[Quick How-to] Install Damper for Easy DIY HVAC Ductwork

Hi, this is a quick video showing how to install a manually controlled damper to your HVAC ductwork. In my opinion, all takeoffs need to have a damper installed but it needs to be carefully planned out before running the ductwork.

You can easily install a damper without disassembling the duct work by: 1. Cutting a slot perpendicular to the ductwork so you can slide the damper into the duct. 2. Drill a hold on the opposite side of the duct. 3. Slide the damper into the duct and seat it in the hole you drilled. 4. Drill a hole in a piece of scrap ductwork large enough to cover up the slot you cut in step one. 5. Screw the scrap patch over the slot to seal it and finally install the handle on the damper. You can see this in a "this old house" video on dampers.

Wish my damper is set simple like this. I have a flexible duct and there is wingnut which sticks up vertically and can only turn it to the left and right. How do I determine which is closed and open?

My damper’s handle was aligned with the damper so I could know open/closed that way

Look for a slot on top of the screw head, it should be the same angle as the damper.

Seal those joints. You’re also experiencing heat/ cooling loss from lack of insulation.
