How to quick fix you microwave touch panel. This worked for me and saved me $150 for replacement part.
Unplug microwave
Remove vent guard
Remove control panel
Ribbon cable is slid into connector
Probably loose, pull up then slide into place firmly. Make sure you are lined up!
Reconnect everything
Try your key pad!

I'm a woman and a senior citizen without a lot of skills, and this worked great for me. I was able to fix the touch pad on my GE Profile after watching this video. It wasn't difficult and I also cleaned the ribbon cables with a Qtip dipped in alcohol before inserting them back into place. I had originally called an appliance repairman who told me over the phone that it wasn't worth the price of a service call and to just buy a new microwave.

Dude, you're awesome!!! Just moved into a new house with one of these microwaves above our oven. Kept getting the "KEYPAD SHORTED" error message whenever we plugged it in. Called the service number listed on the microwave, but then I thought a better solution would be to try Google first. Your video was the first to show up on Google, in my search. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the easy to follow steps and for saving us $150!

I've dealt with a microwave that I thought was just a huge piece of shit for like 2 years because I just put up with unplugging it and having it work intermittently for a minute or so at a time. It also would turn on by itself without anyone even in the same room. Then we'd get the keypad shorted message and have to unplug and restart. Watched this today and figured what the hell. Now we've got a fully functioning microwave again. Awesome work.

SAVED me a lot of money thank you. My problem was the ribbon connecting the smart board to the touch control panel was pinched and the microwires were damaged. I cut just a little bit of the damaged ribbon with a very sharp scissors and it worked for me. I used a magnifying glass to view the damaged wires and assess how much to cut.

This was the exact fix my microwave needed! The #1 and power level buttons no longer worked. The hardest part was getting my cover off. Very weird hex screws with a bump in the middle. I popped up the strip holder, pulled the strip out and wriggled it back in, popped the holder back in place. Plugged it in and bingo! All the buttons worked! Replaced cover, put it back on its shelf, plugged in and it STILL worked! LOL It was 12:31 am, so it required 3 1's. (a.m. used the 1) Needlesstosay, I was able to set the time and I checked all the buttons including power level. It's all working. Saved me from having to replace oven or the touchpad. Thanks!

I used your method before with instant success. This time, I had to remove all the connectors, reset both the large and small ribbons (GE Profile 2.0), plugin and unplug the unit. The first time plugged in, the unit showed the 88:88, second time the clock - I just kept repeating - touching the clock keypad. Finally it beeped and I set the clock. Had to unplug the unit to reconnect the ground wire (little green one) just because I had left it off. Thought I would be back to square one. BUT - I reattached the unit and vent, plugged in, reset the timer and so far, it is working. Diligence paid off. Thank you for the video, and the comments. I read through them all for more specifics. I have a feeling I'll be back! Merry Christmas 2014 and thank you jeahman316!

AWESOME FIX! Our microwave is about one year old... and has tripped the breaker multiple times. This last time, it did not come back on... outlet was working, so decided to check it out online before calling repair guy in. Video was easy to follow, walked me thru steps (with minor changes for my model) and easy fix! We placed electrical tape on the metal edges, then removed and re-installed the BUS cable. Bingo! That easy!

The problem is, I believe, that the ribbon cable(s) from the control panel to the works rubs against the frame, wears off the insulation, and shorts out (possibly when it gets wet). I fixed my Samsung (I think GE re-badges it) by putting a piece of electrical tape on the frame and, for good luck, slipped a piece of scrap paper between the two ribbon cables. The MW has worked for years. Thanks for reminding me how to get the grill and the control panel off.

Worked great for me. It helped me fix the "Service Panel shorted and may need service" in my RV's Microwave. Due to my specific installation, I also had to also loosen the 3 additional top screws in my cabinet and tilt the microwave down in the front before I could access the screws holding the vent cover and then access the single screw holding the service panel. If you also need to do this, have an appropriate size piece of wood to rest the microwave on in the tilted posiition and a helper to hold it while you cut the wood to the size needed before removing the last screw keeping it from tilting down. Before seeing this video I was planning to buy a new Microwave. I had no problem viewing it. The ribbon cable connector top part of the connector pulls up to loosen the ribbon cable and pushes down to lock it into place. This is referred to as a ZIF (Zero Insertion force) connector. After you lift up on the top part of the connector the cable is easy to pull in and out. While pushing it down into the connector, then push the top part of the connector back down to lock in the ribbon cable. If that doesn't work you might also try wiping the end of the ribbon cable with Alcohol to clean it. Sometimes cables like this have different connection material than the connector they plug into and this can cause some corrosion over time through Galvanic corrosion caused when dissimilar material are in contact with each over. Reseating or cleaning the connection can help fix the problem. Same problem often seen on LCD, Keyboard, track point cables etc. But, I was surprised GE would use a ZIF connector on a Microwave. Typically a ZIF is a low profile connector used where space is limited. But space is not a problem in a Microwave. IMO using a ZIF where space is not a premium is either a poor cost saving decision or an attempt to drive more service revenue and /or earlier appliance replacement by people not willing to tackle a repair themselves or spend money for a repair cost that would be almost as much as a replacement Microwave would cost.

The white base that won't come off of the circuit board has two little clips, one on each side. Lifting each one with a flathead screwdriver loosens the ribbon for you. Conversely, once you remove the remove and reinsert the cable, push the little clips down and it'll help lock in place.
@MikeDSchnell
@MikeDSchnell 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Schnell .... correction, it's actually one long clip. So when lifting it, lift it a little on each side, going back and forth, until it's lifted about a 1/8 inch. Same for securing it back down: push down a little on the left, a little on the right, until completely down.

I have a GE profile microwave with some of the touchpad not working ---defrost, stop cancel button ect,,, I removed the front panel as shown the video. I took photographs of the connections on the panel with my iPhone, then unplugged each connection, one at a time, then plugged it back to the board. It appears that vibration from the fan as well as closing the microwave door over time causes loose connection in the panel circuit, which causes the touchpad to stop working. It works great now!! Saved $700 in repair cost!! Remember to unplug the power cable before you start working on it!!

Superb! I tried this on my 15 year old Kenmore combination microwave-stove hood. Some keys worked, most did not. This problem has happened before, usually after cooking a soup or stew on the stove, which generates a lot of humidity under the microwave oven, and previously it has "fixed itself" over a period of days. But not this time. I removed the grill above the oven door, removed the one screw at the top of the touch pad-control panel, pushed the panel up and let it swing down perpendicular to the oven bottom, unseated and reseated the ribbon cable. That's all it took to make all the keys function again. Total repair time was less than 5 minutes. jeahman316, you rock!
