Thanks Theo. Have to say enjoying smd more than I expected.

Talking and heating at same time at 23:57 made this capacitor pop up and explode like a Jiffy Pop popcorn pan. They were fun to use at campfires back in the day. Angled nozzles are handy for the microscope work. Before these soldering hot air stations you could go outside on a sunny day a with a magnifying glass and really go to town on removing SMD chips! LOL Good demostration of hot air reworking.

Oh be nice to have a sunny day never stops raining here! I have done a little bit of SMD work many years ago when I worked in production but it’s a long time ago. I need a bit more practice but really did enjoy it.

Well performed and comprehensive review. Loved the exploding cap!

Yes the capacitor was funny. Hot air does look like an easy quick way to remove the capacitors

Great review, now I want one. My budget 866D works but is cheap and the fan is dying in mine. You forgot to mention how quickly they will burn your house down if the nozzle gets knocked off the stand accidentally. I suggest never leave it powered up unattended
@allthegearnoidea67522 жыл бұрын
Yes your right. But the stand is heavy so won’t fall out without help. I still think the auto cool down in the cradle. Perhaps the software could have a sleep mode if not removed from the stand in 20minutes

You definitely do want one I was really impressed

Funny, I just did a video on soldering gear which gets published tomorrow. The Quick is excellent, I’m very happy with mine. I use the angled tips as it’s just easier to not have to hold your arm in the air, I did a review on it a few years ago.

Light and informative!👍Those El-caps require awkward back and forth U-turns so it makes me wonder if either fixed or adjustable Y nozzles exist.. or maybe a semi circular tweezer adaptation to deflect air away from the can?
@allthegearnoidea67522 жыл бұрын
To be honest it was my fault that it exploded. Trying to talk and use the microscope I let the heat linger on the capacitor body. None of the others exploded so I think it probably just takes practice. A special nozzle would be handy

good to see you have more gear with no idea now :-) nice video those "quick" hot air seem to have good reviews, so a lucky item if the price is right ;-)

Yes, I've had the odd surface mount electrolytic whizz past my ear. Can't bring myself to use the Mr. Carlson method though.

No I have never tried twisting them off. I normally use two soldering irons to heat both sides

That’s a very nice hot air station Chris. The presets look useful. Can they be altered or is it factory settings only? The nozzle attachment looks far superior and more robust than mine. I soon learnt that an angled nozzle was needed and that stays in mine permanently now. You certainly did get a nice stash of quality kit. Cheers Graham
@allthegearnoidea67522 жыл бұрын
You can set the presets to whatever you want. Yes I got lucky with this lot. Thanks regards Chris

Well that works excellent :-D You seemed to be having fun desoldering the components, i knew you liked it :-D Maybe you will do more smd work now you have the ideal tool. I thought about one years ago, but i hardly touched smd parts so i didn't bother. No im not a tight assed person, not Floppy bum eather :-D Smashing video chris, thank you.

Yes now I have better equipment I would definitely be more confident trying SMD in the fire. I can see in some ways it is easier than through hole
@michaeldranfield71402 жыл бұрын
You should pre heat the board first the caps come off quicker then without exploding
@allthegearnoidea67522 жыл бұрын
Do you mean preheat with hot air or using a preheated or hot plate. I think it only exploded because I directed heat on the can accidentally the others did explode
@michaeldranfield71402 жыл бұрын
Pre heat the board to 100 degrees c on your hot plate first, but if you want a real challenge try removing a flat pack chip from a SRBP board instead of a fiberglass pcb.!

US Subscriber, I focused in on your UK energy monitor, I've been looking for a way to evaluate 240V 20/30amp window air-conditioners in US. Thinking of adapting a product made for the UK / European market. Any recommendations?
@allthegearnoidea67522 жыл бұрын
You can buy energy monitor volts and amps power meters from China these work with a separate current transformer so will work to 30 amps. The plug monitors will only do 13 Amp
