Quick and simple guide to remembering ship light combinations as per the IRPCS or COLREGS.
We present a simplified way of remembering the various lights that are shown by ships, boats and yachts to indicate to other vessels information about heading and vessel type.
A single red or green light will most likely be the sidelight - and in the simplest form this means that the vessel is underway and gives an indication of which side of the vessel you are looking at.
More red lights that you see, the more you should stay away
If in doubt, head for the dark parts of the horizon - if it I safe to do so!
Please watch our other videos to get more information and of course you are more than welcome to come and join one of our training courses. We also have online courses that enable you to gain more marine knowledge.

This is the closest thing I've seen so far to what I'm always banging on about in instructor networks.. actually giving the information to people in ways that help them REMEMBER!! While one could be hyper critical and say that the flashing yellow/orange light isn't only for hovercraft (oh ye of Solent only thinking, lol) it's for all non displacement (planing) fast craft etc etc, and while I loved the mnemonic with trawlinG at night being G over W, unfortunately the word FishinG also ends with a G so once a bit of time has passed, the student could forget which word it was.. however these are a great injection into our industry where so much of the teaching is mediocre and so many students can't remember anything because of it! Keep it up. RR

Thank you for your kind critique. I love the challenge of condensing hours of college lectures into a few minutes of "video notes". You could think of these videos as a AV version of "Munroe's Seamanship Primer" ! The additional challenge is that many of my students in the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka will be speaking "English" as a second language … so, thanks to student feedback (Shirly, Rex & Dinesh) I have learnt to speak "International English" … but that is another story :-) Please enjoy my videos and "share the love" if you find them useful :-)

I think of the red fishing light as a “red herring”, except… that totally goes against what the term “red herring” means!

In Virginia, a small vessel under oars may also display side lights.

By the way, in the United states a flashing yellow light usually means a vessel being pushed by tug in INLAND waters. Thanks for the videos again

You have a good point - fast flashing yellow and slow flashing yellow means different things in different parts of the world

Thank you for your kind words. How to take a huge amount of information and make it concise - always a challenge. To give as much information as possible, yet keep the time frame down so that it is manageable :-) Considerable time and effort goes in to making these videos and appreciation is appreciated :-) Thank you for commenting :-)

Coastal Safety I spent 30 years + squashing the redundant air out of verbiage. Not always an easy task when educating folk as it leaves one open to criticism of "oversimplifying".

@@brucemcnair8887 Exactly. This latest video was watched by over 1000 people in the first 24 hours. On Facebook we received so many comments and thank you's. I have been teaching this subject for many years to people who do not speak English as a first language - that is how I developed a method of speaking simply whilst still getting the message through and understood :-) Thank you for your support :-)
