I love this video. Ive tried 7 different reds , 4 different yellows , and 4 different whites. I honestly think to get his exact colors its : Flake White , Vermillion, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black. The main thing is the Vermillion. You cannot get the same light beautiful orange pink flesh tone highlights with any other red. Also Titanium white is way to strong and is hard to tone down.

Always remember though that this was Zorns start palette and he added whatever other pigments he needed as required. It's a beautiful portrait palette especially with vermilion as the read and a light ochre. I think it's really good to set limits of different kinds as it personally removes the temptation to focus too much on selecting from the huge range of interesting pigments we have available now. It amazing how much can be achieved with some very limited colours. I have sometimes, as an exercise, selected a yellow red blue of types not usual to me and with the addition of burnt umber just seen what happened. Ie naples yellow, English red and cobalt deep or some other combination of pigments I haven't tried together. It's always really interesting what you discover

Thank you for this. I love all the subtleties of flesh tone you can see with Zorn's palette. I would like to know how to create a basic colour wheel of flesh tones using the colours you used. Thank's again for this tip and sharing many more.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
Flesh tones vary according to skin pigmentation, lighting (which includes shadows), and reflective colors. The one thing all skin tones have in common is that they are low in hue saturation, which means they are low chroma (intensity). Since a color wheel identifies hues, to create one for flesh tones, you need the full range of hues that might give you all areas of any pigmentation and the variations you might find in areas hit by degrees of light, degrees of shadow and reflective light. I recommend that you watch some of Cesar Santos' KZbin videos to get some clues.

As many folks ground their initial works in both cool and warm grey before beginning their hue insertion would you think that this particular pallet might permit greater facility when using glazes in conjunction with a toned backdrop for the chosen hues? Just a thought, since much of immediate blocking is often done with either a neutral cast earth or grey cast pigments. Just a brain fade idea at best. Thank you for supporting the idea that a broader approach to painting is necessary to a Jillian differing colors jumbling up a composition that benefits by contrast and color alliances. Great content.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 3 жыл бұрын
Setting a grisaille prior to applying color is a traditional method of painting that goes back as early as the 1500's. Certainly, using the Zorn palette as an underpainting, then using glazes in layers to build up the color would be an interesting approach. Why don't you give it a try?
@murraykriner9425
@murraykriner9425 3 жыл бұрын
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction understand perfectly what you mean, but was thing more along the lines of using the Zorn palette as the glaze once the underpaint is done in greys using primarily the appropriately tinted white & black constituents to build the negative and positive elements beforehand. I often wander back to the Flemish origins for stripping away the often tedious methods used by colorist these days. Thanks for responding back so quickly. The Munsell traits has served me well for decades, but often I look for other methods to uncomplicate the whole process.

I work in my icon paintings (egg tempera) with a very similar palette for tetrachrome. I use Yellow Ochre, Ercolana Red, Iron Oxyd Black and Titanium White. Mixing Black and White and glaze this over a warm underpainting gives a nice blue. The only downside is, that this is opaque while the rest of the painting is transparent.

Great video, as always. I bought the original Zorn palette from Rublev historical paints. Having used the colors, their Ivory Black and traditional Vermilion Red, (mercury sulphate,) are much more opaque, the White, (lead white,) and Yellow Ochre, relatively more transparent. I'm guessing he put on the black first, just that, and then the red and then glazed the yellow and afterwards. So it may not be that he mixed them so much on the palette, as you are demonstrating, but allowed one layer to dry, then brought the others in as semi-transparent glazes.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 4 жыл бұрын
Take a look at his painting, Musician, 1914. You can see in this one especially how colors are blended rather than layered (especially on the white garment and the violin), so most likely he incorporated both methods into his work with quite a bit of palette mixing.

Thanks a lot for this very useful tip. I was trying to figure out a limited pallet and perhaps Zorn pallet can be used with adding just one or two more colors to make a practical one. I will sure try it. One request: I wished you could make a quick tip on actual process of start to finish of a small painting wet on wet. Will you put paints side by side, or on top of each other and if so how you prevent mixing the colors and creating gray. Do you start by underpainting or just go over white canvas. Thanks anyway.

I have done a chart using the Zorn palette, I used Yellow Ocher, Cadium Red Lite, Ivory Black and Flake Lead White, the chart gave me so much insight using this limited palette. With this I completed a landscape, a caveat is I added Cerulean Blue. I found that I did use very little of the blue. The subject matter and the values I got from the limited palette was quite affective for this particular scene.

Good video👍 I think it was Vermillion because if that bright orange / hint of purple in his models ears and feet. Its almost impossible to get that tint with any other red.

I'm pretty sure it was Vermillion, but folks love to argue the point.

I’m an absolute beginner in painting but I totally obsessed with limited palettes. I’m not yet into oil paint, but I’m exploring it in watercolours and colour pencils.

Color works the same in all mediums. Only the technique if mixing varies.

Thank you. I have tried this pallet and found it to be a little darkish or boring, but I see I have to give this more time.😊

The values of the original tube colors, no matter how dark, can be controlled with white and other lighter versions of the hues. When any artist selects a palette, it is assumed that white will be a part of it, even though white might not be mentioned.

We always end up choosing the palette that best works for what we are doing. It could work for a landscape in winter. Could, in fact, be exciting.

Most folks who study Zorn in depth agree it was Vermilion. I don't know whether Zorn left any notes behind to verify that, but we do know that the palette itself works.

I'm using this palette right now with two changes: Pyrrol Red (I don't use toxic paints) and Payne's Grey. The Payne's grey allows for more varied greens and blue-grey's.

Hi Diane , thank you for such an insightful video , please can you advise me if I am doing an alla prima portrait ... should I do a quick underpainting first using the zorn pallete and then refine on top or should I do an underpainting just with the ivory black and vermilion to get the shadow areas defined and then go ahead and paint thjicker on top in one sitting? Thank you

Ruby, there are many approaches to success alla prima portrait painting. I suggest you go to Cesar Santos' KZbin channel - www.youtube.com/@santocesart/videos - and watch his approach. He is classically trained and knows what he is doing.

A short while ago I got myself the colours necessary for Zorn's palette. I just substituted Cadmium red for Pyrrole red light for price reasons. Is that an acceptable substitute? The rest I kept as it was. And I'm really glad to learn more about it.
