Thank you, Steve. Excellent instructional video - the best I've seen on the Red Phillips knot. It wasn't clear in the other videos I watched that the tag of braid needs to wrap around all THREE lines when tying the Uni knot part (leader, leader tag and braid tag). As someone who has been tying an FG, I am amazed at the simplicity of this knot. Now I need to test it, but everything I've seen says it will hold up fine. You have a new subscriber!

I'm glad it helped! I have been very impressed with it so far. Yes, wrapping it around all three is definitely key. Thank you so much for watching.

@Steve Rodgers Hey Steve, follow up question. At the end of the knot process when you are cinching down the half hitch to meet up with the Uni knot, are you pulling on the main braid and the main leader to move the half hitch to the Uni?

I've used this knot for about 10 years now fishing in the Gulf and in shore in the Pensacola area. The only problem I ever had with it was with very smooth main lines such as Nanofil or Gliss. My solution was to finish the knot with three or four half-hitch knots going in opposite directions. Then I only cut the tag end of the main line so that there is about a quarter-inch to a half-inch remaining. That solved the problem and the knot still zips right through the guides on both the cast and retrieve.
@SteveRogersOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing that with our viewers.
@jonathan1944Ай бұрын
Like you, I have been using the Albright knot and am excited to learn this one - much smaller! Felt like thew Albright would get beaten up on the guides after a short while. Do you lock the Red Philiips down with super glue at all?
@SteveRogersOutdoorsАй бұрын
I don’t lock it down at all with glue. The real key is to make sure the leader half hitch is above the braid before cinching it down. Good luck with it!

Love the simplicity and ease of making this knot. How does it compare in strength to the FG and Crazy Alberto knots ?
@SteveRogersOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issues with the Red Phillips. I know some anglers do prefer the FG but this one is so easy that is what I stick with.
@Skolmann3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveRogersOutdoors I like the FG & Crazy Alberto when I’m jigging or bottom fishing but not when I’m doing a lot of casting as I found that the knot going through the guides repeatedly during casting weakens it...I’ve had the knot come unraveled both when fighting a fish and also just on the retrieve. I’m going to give this knot a chance this week when I target bluefish
@waynesammyswingle61072 жыл бұрын
I am surprised I haven't seen that knot before. I can tie a FGknot but it is a real problem for me since both of my thumbs are a lot older than I would like them to be. Very hard for me to pinch when holding for the FG. I can't wait to give this one a try. Thanks
@SteveRogersOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
For me it is much easier and faster than the FG. I need something that I can tie without my glasses. Lol.
@cgraz33833 жыл бұрын
Curious why you use this knot instead of a double Uni? I’ve used the Crazy Alberto and double Uni forever. Both are easy and super fast. I just recently forced myself to learn the FG. Once you get the hang of it it’s actually fun to tie! But if I need a quick knot in a pinch, it seemed to me the double Uni is the go to. I’m guessing you like the knot strength on the Red Phillips. Would love to hear your thoughts on the recommendation of this knot. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!!!

I have many questions. What pound test braid are you casting with? Does the braid pound test vary with rod actions, rod length and technique ( crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, texas rigs). How long is the leader? Do you prefer a colored braid or camouflage braid? Does your braided line ever “dig in” to the spooled line and cause erratic casts and jerks during casting? I can see the advantages of quick flexibility and adaptability of the braid-leader combo, but wonder does this combo brings forth new problems. Some of the worst backlashes I have ever experienced, was when using braid directly connected to a swim jig or frog Thanks.
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Many great questions. On my baitcast equipment I normally spool up 50lb braid in green. On my spinning gear I use 20lb braid in hi-vis yellow. I use the hi-vis with the spinning gear since most often those are slower finesse presentations and I like to see the line better. Most of the time the 50 is what I stick with on the casting gear. If frog fishing in real heavy slop I may go up a bit, but most of the time 50 works for me. For crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits I use straight fluoro. My leader length I start with is about the length of the rod. This gives me a little room to make a few reties. Once in a while it will dig in, but usually that is right after I was stuck on something and really applying a lot of pressure on the line trying to get unstuck - normal cast-to-cast performance it doesn't dig in. As far as backlashes, the most important part is to make sure that connecting knot is tight and small - especially if using a rod with micro guides. All great questions!
@chilson.fillips Жыл бұрын
@SteveRogersOutdoors love the channel! New subscriber! Do you find this quicker, easier, and (most importantly) smaller than the uni to uni knot? It's my go to leader knot due to being quick, easy, and incredibly strong. I do wish it was just a tad smaller.
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I’ve been using it for a few years now and it has served me well. As long as I wrap carefully and make sure the line doesn’t pile up on itself it can get pretty tight and small. Not sure if I would say smaller than what you are currently using. Thanks so much for watching!
