I appreciate the manner in which you realistically presented the ACTUAL challenges in making a shelter while wearing a poncho. Thank you for expressing your concern for victime of Hellene. Our area along the northern half of the Al-GA state line was in the originally projected path of the storm before it suddenly turned northeastward & missed our area. We have many friends who live the areas most devastated. ALL the victims remain in our thoughts & prayers. By lowering the end of the poncho tied to the tree, the plow point shelter becomes long enough to stretch out, lie down, & sleep if an overnight stay becomes necessary in an emergewncy or survival situation. Thank you, & may God bless you, sir. Your accent reminds me of those which my family heard when we lived in SE KY about 40 miles beyond the Cumberland Gap. This presentation motivated me to watch your other videos & possibly subscribe! An 83 year old outdoor adventurer.

I'm still blown away how far north this storm came with so much power. I'm so glad you were missed by it. I also have many friends who live in the hard hit areas and am so thankful they made it through ok. But it will take a long time for these communities to reco er from such devastation. We were very lucky our valley didn't hit as bad as only a few miles away did. My heart goes out to all who were terribly impacted. Yes sir , I agree that lowering the tree tie out point will increase the space to provide plenty of space to lay down and stretch out. In an emergency situation if you carry at least an emergency bivy bag, ( super light and packs small ) in your day pack. It can increase your chances of making it through the night being a little warmer. Thank you again for your support 🙏

I haven't try it yet. But it maybe easier. To use some bungees. And some bungee hitches. Thanks for your videos. Cheers 🍻

I couldn't agree more! Absolutely, some bungees could make this easier. Be much quicker than knots 🪢. Cheers 🍻

I immediately subscribed after reading about your Appalachian adventures. Our 6 years in Central Appalachia were very meaningful; we now live in Southern Appalachia. I share your interest ibn various shelter tarp configurations. I love the Appalachians! Blessings on you & yours! 83 year Old Adventurer

Thank you so much for your support. I was born and raised in Appalachia. Grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, free to roam the hills and explore its beauty. There is no place like it, and feel blessed to live a simple life in such a wonderful place.

@@AdventureswithMudThanks for your friendly & courteous response. I look forward to future conversations with you. My family lived In Red Bird Valley when the Cumberland River in Pineville, KY flooded in the mid-1970s. The only thing separating us from the disaster was Birch Lick Mountain. We still miss the mountain life many decades later; but we still live the simpler life. Although we are in the Coosa River Valley, in NE AL, we have beautiful mountains nearby. Bogan Mountain is just across the road from where I hunt. May God bless you & yours, along with all the victims of the hurricane.

Look forward to future conversations as well, my friend. I'm in Virginia nowadays, thankfully still pretty close to my original stomping grounds. Very nice to be close to my family. I tried the city life for a while in San Diego far from home. After a few years I found myself day dreaming about the mountains and hard wood forest. I knew it was time to return and I appreciate these hills now more than ever. Take care 😁

I was itching to point out a flaw in your strategy here, when you pulled out the scrap of tarp for a waterproof spot to sit on. Great idea and good video bud.

Haha, yes, only takes a time or 2 with a wet behind to add an extra piece of tarp to the kit. Thank you !

Glad you liked it, thank you. Welcome from across the pond . Thankfully, this next storm isn't heading our way. We do have family in Florida in the storms path. I think they are a little inland but it could still be really bad. Hope it slows down before landfall 🤞

You have illustrated the issues with using your shelter as a poncho, or your poncho as a shelter. The trick is to carry TWO ponchos! 😂😂😂
@AdventureswithMudАй бұрын
Lol 😆! Yes, that would solve that problem . 2 is 1 and 1 is none haha
@richardschafer7858Ай бұрын
I always have a tarp rolled up on the outside of my pack for a quick shelter. Works way better than a poncho as a shelter.
@asmith7876Ай бұрын
@@richardschafer7858 I'm a tarp and hammock guy, have been for decades. I bring a poncho but it's not my only shelter for sure! Too small and I don't do stealth camping, we set up chairs, eat steak, enjoy the forest.
@richardschafer7858Ай бұрын
@@asmith7876 Nice! I picked up "stealth" camping as a paratrooper. All we ever had was a poncho and poncho liner. 😆 Now, I enjoy my comforts, even when backpacking! 😉

@@richardschafer7858 My Army days were spent on a 13 ton tracked vehicle gun system, nothing stealthy about it, but I did use the poncho. Minimal camping for me is not bringing the chair. 😂

I've wondered about this myself. A poncho can be rain gear or a shelter; but if it's already raining, how do you transition from one to the other without getting wet? I've been meaning to try something like what you did, but you beat me to it. Nicely done, thanks!

find or make a comfy place sit and lean against with your back to the wind and break out your woobie if you have it and need it.
@AdventureswithMudАй бұрын
Definitely that works great with a poncho to just hunker down. I do have a woobie and even modified it so I can wear it under my poncho if need be. I generally don't carry it with me on day hikes though.

Most definitely, I agree . I would use my tarp, though, if I were doing an overnight journey. This would be more for a day hike shelter in the rain 👍
