Quick Tip 37 - Palette Knife Painting

I had an expensive Sennelier one that I thought i lost so got a cheaper one which ended up gouging lumps out of my wood palette in my box easel which the Sennelier one didn't. But I found my more expensive one again (any time I went to our art shop around here they were always sold out of that particular shape). Buy cheap buy twice!

What is the difference between art store palette knives and the metal ones that are cheap on ebay from China that I already have? .. ( I know better ones are rust proof and may fall apart faster, but I just want to know if they pretty much work the same for applying paint)

Well, Lisa, any kind of palette knife might be available on Ebay. When buying one, look for the knife to be metal, not plastic, and for it to have good flexibility.

I loved this tutorial. Your descriptions and analogies were so helpful! I am a newish painter in acrylics, but I have always been such a perfectionist when using brushes, and it leaves me disappointed. I decided to learn palette knife, since it is not meant to be precise - to teach myself to accept being more impressionistic and less focused on precision. My question is twofold: Are you using Oils or Acrylics? I am finding many of the acrylics I own are far too watery for the buildup I see most knife workers using (cheap bargain paints). I have one brand that has great thickness, but not many colors in it. Is there a way to thicken thinner paints so that they work better with the knife, or just buy better paint? LOL Sorry for the long post. Will subscribe and start working through all your vids. Be well and stay safe!

In most of these Quick Tips, I'm using oils. I'm not an acrylic painter although I did use it in my college classes back in the 60's. There are acrylic mediums that add body to the paint, but I doubt seriously that you can stiffen a watery acrylic paint without weakening the color.

Love your instruction, but I will once again ask-no-BEG- your camera operator to stop pulling away to wide-angle shots when you’re demonstrating a technique, e.g., picking up paint on the palette knife. S/he continually does this, and it’s very difficult to see what, exactly, you are doing. Pleeeeease?
