14:40 My 2019 Kia Niro SX Touring Hybrid doesn't even have a 12V battery. It uses a section of the drive battery. One winter it was around -40 overnight and the car didn't want to start. There is a button to press on the dash that instantly self recharges the engine starter section using the rest of the battery, and then it started. The car has been very reliable and efficient. My wife and I use it as the primary car, and my 2019 Sorento V6 is the secondary vehicle and I use it for towing sometimes.

13:17 just to add (using new Toyota hybrid as an example), the only two extra service required are coolant for the hybrid inverter, and filters for the hybrid battery. Other than that, The fluid for both front and rear transaxle are just drain and fill, similar to transfer case and rear diff.

I love distinctive car colors. I feel safer driving them since they're more noticeable on the road. My favorite color I've owned so far is Kiwi Green on my 2014 Mirage hatchback. Such a fun color. Regarding the RVR/Outlander Sport, we have had two in the family since new. A 2015 GT 2.4 and a 2019 ES 2.0. No, they're not fancy, but we find them comfortable, have good handling, an elevated driving position, and they've been nothing less than bulletproof. The 10yr/100k mile warranty is extra peace of mind. Fuel economy is decent for a 3,300 lbs. vehicle with among the highest ground clearance in the segment. The 2.4L routinely gets 27mpg in the city and 31mpg on the highway. The only complaint I have is the narrow rear doors. Adult feet don't fit well between the doorframe and seat cushion when getting in and out. Personally, I'd rather own a low-tech, reliable vehicle. I'll let other people buy the new designs packed full of unnecessary tech that costs 4-figures to repair. I'd rather take a vacation or pay off debt.

USA Today recently had an article singing the praises of the Mitsu Mirage being the lowest priced car in America! I had two Mitsu twins (Dodge Colt & Plymouth Colt Vista / Mitsu Expo LRV in the 1990s) Both were very economical & utilitarian. The Colt Vista was quite comfortable, fuel efficient, and I could tow 2,000 lb fishing boat over Cascade Mt passes with it (which may also explain why it needed a new tranny at 70,000 miles). A friend of mine has a 93 Mitsu Expo that has been trouble free; her other car is a Porsche Boxster

Just some clarification regarding the 12V battery in hybrids in Toyota's system. The 12V battery is only for running the vehicle's electronics. There is no starter motor, which is why the 12V battery is quite small and why they tell you not to "boost" another vehicle, since you'll likely damage that battery as it is too small to start a conventional car. The 12V battery is typically located in the rear of the vehicle as well, not under the hood, so it's not something quickly accessible. There also isn't direct battery connections allowing you to "boost" another vehicle. In the Toyota hybrid system, the main high voltage battery provides the power and MG1 (motor generator 1) starts the gas engine. MG1 also charges the high voltage battery. MG2 is what actually drives the wheels when needed (and MG3 for AWD models). There is also a voltage regulator that charges the 12V battery from the main hybrid system. The 12V in the Toyota hybrid vehicles is actually quite small. The reason is it doesn't have a lot of amps capability (which is why it could get damaged if you try to start a conventional vehicle with it). The starter motor draws a LOT of current, which is why the 12V batteries in regular cars are quite a bit larger, heavier and expensive. Since the Toyota hybrid system doesn't have a starter motor, it doesn't need such a robust 12V battery.

Thanks for the excellent information. My 1st & 2nd gen Prius had a very small battery in the trunk, rear-hatch area. However in regards to being inexpensive, despite the small, tiny design, the batteries were around 200 dollars for a replacement that is just for parts, if you could find a replacement as not many of the 1st gen Prius were made, and the battery is more like a motorcycle battery in size. The battery on my 1st gen Prius also had a rubber vent tube for safety as accumulating hydrogen gases can be explosive in a confined area such as the trunk. Jumping an accessory 12 volt battery is also a bad idea as the inverter that is used to convert the high voltage hybrid battery's current to the lower voltage of the accessory battery is very fragile and can be fried when jumping another car.

As with the 12V battery issue - My 12V battery died on the NX phev a few times and the dealership replaced it with a bigger battery and I have connected a battery monitor with the 12V battery and noticed at when driving the car does a nominal charge at 12.7-12.8Vs which is extremely slow. With the tech and mobile app pulling the 12V battery while the car is off, it drains the 12V battery much faster than normal. I have learnt to idle my phev if I drive short distances for 15 mins so that it will do a charge so that it can maintain a decent charge on the 12V battery.

I rented an RVR (not my choice) for a weekend in October. Although the horn made a 'bow wow' sound, it really wasn't a dog (the RVR, not the horn). The interior was small, but the vehicle was solid and well-built. I did, however, feel embarrassed in the big box parking lots when I had to (gasp!) manually open and close the rear hatch.

11:50: Regarding CVTs. The optimum set-up uses a normal transmission IMO. My Volvo, with an eight speed trans, has the electric motor in the rear axle. This provides all wheel drive without the complexity and frictional losses of a driveshaft. It also frees up the driveshaft tunnel to store the battery in a protected cavity. Regarding CVTs vs eCVTs . . . A continuously variable transmission is a continuously variable transmission (yes, the Toyota planetary gearset design is vastly superior to the belt and pulley).

Where I come from, a large high altitude valley in Colorado, we have only one car wash for a 20,000 sq. Kilometer area. Snow and subzero weather can be expected between the end of August to the beginning of June. We have a long standing tradition of washing our cars once a year whether they needed or not. Silver or gold metallic paint works best in that miserable climate but we all joke the dirt helps protect the paint from the sun.

I heard from another KZbinr car reviewer that (supposedly) cars that have exclusive colors that's only offered on certain trims will hold their value better. Like the baby blue color that BMW had only on the M3 back in the early 2000s. So, that car today would be valued higher than another M3 of the same condition but black or grey etc etc. (🤷)

@andreaspencer9813 Hi I found it interesting you mentioned hyundai 12v battery. I actually have a 2021 hyundai sonatat hybrid and recently discovered the reason why hyundai and kia hybrid cars have this 12 v battery reset button is because these cars dont have a physical 12v battery anywhere within the car. Rather the manual says the drive train battery has been partitioned similar to a how a hard drive can be partitioned for a computer. So the 12v battery is integrated with the drivetrain battery under the seats. Therefore any parasitic draw from the car would cut the battery off to prevent further degradation and a complete loss to the battery. Though these cars do have terminals in the engine bay such as to jumpstart someone elses car if needed. Apparently 12v battery never needs to be replaced. Thats a pro and a con. If 12v battery partition is fried up, that would mean the entire drive train battery needs replacing. Though the pro is this car will never leave you stranded such as if you accidentally left lights on overnight since system will cut off battery to prevent total loss

Zak, in a hybrid/PHEV the 12V battery usually runs the accessories only. It's needed to turn on the computer and connect to drive battery but rather than a starter it will have a motor/generator which is just a beefier motor designed for continuous use rather than high output cranking which is usually driven by the drive battery (since it's output voltage is easiest to use as the generator when the engine isn't driving the wheels if the voltage is the drive battery voltage). My hyundai Ioniq PHEV also has a DC-DC voltage converter which is why the accessory battery meters high when you turn the vehicle on even though the engine isn't running. It also has the battery saver system which is supposed to detect a low voltage 12V battery and then connect the DC-DC system to charge the 12V battery but that doesn't seem to work as the vehicle has left me stranded 8 times aince I got it, 7 of them due to 12V battery issues. Yes, the 12V battery is very much smaller, and no it is not rated to crank an engine (which is why you shouldn't use hybrids to boost other vehicles). What I can do, however, is if the car needs to charge I can justvleave it turned on while charging the drive battery, which keeps the DC-DC converter on so it will keep the 12V system topped up. I started doing that every once in a while and my 12V issues went away. I also purchased a little solar panel that I leave on my cargo cover which trickle charges the 12V battery so that if I don't use it much for a few days it will stay topped off since it has to report in all yhe spy data so that hyundai knows what I eat for supper and those types of things. If a hybrid didn't have the DC-DC system then you'd be draining your 12V battery every time the engine cycles off and they'd be dying all over the place.

Also, not having a starter is what makes hybrid/PHEV vehicle the best for anyone who does delivery as a job/side hussle. Since you are turning your car on and off every 10 minutes or so a common problem is burning out starters... Not possible if you don't have one.

I think Zak is correct about lighter weight 12v batteries. That is a problem with 2015- 2023 Subaru Outbacks & Kia Niro PHEVs. For both those cars, typical life about 3 yrs give or take a year depending on the car's usage. How do I know? I have owned both vehicles & am active on owner's forums for those models. It is a minor, but sometimes very inconvenient problem but both Kia & Subaru will usually replace the battery under warranty within the 1st 3 years. Subaru recently upgraded their OEM batteries (2023 I believe). Otherwise, both cars are generally quite solid.

On my Canadian 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid Touring model, the under hood 12V battery, DOES NOT start the ICE. The high voltage battery pack is the battery that is enabled to start the engine. You are quite correct though, that the 12V battery is a smaller capacity battery that only operates, the lights, accessories, infotainment system, and BCM modules and computers. All other power requirements are dealt with by the HV battery and the inverter. I use one of the Honda sold Optimate Battery Tenders when I am not going to be driving my vehicle for several days (that does not happen very often) and it is hard wired to the 12V battery terminals, with a long polarized connection plug, making it very easy to plug in without doing it the wrong way. I used the item on my previous 13 year old Civic and like you, found that the original battery lasted over 10 years. For $70 Cdn dollars, it was a good purchase.

Some of the parasitic draws on modern vehicles come from being constantly connected by things like the Ford Pass system. This is supposed to keep things up to date - in my 2019 F150 Lariat, I had to get a trickle charger as the vehicle was always garaged and couldn't find the signal so was always trying to connect without success. My Tesla was always looking for the updates too while sitting in the other garage, but at least it was always plugged in anyway. One thing that hybrid systems often need that is forgotten is servicing the battery cooling system if the cars have liquid cooling (Nissan Leaf's batteries were not liquid cooled and look where that got them). On the Volt I had, a complete change of the coolant for the engine and the separate battery cooling system was recommended every five years (I did it twice over the 11 years I owned the car). Keeping these batteries in their happy place is the secret to long life and the cooling system is critical. My Volt system never allowed more than an 80 per cent charge or less than a 30 per cent charge. The main batteries had liquid cooling and the car was delivering the same electric range as when new after 11 years. The 12V battery was original and this car was an Ontario vehicle - maybe this was just dumb luck though. I'm still waiting for the Prius Prime I ordered in October 23 - month 14 now. I should never have sold the Volt.

A car in the least reliable group will - on average - have LESS THAN ONE additional reliability issue than a car in the most reliable group, in the third year of ownership. On this anthill is built the tower of “ultra important, sink or swim” reliability ratings.

Love our RVR, have one since 2017, and regular maintenance, and no issues. Its basic, and for some, thats what a lot of people want. Wife drives it daily

On mine, there is a cooling system for the rear axle electric motor. The reservoir is in the engine compartment. Als9, there is a reduction gear.

Anyone wondering about resale I use to sell cars so I can speak on the colour effecting resale. It can in certain situations. If we are talking about a fancy German car and the colour is very strange yes it can take a massive hit. For a RV4 or anything common no it doesn’t effect the resale at all. Unless the colour is crazy. One year Ford had this Orange and on the ST it worked but not on an Escape. Something like that may lower it. But blue or red will not.

I remember reading a while back that Mazda’s Skyactive motors promised great gas mileage. But I see unexceptional fuel economy ratings in reality.

With people keeping their vehicles for 10+ years, buy the colour you love. Who cares about resale value. We bought the Venza in blueprint blue and it is beautiful. Now, if only we could have got a tan interior.

Toyota's have head gasket issues on the Prius engines as they approach 150-200K. They keep revising this system and although better, they continue to be a problem. Other than that specific model we haven't noticed them having any issues with the ones that come through our shop.

I wish car makers would sell cars in a maroon exterior w/ a charcoal gray interior … so pretty … red is too much … also, I think a warm cocoa colored interior would be a hit 🤎 on a white car

That first question makes no sense, and he ruined her from having a great color. and zack is right, it's self fulfilling. The better-looking colors sell better if selling yourself. Not talking flashy oranve or lime green, but something like green, blue, or lunar rock. Why? Because they are harder to get. I myself pay more for the color I like. Black/grey/white are everywhere and cheap.

I will probably get some blow back for this comment, but here it goes. Yes, the Tucson and Sportage may seem like a good value and great bang for your buck. However, those Hyundai vehicles just do not last. Last Spring I spent a fair amount of time in junkyards looking for a pickup box for an old truck that my kid and I are bringing back to life. Guess what brand was well represented in those junkyards? I will point out, most of them were not there because they were in a wreck. No, they seemed perfectly fine and rather new. You may pay more for a Lexus up front, but it's a Toyota underneath.

I bought a 2007 Hyundai Entourage minivan new and traded it in when I got my Forester in 2015. Had 310,000 plus miles and still ran like a champ when I traded it in. Just did regular maintenance and replaced the headlight bulbs twice. I'm on my 2nd Forester and loving them.

Grays are terrible. They don't INSPIRE, and more importantly, they disappear when it is gloomy easier than any other color. That may be handy when you're running from the cops, but you're more likely to hit by somebody else.
