There are two methods to determine octane ratings: Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON). RON always gives higher number than MON so in North America we take an average of the two. You will see on gas pumps octane number defined as (R+M)/2. A 87 octane rating by (R+M)/2 method is the same as 91 (RON) research. So when KIA mentions 91 RON it is same as 87 regular.

If it's "premium recommended" or "87 or higher" that probably means that the engine is tuned (higher combustion pressures) for the higher octane and is relying on the anti-knock to run at 87. There's power on the spec sheet and there's what's actually going on in real world driving, like the ECU pulling timing etc etc. For the most part, everyday commute we don't worry about this as much as we used to.

There are actually 3 octane numbers: Research Octane, Motor Octane, and (R+M)/2. For regular fuel, research is typically 91, motor is 83, and (R+M)/2 is 87. The number on the pump at the gas station is (R+M)/2 which equals 87 although the research number in the calculation in 91. It can be confusing.

Boy, I hope VW in particular & German cars in general have gotten better over the last 25 years I gave up on German cars a long time ago I was shocked that our beloved Motormouths love & buy German cars But I understand your tactics. Just like another car KZbinr who loves Minis; you lease til the warranty is up then turn the car in. I’ve never leased a vehicle in my 56 years of driving I’m one of those guys that keeps vehicles til the engine drops in the road. Both the 2007 Honda Fit & 2011 Tacoma in my drive way are still going strong It was my girlfriends 1999 Beatle that soured me Plastic window crank broke in my hand. The back side of Plastic splash guard dropped, luckily I carried the 12lb Victorinox to remove it Those stand out in my mind On the other hand it drove like a sports car on North Carolina mountain roads Except for a 1971 Beetle I bought new, most of my vehicles have been Toyotas & Hondas. Thanks for addressing the MHEV issue and demystifying it for folks. The newer LR Defenders (with the P400 MHEV) use the mild hybrid to run an ‘electronic supercharger’ which is essentially only there to offset the turbo-lag on the 6 cylinder engine, yet they are still sometimes referred to as ‘electric vehicles’ in the advertising. It would be better for consumers if there was an easily accessible and trustworthy standard for understanding the differences between MHEV, vs Hybrid, vs PHEV, vs BEV’s, so folks could inoculate them selves against misinformation when shopping for newer vehicles with these technologies.

I'm going to pick up one of those Durangos and turn it into a work truck, rip out the rear seats if they don't fold completely flat. I'll get rid of the aluminum wheels and put steel with larger sidewall tires because I do a lot of driving on rough roads, have broken some aluminum rims. Add a trans cooler and metal roof rack for ladders and materials. This will do for a few years until I retire, maybe five years, depending on the economy. Then bolt a roots blower on it for kicks on my way to the early morning old man coffee meet-up.

usb-c and usb-a each have standards they were developed to. Usb-c ports can actually deliver more power than usb-A ports, which is why your device charges faster on a usb-c vs. a usb-a port. Unfortunately usb standards are a bit of a mess, but generally usb-c ports have higher power ratings than usb-A.

Regarding the first question about fuel, listen to the engine under load (although you do need to know what to listen for). For example, driving in town, slight incline up a hill without the transmission "downshifting". The engine will be put under a decent amount of load. If you start to hear pinging, use a better fuel. If you don't, you can use the regular gas. My previous car (2012 Kia Rio5) recommended regular unleaded, but would start to ping under load (sample scenario above). This causes the engine computer to retard to the timing to prevent any damage to the engine long term. I didn't want to risk any issues, but I also didn't like how it performed that way as it cuts power and reduces fuel economy when it does that. I put premium gas in it the whole time I owned it and it ran great the entire time. My current vehicles run fine on regular gas so we just use that.

They skipped over the Grand Highlander vs CX-90 but aside from the Toyota premium, the Grand Highlander probably has the true third row unlike a mother in law CX-90. Lexus does the space disappearing act as well but this is is what I like about Toyotas where they are generally very well proportioned for interior volume. I like Mazdas and generally recommend them but I hate how they proportion the volume with how the doors are set up which dig into my arms. Toyota doesn’t have that problem and neither does my Forester which is like a giant greenhouse.

When we bought it, I thought, They must have good quality to offer a four-year warranty - NOT TRUE. We kept it too long thinking things would improve and to stay with our car rotation plan. The only person sorry we got rid of it was our mechanic. I actually called him to say we sold it and he needed to revise his revenue projections. Too many plastic parts right next to the engine (2 dip stick replacements because they were plastic, and many more parts), 2 water pump replacements in under 75k miles (plastic impeller), no after market parts ($99 radiator hose). I know two others with similar experience. VW has great marketing, and horrible engineering/quality. Oh, and they cheat on emissions standard reporting. USB-C should charge significantly faster than USB-A so long as the device AND the USB-C cable supports it, and it’s USB-C at both ends (and when charging at home, your power adapter supports it too). It’s not very noticeable for most Apple devices however. Of course, if the car’s USB-C power delivery is low, then it won’t charge fast either. So much for standardization!
@rubinixcube8866
@rubinixcube8866 Ай бұрын
@tttdolph it’s a physical connector and also a standard. If properly equipped, USB-C can deliver up to 100watts of power, which can power most laptops. USB-A connectors and cables deliver significantly less power, even if one end is USB-C.

Even if you don't use premium gas, you should still only buy gas from "top tier" rated providers (regular or premium), otherwise you are just asking for a carbon-sludge clogged engine even faster than normal, most especially with the boom of pure GDI (direct-injection) engines that don't also include port-injection in the design. Also, turbo engines that don't use premium, regardless, are also asking for carbon-sludge buildup & problems down the road (plus you should change their oil every 3K miles in a turbo engine).

I don't know what the taxes are, in the province you are in, but I can tell you that in Ontario you have to add 13% to each purchase. For example when you said in one of your videos that the Toyota Corolla Cross was $ 30, 295. the full price in ON would be $ 34,233. That price would be a cash price. If you went the financing route, which Toyota has interest at 6.99% for 6 years, that car would end up costing you $ 42,000+. So you could end up paying $42,000 + . for a car that has an MSRP of $ 27,650. A car that you did not add one single accessory onto. It's the BASIC MODEL. My question is, since when did it become acceptable to believe that a SUBCOMPACT SUV like the Cross really has an MSRP of $27,650. ( as of April 12, 2024 and that the manufacturer isn't making up FAKE MSRP NUMBERS based on what they think the market will bear ?

If you use 93 octane your car will run better.. you will feel sportier.. 87 will get you there... Eventually.. 😅

Speaking of Turbo. I use to don’t like turbo because it’s waste of gas and it’s required more maintaining than non-turbo engine. Now I have hybrid with turbo because that’s only standard for my new vehicle. Great show Andrea.

What is a mild hybrid? It's a weak attempt by the auto manufacturers to meet mandates regarding at least SOME components of the vehicle help safe fuel. Simply put, it's when the engine shuts off while you're idling at a traffic light.

VW to me is synonymous with oil leak, black tailpipes. I will be thankful once there are more VW EV on the roads and won’t almost pass out from smelling the fumes in rush hour traffic. My guess is owners have no idea they are smoking out people behind them Mild hybrid to me means they don’t know how to properly do true hybrid like Toyota. I think Toyota is on their 5th gen while others are on 1st or 2nd. Each gen usually comes out every 5 years When I went to Taiwan, their octane gas starts at like 94 as their lowest. Why do we in North America get 87 as the lowest and dirtiest

Taiwan probably uses a different octane number standard. 5th gen hybrid in Toyota is just a marketing term. Even the Car Care Nut admitted it's just "4.5 gen". Nothing prevents other manufacturers learning from Toyota. Moreover, Toyota, Honda and Mazda use VERY different hybrid setups, so they are not even directly comparable.

@@solderbuff your prob correct about the different gas rating. Not sure why Mazda and Volvo do mild hybrid. Gas savings seems like would be negligible. Just gives boost upon rolling start. So Toyota is much better. More efficient, less lag, less noticeable transitions when compared to other companies. Others seem almost amateur in comparison

Premium fuel ⛽️ for Kia/ Hyundai.😮. I believe Lexus/ Acura doesn't need premium gas. Jack, probably probably Canadian dealers are more polite. We have real evils runs 😈 car dealerships in U.S. Only exception may be Subaru. Honda is the same. Toyota is not far off. 😢

What is a mild hybrid? I know. I know. It is a car that offers little in way of performance improvements for being a hybrid but at the same time it ties a huge repair bill to it at some point in the future forcing people to buy new instead of used. It will also usher in the decline of civilized society as people will do anything to feed their families. Morals do not apply when your kids are starving. So to take those morals away corporations want you starving and that is probably what is going to happen. Trump is not smart enough to fix it and those that are... won't.
