EVERY game is a game but not every game is the same TYPE of game. Different games benefit from different types of interfaces and effects. @ 34ish minutes when Pat enters the combination to unlock the safe he's looking at the Pad's screen while Ryan is looking at the TV, Ryan tells Pat that the Zombies are in the room. This is where this new type of interface ADDS to the experience because it can make this game enjoyable for more than one person. (bolding for inflection, not to yell at you)

You're wrong. The original Playstation controller did not have analog controls, only a D-Pad. The result of moving a character in 3D with only a D-Pad was the tank controls you know today. The dual analog controller wasn't released until a year after RE.

You're right, but it was designed for a PS1 controller, which is very limiting for 3d games. The controls were pretty standard for that type of game at the time.

I played Zombi on the Amiga which was Ubisofts first game. Its very similar to this, first person/point and click game. Its not great, but a very interesting concept if you are interested in the origins of this game.

Hes right, it was the only way to have manual aiming in third person with 1 D-pad, which is the reason they did those controls. Otherwise they would have had to do auto aim or first person, and they almost did first person, but decided to use Alone in the Dark as a model instead.

This is a nice idea and a slippery slope wrapped up in one. I buy your argument in some cases, like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, where clunky controls and stressful UI contribute to the atmosphere. But some games that intentionally subvert more common control schemes for seemingly no reason and explain it away with "immersion" piss me off.

The design of the controls in RE 1-3 were intentional it was used to add tension now-a-days its called tank controls, not the technology, RE4 came and kick the poor control shit out of the water.

One developer, A3 games, cancelled ONE game. Not developers plural. A3 'cancelled' Metro 2033 : Last Light because they weren't sure if they could optimise performance to match the WiiU's capabilities in time for release. This is because they were concentrating on the PS3 release (last time the previous Metro game only released on PC and 360). And this is all because PS3 sales have seen a recent spike due to the latest console re-release. This is a business decision, not technical.

Survival Games are intentionally clunky in their controls. Think about it, can you go through your backpack without taking it off and opening it? Are zombies gunna wait for you to finish what you're doing? It adds to the suspense and makes the game more immersive.

Yep I get that. And I'm not trying to defend the combat in this game, as it does look pretty unsatisfactory. But as far as Patrick's enjoyment is concerned, my guess is that he likes the gestalt of it. It does seem to err a bit more towards the survival end of survival horror, which kind of tend to have bad combat. Perhaps as an artificial way to ratchet up tension though.
