Xbox and Playstation, Blueray, my computer and standard TV signals, obviously.. I'm just piling on to your point.. I also thought about phones getting a special VR version. Like Samsung Galaxy 30 (standard for most people), and Samsung Galaxy 30VR (for VR). So you could buy new phones instead of pucks. They'd be a bit more expensive, but have a XR2 chip or whatever instead of XR1 (again, an example), support for SD cards and a connection for external battery and the headset. Most phones nowadays are powerful enough to run Quest 2 games at least, especially if they'd have the XR2 chip. So in the future it should be even better. That way people would be more prone to upgrade their phones/pucks more often (and pay more because of the special VR features each time), because they'd feel like they'd get two birds with one stone. Also they could have their own Store on the phones. People sit with their phones like 6 hours each day, imagine all the impulse buys on games with the proper marketing and notification presets. edit: after thinking some more about it, using a phone as a puck could cause issues. Like if your kids want to play, but you need your phone for work. Or you get some steamy selfies from whoever while the kids are playing. Basically if someone other than you want to play, you're fudged. But it would be cool if it was the standard in the future, and everyone had their own VR phone with their own profiles and stuff, always handy. That way they could make it a standard to have VR glasses on flights and stuff like that, or cheap rental on VR-coffee-shops or bars in case you need to do some quick work. Or maybe the glasses would get mass-produced, and since they don't need "too many" components, they'd get cheap. Like really, REALLY cheap.

Meta Quest 3's camera opens up incredible possibilities for virtual peripherals! As a touch typist, current virtual keyboards are a major obstacle. Looking at the keys disrupts my flow and slows me down significantly. Imagine personalized, 3D-printed keyboard surfaces that perfectly match our hand size and typing style. This could even be adapted for one-handed users or those with disabilities, making VR more inclusive. Instead of just tapping a flat surface, we need tactile feedback that mimics real keys. Think haptic gloves with precise micro-vibrations for each keystroke, or even miniature actuators that provide realistic keypress resistance. A hybrid approach could combine subtle physical feedback with IR tracking. Imagine low-profile keys that gently rise when pressed, with embedded IR LEDs that create unique light patterns for each key, allowing the headset's camera to accurately register input. These concepts could be achieved with minimal hardware additions and a software update. I urge Meta to explore these possibilities and revolutionize input in VR!

Ergonomically, every gram added to a headset exponentially increases discomfort. The goal should be to design glasses that anyone can wear for 4+ hours without experiencing ear, nose, or temple pressure fatigue. To achieve this, there shouldn’t be a battery in the glasses. Instead, everything, including the display and camera drivers, should be tethered, with the frame made from magnesium or titanium alloys for durability and lightweight comfort. There’s already extensive user research available on head-mounted displays, but it feels like companies are ignoring it in their rush to capitalize on the market. These devices aren’t phones; consumer comfort is critical. When factoring in comfort, you can almost predict the specs required for even 10-20% adoption among enthusiasts. Prioritizing ergonomics over specs is key to long-term success.

I don't need wireless! I just need it wired so I MYSELF can decide where the weight should go. Do I want to tape it to my headset and distribute the weight like Meta does now? Do I want to attach it to my belt? Use a backpack? A frickin' bandoiler? Maybe I'm sitting in my couch and just want to keep it beside me. LET ME DECIDE! I can't use my Quest 3 for more than an hour before my neck and face hurts because of the weight. I've tried multiple 3rd party headstraps and they help, but not much. I just find myself not playing because it's uncomfortable. If I had a wired puck, I could attach another battery too it for double play time, and put it in a small backpack or my pockets. The puck in one and a battery in the other. If I end up buying a haptic feedback vest I could attack it to the vest somehow.. There'd probably even be some 3rd party accessories for the puck on eBay or whatever, or 3D print templates for different attachment styles. Like just let the people decide for themselves! A frickin USB-C connection and you can reduce the weight by 50% probably. Steamdeck with XReal glasses is supposedly awesome. No one bitches about the wire there..

Wired compute pucks are the best way I think. Take as much of the weight and heat off of the head as you can, and move it to a wired device. The compute puck could then be worn like a backpack, side bag, fanny pack, clipped on a belt, or set aside if sitting. More power could be attained from the same hardware by having stronger cooling components. There would be less need for miniaturization, which could either reduce costs or increase power, and batteries could be larger. External power sources could also be used.

bluh, ngl i wish when companies rolled out ui changes that amount to just moving where something is located, especially if that thing being in it's current location has been a part of design for decades, they'd just give you the option to.... not? i do not want my that crap on the bottom as a separate bar, i think it looks just awful. the only person i could see this being good for are people who have, like, wrist mobility issues to where getting your curser up there would be a problem. would be a lot easier to embrace new technology if it didn't also keep doing the digital equivalent of deciding doorknobs were obsolete and so started putting them in the center of the door and requiring you to stick your finger in at an angle and twist, as if that somehow isn't more obnoxious then just turning a doorknob. sometimes things have been a part of os design language not because no one has challenged it, but because there was simply nothing to improve on that could easily prove to be a benefit rather than an annoyance. and sometimes something new isn't innovative- it's just dumb. also, putting it there breaks up the flow of the start bar (idc what meta's word for it is) and the window above it, and again simply just looks ugly there. if this were a living room i'd be judging the person who planned the layout of the furniture

Wired compute/battery puck for headsets? Yes. Not only feasible but they could save you throwing out a whole headset every generation if the only thing that is ready for an upgrade is the silicon, not the panels and lenses. But lets be real what will happen with glasses: Phones will become the wireless compute puck, glasses will be the peripheral display and interface. Because a puck won't offer anything phones don't.

@@WindFireAllThatKindOfThing meanwhile those of us who value performance and think it's annoying to run 2 virtual environments at the same time ( Oculus dash and steam vr) but still want their headsets because the hardware is good for the price, just use oculus killer anyway, Virtual desktop, or steam link, to run only steam VR and cut meta out of the equation. What they need to do is hire the folks who made Oculus Killer, and Virtual desktop, and let those people run and manage the department that works on link. Allow them to make the cabled and wireless experiences for pcvr, and just have a good overall headset rather than neglecting the wider portion of their user base.
