I wrote on this and forgot to push send. I love this. A couple of months ago my curious mind wondered what happened if you use black with colors. I started experimenting and was so surprised at some of the rich colors. And here it is in better detail. As always you make it fun.

I LOVED today.s tip. I always had a prejudice against using tube black except when I wanted to use the Zorn palette for a painting. This video gave me a whole new way of using black.

Thank you for your tips. They are always so helpful. I’m hoping you can give a tip on what kind of pants you use as they seem to be soft, smooth, and glide so easily and how do you store them on your pallet without them crusting over. Is there a particular palette or open paint holder/storage you would recommend?

It might help for you to watch Quick Tip 172 where I talk about my painting rig. I use Rembrandt and Gamblin paints. Both are creamy and pliable. One thing we have to watch for though is how long a tube of paint has been sitting on the store's shelf. Some brands have a tendency for the oil in the paint to setting away from the pigment, causing the paint to be stiff.

Hi Dianne - I have a general question about oil painting....I have a small studio space in my bedroom...I've heard people say one should never sleep in the same area where he paints. For fumes. Do you have an opinion that you are willing to share. I use Gamsol and the paint colors and brands that you use in your palette. I have 1 window. I am not thinking of fire safety or that sort, I'm thinking of inhaling fumes while sleeping and painting. Thank you for your experience and wisdom.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 ай бұрын
Hi Lolita. Gamsol is probably the least toxic of all solvents. If you cap your solvent container securely and cover your palette (if paint is still on it) after each painting session, there should be no danger. If your bedroom/studio is not ventilated, to be safe, open a window and let it air out for about ten minutes or so after each painting session.

Mars black and lamp black will do the same thing to transparent colors, but not to yellow.

Thank you so much. I use black sometimes in painting my illustration vehicles. But normally I mix two dark colours together instead of using black

Excellent video! So helpful. When using black, is there any way to affect the flatness/dullness of the dried color/paint?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction5 ай бұрын
That effect is not caused by black. Some oil pigments flatten when they dry because of their chemistry. The best way to alleviate that is to oil out your painting once it's dry OR, if you are sure you'd finished, varnish it with a high-quality picture varnish.

Thank so much for this quick tips. I was also wondering how black could fit in and being useful. As I understand it, black is one of the “modifiers” pigment as Phtalo green is in my work (sadly availability and means prevent me to go for true viridian) My questions (maybe a part 2 for future quick tip) how black related with the colours wheel in terms of saturation/hue? How the information given here can be applied with watercolour? Ivory Black seems to be the one to go to from others I saw online, is lamp and mars black give similar results? Thanks you for taking the time and putting the effort into your channel, since I got back to painting 3 years ago, your quick tips helped me to improve a lot.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 ай бұрын
Perhaps this might make a good Quick Tip, but I will answer here, too. Black does not fit on the color wheel because it is not a hue. Rather, it is a neutral that results from hues neutralizing each other. Yes, black can be used to modify transparent colors in watercolor. The pigments in watercolor and oil are the same. Only the binder is different. The variations in black available in tube colors differ in the materials that make them. Ivory black is made from charred animal bones acquired from butchers. Lamp black was originally residue from oil lamps, but today is made from burned oil or gas. Mars black is not a carbon based pigment, but one made from synthetic iron oxides. All blacks vary somewhat in temperature.

Make black by combining burnt umber with cobalt blue
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 ай бұрын
True, but burnt umber and ultramarine blue give a more transparent black.
