Quick test of iPhone 5 wirelessly mirrored to car head unit display

iPhone 5 with iOS7 beta (not needed for this, iOS 6 is fine) with personal hotspot enabled. An inverter powers and Apple TV, and also a composite to HDMI converter box from eBay. The Apple TV is tethered to iPhone personal hotspot, and connected via HDMI to the converter and then into a Sony XAV-701BT head unit set to AV input 2. Note that unlike Sony Mirrorlink, Pioneer AppRadio, or Apple's iOS in the car (due 2014) touching the screen in the dash does nothing, there is no touch feedback from the touch screen to the iPhone. However, videos and music stream in excellent quality, even from rear seat passengers. And as Apple TV is fully supported by Apple, everything mirrors perfectly. Not all iPhone screens are designed for landscape orientation though as it is a phone, so the home screen will often appear vertical. An iPad would be better suited, except iPad is 4:3 aspect ratio so wouldn't fill the screen unless video was playing. Video will always play full screen from any iOS device.

You can also use a Kivic ONE or equivalent device for a wireless solution with fewer number of components. Overall cost of set-up would be equivalent or less. It also wouldn't limit you to an apple device. A cost effective wired solution is the apple digital A/V adapter cord to a MINI branded HDMI2AV converter into one of you A/V inputs in the head unit. I have a AVIC-Z150BH and will be doing this since Pioneer does not send appradio to rear headrest screens (only DVD and A/V inputs).

Wirelessly I see! Is that the only way? With a Apple TV ? Have you tried Siri eyes free or iOS mirror? Do you know if that would work? Or should I get an Apple TV ❓

Why the Apple TV? Why not a apple lightning AV converter to hdmi than connected to the back of the sony system? I just ordered an AppRadio 3 from pioneer and that's how it's done on AppRadio's. Is there something I'm missing⁉️ or is that the only way to truly mirror the iphone?📱
