Quick Sangean PR-D4W Portable Radio Review

I have both the CC2E and PR-D4W sets. For the money, both are good value radios that perform very well. It's unfair though to compare them because the CC2E costs twice as much and betters the PR-D4W accordingly. As for RF performance, the PR-D4W performs about 90% as well on AM and FM as the CC2E. That's quite impressive! However, the PW-D4W is trounced by the CC2E when it comes to audio quality.

Love my Sangean PR-D4. Runs long time on 4 D cell batteries excellent reception on AM.

If you get the Sangean PR-D4W and the Raddy RF-L3 Multifunction Radio the large 6v solar panel on a long cord that comes with the Raddy can be plugged into the Sangean and it powers it perfectly. Just tested it.

that said if you want a bedside weather radio from Sangean, the CL-100 is a really good radio. Granted you give up that reception the numerous bandwith filters, but you get 2 fully configurable alarms you can set for whatever days you want, S.A.M.E. alerts, rds for fm and a very nice display for viewing at night .

the benefit is a radio designed for receiving distant stations, auto tuning am meaning much less need to do the turning the radio thing, it has the weather and an allert function so it will alert you of weather emergencies.

You complained about what I really want to complain about. I bought a PR-D8 several years ago and it's sound is so muffle. It has a really good speaker and I bet it could sound much better than it does now. For so long time, I gave up buying their product because of this (and quality problem).

Hi Jeffrey ! I was looking for a top-class AM portable receiver, I think I found it. The CCrane was supposed to be the best, but a bit expensive and not available in Europe. I hope this Sangean is ... Thanks for the nice review. >>> Added note : just found US and Canadian dealers/distributors so far. Either they do not ship to EU or the shipping is quite expensive. Bad luck :-(

+Eddie Martz I hate the muffled sound of the PR-D5. The PR-D4 is a far superior radio. Funny, the PR-D5 has a bigger ferrite antenna but AM sounds better on my PR-D4. PR-D4 blows away the PR-D5's FM.

Good to know. The D4 seems under the radar and underrated. Everyone seems to praise the D5. The FM is a bit weak but still picks up pretty much all of my stations as I live in an area of strong signals. To me the audio is a bit too much on the treble side. I am a radio collector.

My only complaint on this radio is the noise generated by the switching power supply on AM. On batteries this thing is a beast at pulling in stations on AM.

I'm using mine in the garage. I am getting great FM reception. I never play AM. My only problem is when I turn it off, it moves one point up the channel and turns back on once in a while. For example, I turn off KPCC 89.3, the radio turns off for one second and then turns on to 89.4 with static. Very annoying.

@@JeffreyMcMahon I use mine on my nightstand at night to receive AM1060 from Calgary Alberta and I am in Seattle. AM1060 is a 24 hour Stand Up Comedy channel that I find very amusing.

@@JeffreyMcMahon I think CKMX in Calgary is great. They rotate from comedian to comedian, with a bit from each one. Each segment lasts about 2 minutes, and then it is on to the next comedian with an introduction by the announcer as to who it is. All of the greats are on there from Brian Regan, Richard Prior, George Carlin, Christopher Titus, Kathleen Madigan, Dmitri Martin and Patton Oswalt. If there is a standup comedian, then they are on there at one time or another. I find it relaxing to listen to each of their bits.

@@j.frankparnell6195 I made a 16 inch loop with a pizza box (16 turns of 24 awg magnet wire and 450 pf tuning capacitor) that actually improves reception of the CCrane EP PRO and Sangean PR-D4W which was a surprise. I made a demo video of it with the Tecsun PL-660. It makes the AN-200 loop look like trash.

Not sure by off grid but C Crane has huge speaker sound. Sangean does not.

The PR-D4W will serve you well off-grid especially if there is little or no RFI. It boasts unusually good sensitivity.

a really good radio that in typical Sangean fashion misses the mark on a few points for its purpose... in the case of the emergency radio there was a missed opportunity to have a battery charger and illuminated screen. The Illuminated screen also hurts it for dxing as sitting on the porch at night its kind of prefferable to be able to read the display.

The PR-D4's superior FM reception to the Sangean CL-100's compelled me to put the PR-D4 back by my bedside. I have no illumination, so I'll have to "suffer." More first-world problems.

Get rid of that switching AC adapter. Get one with a transformer and the AM at night will be much better.

My D4W beats my 2E. Like yours my 2E buttons stopped working. It is an over rated radio.
