I liked the Rotting Christ album, but i do agree that they focus more on epic atmosphere, rather than Riffs these days...Swallow The Sun i quite enjoyed, tho i get why some wouldnt dig it as much...My most disappointing was the new Maul release. It wasnt bad per se, but was a big step down from Seraphic Punishment imo!

Completely agree on Maul. Seraphic Punishment was incredible and a regular rotation for me. The new album was a bit boring in comparison, nothing really memorable. I’ll still jam it time to time but I had high expectations for it.

Its weird. This is the one year where there really wasn't any disappointing albums for me. The only thing I can think of was Integrity's newest album at the beginning of the year, otherwise everything else was stuff that I was going into without any expectations

Swallow The Sun's new album took some time for me to enjoy. The production was different, but after a couple spins it grew on me.

Same. It’s more catchy and accessible. To most metalheads that’s a no no. But the songwriting it’s fantastic and I enjoy his singing so 🤷🏻‍♂️

I am pretty disappointed with the new Jinjer material. tbh they said it wold be different but every single they ave released would fit right in the middle of Wallflowers. Too much of that same vibe. Still decent but not great. i don't se this album ranking very high but we gotta hear the full thing first i guess.

Unto Others was the big one for me. Obvious big drop from the first two. Swallow the Sun too but they had a great run so it was bound to happen.

Unto Others was good, they just needed to edit it down to a crisp 35 mins album.

@@raygundesigns It's not a bad album. I just didn't think it was as strong as the others and it's also way more upbeat/punkish. (Mama Likes the Door Closed, Suicide Today, Sunshine) Not my thing. Didn't really have the dark/moody touch they had on the first two which I liked.

I was that way on the first couple listens, but it's actually gone on to be one of my favorites this year. Lots of cool stuff going on, can't wait to see them live.

I agree with you on Darkthrone. I thought it was very lethargic and tedious to listen to. But at the same time, they have over 20 albums… And there’s just gonna be a dud somewhere in that discography at this point in their career. It was inevitable to happen.

Fleshgod Apocalypse-Opera. Maybe I just love the other albums too much, but this one was a chore to get through. Songs aren't especially memorable and the clean female vocals do my head in

I liked the new DarkThrone quite a bit, but Rotting Christ and Swallow the Sun was admittedly both a snoozzzzzzzefest.. 😴😴 Actually Pallbearer's new album also made me fall asleep.. 🤔

I didn't like the new Swallow the Sun album either but the composer Juha Raivio told that the shift in style was to protect his mental health. He has always found it emotionally taxing to create so melancholic music. He said another Moonflowers style album would have made him kill himself

that's strange. STS has always been pretty melancholic. Maybe he's going through some serious stuff and can't use it as an outlet to manage it. You think if it affects him that much he would be in a different style of music. Or at least a different sub-genre anyway.

@Hellenicheavymetal Well, his wife died in 2016 and he expressed his grief in his music on the 2019 and 2022 StS albums and on the 2017 Hallatar album. And you can really hear the pain and suffering on those albums. He said it was truly painful to create those albums. Now he just wants to recover

I actually liked the new Rotting Christ but yeh, I find it a bit too mid-paced. But then again, they have other mid-paced albums and they are masterpieces, so maybe that's not why. Anyway, I like it but it could have been better.

At this point Rotting Christ is like the AC/DC of Black Metal, both bands make the same simple and catchy songs

I didn't know Dark Throne put out an album this year. I liked the previous two so I'll at least give it a spin. I only listened to the new Rotting Christ once. I agree, there was too much chanting. Swallow the Sun's new album is different but it's not bad in my opinion. I understand why you hate it but it's still a good album.

For the latest Darkthrone, I really tried to like or yet understand but, ....no way. It's not at all like real darkthrone to me. I am far away from frozen cold black metal like I Used to like about Darkthrone.

I am pretty new to Swallow The Sun so I don't have a great frame of reference, but I also did not care for Shining. It was very confusing to me after hearing their other stuff. I didn't think it was terrible or unlistenable, but I think I listened to it once and just didn't bother with another listen. It was like "Okay, that was indeed an album" and I moved on.

The new Ensiferum bored me to tears. I was excited to see where they'd go after the pretty awesome Thalassic. Turns out they went slow, long and boring

Can't argue anything on this list. STS album was an absolute drag to listen to, usually nowadays don't care much, but that album got me angry, it was so bad.

I feel like Darkspace works best on the albums with more songs that are shorter in length. I and III are pretty much the only ones I go back to regularly. Luckily Tobias put all his good ideas into the new Paysage from what I can tell. Biggest disappointment for me this year is in myself for not making enough of an effort to listen to the new Crypt Sermon. Just haven't found myself in the mood for that specific style, but I'm sure it's a good album.

Rotting Christ new album i like but there was alot of riffs i was already familiar with that were on the Sakis Tolis solo album a few years ago. The solo album was album of the year for me whenever that came out. Its too bad i cant find a physical copy of it. I have everything else from Sakis including the grindcore stuff early on with Rotting Christ. I am missing the last Thou Art Lord album but have everything else.

Darkthrones record is terrible I pretty much only listen to the early albums. You can pretty much guess that anything they do now is just not going to be any good, at all. That Rotting Christ record is fuckin' rubbish! They should be embarrassed

Metal Gods by Dream Evil was my most disappointing album of 2024. All of the singles prior to the release was great but the album was just kinda boring. Wake Up the Wicked by Powerwolf is my second best album of the year

If I picked the most disappointing albums of the year it has to be the new Dust Bolt album they really went less thrash metal then the new Linkin Park album From Zero it was just mid and boring and finally Swallow The Sun which I agree it was terrible.

Accept - Humanoid. Their worst album of the post-Udo era. This album has 4-5 pretty good tracks that could round out an EP. But there's utter rubbish like "Man Up" and "Straight Up Jack" which sound like AI-generated AC/DC songs. The title track and direction of the album had promise to be a modern take on Metal Heart but they didn't even come close.
