This video incorrectly ties this GT knot - it also won the contest ONLY for higher rated lines - In the end Joe D is correct - the bobbin knot is best and improved FG is second - the correct GT knot used in the contest involves a bimini twist with the figure 8 in a much more complicated series of intertwined loops. Check out Salt Strong for the best info on knots.

I ordered this to net the algae in a large pond in our backyard. kzbin.infoUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI The net is very sturdy and easy to maneuver in the water. The angled edges make it easier to get into the smaller spaces among the rocks. I didn't realize that the front of the net doesn't actually have a frame to it, just the sides do, but it seems to work just fine. The handle extends to various sizes, which is a great feature when I'm in areas that are tight with shrubs at the edges of the pond. I can collapse the handle so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes.

I use the FG exclusively with casting and use this knot with spinning. Works great
@DTtunacharters3 ай бұрын
Bang on. And because the FG goes through the guides easily it doesn’t catch on the guides with every cast like the double uni or any knot with a tag end facing forward which acts like a barb on a hook, catching each guide on the way out. Each time it catches it causes a jerk. Over time this weakens the line until one time you break your lure off at the knot on your cast. We used to have to re-tie our connection knots every day when fishing tournaments just to be sure. This issue doesn’t happen with the FG.
@koogle612Ай бұрын
Different application. I use the fg all the time - hands down best but if casting for lg fish or trolling for same & I need a bite ldr or the stretch of mono Id use the gt over a surgeons knot.

@@kylezeller3488 I tie a San Diego jam knot in the mainline part, it’s a stronger knot than the uni knot. I tie the leader end first using the uni knot and then the San Diego jam knot in the lighter line. Have caught many tarpon well over 100 lbs from the shore using this knot. Fast and easy to tie and works with mono to mono, mono to braid, even braid to braid, works with light or heavy line. No way am I going to ever try one of these new fancy knots, seems like they take way too long to tie. None of them are 100% strength anyways. I’d rather use a knot that is strong enough, will never slip, and can be tied in the dark with no light spooking fish, wet or sweaty hands, pouring down rain, noseeums and mosquitoes driving you nuts, and other conditions fishermen may come across. I’ve tried the Alberto knot also. Seems to work very well only problem is that I fish mono so it is more of a pain to get it to tighten down right than the slicker braid lines it was made for.

I’ll have to give this knot a try. I have been using the FG knot for the past couple of years for my inshore setups. Prior to the FG, I was primarily using a double uni knot. I like the FG knot because of the small profile, and it goes through rod guides much easier. It took a while to learn to tie the FG, but once I became proficient with it, it became much easier to tie. I haven’t experienced any issues with the strength of the FG. This knot may be a good replacement for the double uni for my surf and offshore setups, since I still use double uni with heavier braid and mono lines. Great job on the video. A lot of knot tying videos are difficult to see in detail but this was very clear and easy to follow.

Davidn93 I had that happen to me at first. Usually happened when I didn’t keep enough tension as I did the wraps. Make sure that after you make the wraps that you do a few simple overhand knots with the braid and cinch each one down against the wraps. Then grab the leader and the braid and tighten. I've used the FG Knot for years. Typically 65lbs braid to 50lbs mono for blues, stripers and pike and 50lbs braid to 20lbs mono most lures (except fast moving lures like frogs and buzz baits or heavy cover were I use straight braid). I've never had a FG Knot fail me. It's smooth going through the guides and tied properly is very durable. The GT Knot may be stronger, but the FG Knots diameter makes it my choice for my braid to mono/floro leader knot.

Go to the actual source and look at the knot diagram. The knot in the video isn't remotely close to the knot that won the competition. The GT knot that won the competition starts with a bimini twist in the braid which isn't easy to tie. Then there's several additional steps once you get the figure 8. Basically this knot isn't very good as shown.

Context is everything, and in the interest of context it’s important to know that Sport Fishing Magazine had two categories: one for light line and one for heavy line. In the light line category, the Bobbin Knot came out on top, followed but an improved FG Knot and a regular FG knot. The GT Knot only won in the heavy line category. It’s also really important to know that this was a *reader knot challenge*, where actual knots submitted by readers were tested *once*. That’s hardly scientific because each knot test is a one-off instead of a repeat test that averages the results. I appreciate this video because it’s well done and expanding everybody’s horizons. I feel that the context above is very important, especially if you’re a bass fisherman ready to abandon your finely honed FG-tying skills (usually on lighter line) based on watching this video alone.

I would tie this knot when I didn’t know what I was doing. It would catch on eyelets, break on decent fish, work it’s way loose over the day. FG all the way. Super strong, neat and takes 40sec to tie
@FishGum5 жыл бұрын
Man you bring up a great point, the FG knot is the smoothest through the guides, and I need to learn to tie it faster. I’ve steered clear of he FG knot because it takes time to tie. If you can tie it in 40 seconds then with repetition maybe I can too!

@@FishGum There are many ways to tie an FG. Having tried a lot of them, I highly recommend this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2PYiH9qaM2ImNk for two reasons: 1. Once you train your fingers to behave that way, it's very fast to tie. 2. The technique works regardless of the stiffness of the leader. You can tie this with 4lb just as easily as 150lb.

This was a really good tutorial, by far one the best illustrations for knot tying! I think this will be my new short leader knot when I’m tournament fishing and need to re-tie due to abrasions. I currently use the FG knot with 40lb braid to 20lb invizx for 10-20’ leaders where the knot comes thru my guides and onto my reel. I’ve never broken the FG knot, even when snagged I always loose my jig or shaky head.

Looks like a great knot. I'll try it. I usually use a Palomar, trilene and a rapala knot. They all work great. I've rarely ever had a knot break in 60 years of fishing. Line usually breaks from a nick or fray

I don't have a need for a stronger knot, I've never had a issue with a line to line knot failing and I've used a few. I think the need is for the thinnest knot for level lines and micro guides.

Agreed!

Agree. Which line to line knot is the thinnest or lowest profile? Thanks
@joeshmoe77893 жыл бұрын
@@2musiclover534 The thinnest I use is the FG knot. No issues with strength and I've tested it with 150lb sharks that weren't targeted! But you should check it after every trip. I think some started to loosen on me at the tied off end after a few trips. I've been lucky, always found the issue at home when I'm putting on a fresh top shot, not on a trip. I'm experimenting with leaving the mono tag end about 1/16th" long and a tiny bit of super glue on that end of the braid. Just a bitty bit of glue at the end, don't want to effect the braid digging into the mono.

@@joeshmoe7789 Thank you for such as quick reply Joe. I'm going to learn the FG knot then...:) My primary rod has size 3 fuji guides, the tiniest guide by fuji so a slim knot is helpful. Thanks!

As already outlined below, this is a very similar knot and style to back-to-back/double uni. The only issue I have with this, same as the back-to-back uni which i use 100% of the time is if you have too big a distance between knots the braid can cut/bite into the mono knot as you bring the knots together. So i try and keep the distance as short as possible to stop that from happening. I will say i'm going to learn this knot and use it and see how it goes. I've never had an issue with back-to-back uni, it's simple easy and quick to tie. This GT knot is as well.

Improve your back to back uni by doubling the braid , otherwise tie the same

I think What most people dont understand about the fg is that it’s the best knot ,not the strongest ..The fg comes through the guides better allowing for pin point casts or skips with no interference..

You are correct!
@gerryhazelton95693 жыл бұрын
Why do you reel your line so far back anyway a typical leader is about what 15 -18 inches you shouldn’t be worried about the knot anyhow don’t you cast with at least a couple feet of slack ?

This is correct for heavier line weight however, for lower line weight as most inshore anglers use, this knot the GT was not in the top 26 or it was not tested per the IGFA.

its a nice test but they actually dont have the strongest form of FG on there, they all use the half hitch finish and if an FG fails its either because its not tied properly and the mono slips or it brakes at the hitches, they haven't tested an FG with a rizzuto finish, which is stronger then a FG with a half hitch finish. not saying its going to beat the GT knot for strength but its slimmer and casts better and is better then the standard FG knot
@AlexRuiz-vh9zg4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. 2 years ago I started adding Rizzuto finish to my FG’s and boy it is far superior vs 4-5 half hitches. Hasn’t failed on Goliath grouper, tarpon, amberjacks, etc. Plus I tend to use a longer leader and the knot in video is not designed to reel or cast through rod guides. So yes, use the knot in video if leader length is short enough that allows you to cast effectively...but not ideal when a long leader is needed.

I think the GT is known as the strongest. It has also been known to knock guide inserts out, which is why people use the FG. For people fishing saltwater it usually isn’t an issue, but for bass fishermen fishing with rods that have micro guides the GT causes problems.
