The only problem I have with HDR is that I'm sick of seeing it. I was thumbing through a photography magazine the other day and it seemed like the only photos in it were black and white, or HDR. And I mean the surreal style HDR, not the kind Kai was demonstrating to fix exposure in different areas. I guess "normal" photos aren't artsy or "pro" enough.
@70mjc4 жыл бұрын
CoinGunnerTex because normal is conversation worthy. Some people whine just to make themselves sound knowledgeable or important. In this case, you fail at both
@Profile__14 жыл бұрын
@@70mjc I can't understand why you went after the original poster for just talking about his opinion. He didn't even try to imply that he was a superior photographer or that "extreme HDR" itself was bad, just that it was becoming a bit overdone. I never got the sense he was trying to sound "knowledgeable" or "important" at all like you seem to imply. Did you just word your sentence a bit off, or am I missing something? Genuine question, not trying to come across as confrontational.
@markedwards33 жыл бұрын
I think what people are really objecting to is bad HDR or just a poor result where the image has halo’s and weird colours that don’t suit the image not the technique of varying your exposure overa range to capture lost detail.

Here is the purpose of HDR. The eye can see a DR of 1mil:1. The DSLR can see only about 1,000:1. In order to get the entire DR of certain images (inside/outside for example), the HDR method is used. This was realized in 1850 by Gutave Le Gray who combined two exposures (land and sky) to get the entire DR of his seascapes. Longer exposures will not help. ND filters are only useful in certain landscape photos.

Don't take everyones criticism too seriously, they may want you to be more serious but if you're too serious then there is nothing that differentiates you from others. You're personality is what makes this channel so great, as long as you're enjoying yourself, the viewer will enjoy watching, and as long as you get the facts across, the people watching for facts will be happy. You do a great job, don't take what some say to heart. You're personality is what shines, not the information provided.

so true! usually this ignorance might concern mainly "non photographers", but sometimes even quite advanced or atleast moderate photographers can't grasp the amount some digital pictures consist of.

If you need to, you get an intervalometer. You take a series of pictures, load them into Lightroom, adjust them and make a video through the slideshow menu with some setups you get on the internet.
@Suiyoubimusic10 жыл бұрын
You can do most of the stuff with one single exposure in camera-raw anyways. (If you shot in RAW that is) Adjust some shadows and highlights in PS and bam! HDR is rarely useful, just as this video pointed out. But, if you take photos inside and want to capture what is going on on the outside of a window/door as well that's when it comes in handy. Urban exploration-photos usually looks better as HDR. I used to do some overly glowing HDR-stuff in the beginning of my photography, ugh! Less is more!

What the hell do you people complaining expect? DRTV offers a perfect mix of humour and photography. There are hundreds of review sites and videos blogs that offer a more serious tone; so go visit them! DRTV is for those who enjoy the lighthearted, less stuffy approach to photography. Not everyone cares for spec lists, charts and graphs, etc. Many of us simply enjoy making good photos - which is supposed to be fun. DRTV's approach is spot on and enjoyable. BTW, no one cares if you unsubscribe!

Bro why if I select RAW photo for hdr (high dynamic range) it is not active...if I select photo JPG hdr (high dynamic range) is active but can't be used the setting returns to OFF and the duration of the photo is 2x/second..camera nikon 5500
@viewyo12 жыл бұрын
As a lazy person, when I find an opportunity for HDR shot, I often use one RAW photo and process it into 3 different exposure JPGs, then merged them together into an HDR. I guess the advantage of doing it this way is being able to minimize the problem with fast moving subjects when taking multiple shots. I do believe the purpose of HDR is to reveal details of in high contrast scenes but from that on, it has kind of evolved into a type of photography one could easily indulged into.

do you have to just put the camera on the HDR setting or do you have to edit it into a HDR
@josheh412 жыл бұрын
The authors aren't fans of HDR, so what do you expect? It's more a joke towards the people that complained about the first video. Frankly I share their enthusiasm for HDR photography and the majority of slop that gets dumped out there in the name of HDR. While there's been examples of well done HDR, the majority of it always seems to me to be a vomit of ill-composed colors. Kai does a video on landscape photography that does well to show that HDR isn't needed if you understand photography
@BrandonGoodyear12 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify,most people don't hate HDR in itself, high dynamic range images can be really useful, it's when people tone map the image to get something that looks like as you put it "a vomit of colors"
@hynee12 жыл бұрын
People just go through a phase of doing HDR (usually in their first year of photography). I spent my phase doing panoramas. The problems which HDR is aimed at are better solved other ways, eg, grad tints, bracketing and combining in photoshop, or just letting things blow out. Also digital cameras now have excellent DR at low ISOs, HDR solves 2004's problems.

Also, the photos that Kai shared in the video on landscape photography are (in my humble opinion) a lot better than any HDR photography I've ever seen. That doesn't mean I haven't seen HDR photos I've liked. I had to search around a little to remind myself what some of the more talented photographers can do with it. Though, of those photographers, they also had a healthy back stock of non-hdr that were just as stunning and even more so in some cases.

@LucienHughes12 жыл бұрын
Well actually it pretty much does, you can make an image which had just as good dynamic range as this using RAW files. Bracketing is practically pointless in this day and age.
@markedwards33 жыл бұрын
HDR is for when the dynamic range is so wide that you are losing important detail. That is not always possible from a single image such as in this image I took a few days ago flic.kr/p/2kBTCaf. A single exposure could not even get close to retaining the detail you see in this image.

@albertopeixoto12 жыл бұрын
It's not about bad exposure, sometimes it's impossible to get a good exposure inside and outside of a building without using lots of flashes and lights. Specially if your camera has a poor dynamic range sometimes you either get blown out highlights or underexposed parts. HDR done with moderation can be useful, but just like Kai said, don't do it just for the sake of it, do it when you need it.

@L33tw0rk12 жыл бұрын
As usual, Kai went for a entertaining approach rather than an informative one. I cannot say that the whole potential of HDR photography is explored here. usually a scene that needs HDR has a foreground that very close to the camera usually something on the ground, a subject thats sufficiently far away, and a background that is usually the sky. The photos taken in this video hardly need much latitude to work in PP.

Agree mostly on HDR on new cameras and DSLRs, but I must admit it did wonders with my mobile phone. (where the range and everything else is mostly crap). I actually managed to pull some decent shots with my Samsung Galaxy S2, that would be really lame without HDR. Especially the details in the sky that would be completely lost and burned without the underxposed image. Not bad when the only thing you have in hand is your crappy mobile camera.
