the black gi has its uses, like nights of the new moon. and depending the type of fabric it may not reflect the light anyway. I feel a certain attachment to a specific uniform i wear but when it comes down to it your gi is just another piece of equipment and should be chosen depending on the job. If its just practice then wear whatever the hell you want.

Also, this book "How to make Your Own Japanese Clothes" is available on Amazon.com.. I've made my own Hanten Jackets (judo gi top) which were very easy to do. If you are just learning how to use a sewing machine, this is an excellent book to help you start your own variations and designs while you learn to machine stitch new ideas. The only garment not mentioned in this book is the "Hakama" or the pleated trousers used in Aikido, Kendo or Iaido (sword drawing). But I did find patterns online.

There is a book you might want to find. "How to make your own Japanese Clothes". It is a good book I've used for many years. It explains the principles behind the design of Japanese clothes, which were constructed to preserve the value of the cloth used (usually rare silks). As a result, most garments were really a variation of squares and rectangles that were hand stitched. When they needed to be cleaned, they were unstitched, washed, and then restitched. I hope this book will be helpful to you
