I had trouble trying to paint 3 smooth haired dogs and asked you for advice. You told me to forget the dogs, look at them as light and shadow. That great advice helped me immensely, to move forward on the painting. You are such a blessing for a beginner!

Ursula, that's good to hear. I wish ALL painting instructors would focus on teaching how to see rather than just technical stuff. The technical stuff is important, but empty if a person doesn't have the composing tools.

Have seen several of these tutorials TONIGHT and just watched a cute little white dog turn into several different colours. Scream! it is so obvious open yours eyes and the advice is so on the ball because you almost want to paint little furry lines and you know the dog would end up looking like a little furry ball and not real. I have just painted a blue heron (my fave) but now off to give him a second look. Thank you so much and good luck.

Since my children have left home in the last three years (I am 57) and when people ask how did I start painting etc, which was again only thee years ago. I just say, I never had time before to see, I only ever looked. Great stuff, thank you. 💜

I may have sd this on one of your videos before. I do watercolor. I watch your vids anyway! Your lessons on value and color are always very helpful to me. In addition, your comment (today) about deciding what the brush needs to do to get the look a specific movement in an image is a very good way to think about finding accurate texture. Thank you so much!

Thank you for your instruction on this subject. I've been struggling a little bit with creating texture and it was really helpful to see how to focus on the values of the colors in the fur as I apply the brush to the canvas. I'm about to attempt to paint a short haired dog , a dachshund, so I'll be trying to remember this lesson as I paint!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
It always works to look for what the subject is made of rather than the subject itself. Good luck with your dachshund painting.

What kind of pencil/pen do you use to sketch or shade under an oil painting?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
For studies and these demos, to set up the sketch and the notan, I use a Tombow N65 pen/brush.

i have a question: Do you distinguish purple and violet? and why do people often confuse or interchange these two colours? thank you for your very educative and entertaining videos.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 жыл бұрын
R.A., I use the terms interchangeably. Violet is the tern most often used on commercial color wheels and some tube colors, but dioxazine purple is used for that particular tube color. The theorists say that violet is a spectral color and purple a pigment color. Some say that violet is lighter than purple. Frankly, I think in today's culture, it's a matter of nomenclature.
@r.a.85822 жыл бұрын
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction i always thought that violet is leaning towards blue, and purple leans more red. Thank you for clarifying this and have a wonderful day!

What do you use to paint the notan?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
It varies. For my small demos, I use a Tombow N65 brush pen. For my larger paintings, I use either acrylic or gouache.

I was told that a painting should have at least 5 or 6 layers . Do you agree with that ?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not! A painting done alla prima might have a single layer or perhaps two. The old standard of building with layers is only one approach to paintings.
