Tamiya Extra Thin (TET) is a mainstay in the hobby, but one of the annoyances is the cap brush that can't seem to reach the dregs when the bottle starts to run low. Here's an insanely, headsmackingly simple tip to address that.

LOL! Your intro was hilarious - it was like you've been watching me at my modelling desk for the past two years making an idiot of myself attempting to deal with my dregs of Tamiya thin!!! Thanks a million for taking the time to pass on the tip!

I was aware of this with the brush. I just wanted to comment though to say if anyone has not used this product it is absolutely fantastic. The capillary action is amazing, a little goes a really long way.

Wow, what a great bit of info. How did we miss that one? Is it because the bottle is plastered in Japanese?!
@Dragonblaster14 жыл бұрын
I have a kanban system on Tamiya Extra Thin. When I am down to one bottle, I order another. When the first reaches its end of life, I tip the dregs into the next bottle.
@jetpack53 жыл бұрын
If you turn the cap upside down, you can temporarily cap the bottle with it to stop fumes, you can also mix your own from acetone and butyl acetate (model airplane dope thinner) to a 1:1 mix. Same thing.

Hidden treasure indeed. I usually use low bottles of Extra Thin and mix them with low bottles of Tamiya Orange - end up with a Tamiya Testors. But, perhaps I'm dreaming this and have a secret desire to keep model companies happy, but I think cement works a little better new. I think this is certainly true with CA. If I do a ship I use a lot of Aleene's Tacky (sweet PVA) and new bottles are tackier. Since observing this I've been thinking about effect when I open a new Tamiya - think that's better too. Not a huge difference, but better. The stuff is cheap.

Really cool feature for Tamiya to include, be it intentional or just a by-product of the design. I tend to use a dedicated 00-sized brush for TET and remove the included brush from the cap, though.
@the_zombie_ritual897 Жыл бұрын
Hi @mosokaiser - what type of brush do you use and how do you stop the bristles gluing together?
@MosoKaiser Жыл бұрын
@@the_zombie_ritual897 Some type of natural hair (important, won't melt with solvent exposure) size 00 brush that I relegated to liquid cement duties after losing its ability to keep a fine point but still being perfectly good for cemen application. Bristles gluing together is not an issue with liquid cement like Tamiya Extra Thin, since those are essentially nothing but solvent so it alone won't stick bristles together, and whatever miniscule amounts of styrene the brush might pick up when used, potentially causing some stiffening, is instantly liquified when dipped in the cement again.
@the_zombie_ritual897 Жыл бұрын
@@MosoKaiser Thanks so much!
@MCRoadk1ll4 жыл бұрын
What I did, I removed the brush in the cap and I use a dedicated normal fine brush for glueing. That way you can always get in the bottle. The brush might harden out if you don't use it for a while, but when you use it again let it sit in the bottle for a little bit and the brush will be usable again.

@MCRoadk1ll Жыл бұрын
@@the_zombie_ritual897 hi, it's a regular cheap synthetic brush. The funny thing is after you use it, it becomes rock hard, next time you use it, first you put it in the tamiya extra thin and voila the brush becomes soft again. 👍 i hope it helps.

Or as I recently found out Lacquer thinner works the same as Tamiya extra thin cement. I would bet that Tamiya extra thin cements is actually lacquer thinner. Lacquer is a very chemically hot solvent that melts plastic. So for the price of a quart of lacquer thinner you could buy 20 bottles of the extra thin cement. Just keep topping off your bottle. I love finding cheaper alternative model building products. People are paying way too much for brand name products. Work cheaper and buy more models. But I like your tip of lengthening the brush Thanks

well I don't know whats in TET but its the methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) in Lacquer thinner that doses the weld/melt

You don't need to pull the tip out using pliers. You can just pull the whole brush shaft out of the cap using your fingers and then just press it back in just not as far doing the same thing. I started doing that with the Testors Liquid Cement oh those many years ago. I just thought everybody already knew how to solve this problem. Just goes to show that what you know doesn't mean that everyone else knows it too.

Cool tip~ I have one myself that I want to use for minor repairs and customizing but I’m too worried to use it cause of the crazy cancer warning logo. Is it really that bad? Do I need to wear like a respirator? I have good ventilation in my house since my workstation is near a window, just wanted to ask how you all use it.
@DoogsModels6 жыл бұрын
Caveat - I'm not a doctor. But my understanding is that, at commercial/professional exposure levels, that's where the risk exists. Obviously don't drink the stuff or use it as a lotion. But having a small pot on your desk and using it reasonably, the risks are minimal.
@Roaddbuster6 жыл бұрын
Doogs' Models hmmm, okay well I’m obviously not gonna be drinking the thing like some drunken master haha. But in all seriousness, how do you deal with the vapor that comes out when you open it? Have you ever inhaled it before? I’m not too experienced with the stuff and I tried using it. Just worried about the effects cause of the project I’m working on
@DoogsModels6 жыл бұрын
I do 95% of my work in a garage, with the door opened, with airflow coming from behind me so I rarely have any concerns about ventilation. But even the rare times I do some work indoors, it's a small opening and the cap is usually only off the bottle for a few seconds at a time. It's never bothered me at all.
@Roaddbuster6 жыл бұрын
Doogs' Models so you’ve never really felt any side effects or bothered much of the fumes that come out of the bottle from use?

Nope. I'd be more concerned sitting in line at a drive-thru with the windows down.

I bought some of this and I can't get it to stick well. Am I doing something wrong?
@DoogsModels Жыл бұрын
it doesn't "stick". Glue is actually a terrible name for it. It's more of a chemical welder. It melts styrene and then as it evaporates out the styrene cures "welded" together. Need to move relatively fast though as it evaporates quickly. If you can already get the two parts together and let capillary action pull it down the join, that's the ideal way to go.

... if you are a hard-core modeller you can save a lot of money, when you brew your glue DIY ... you just have to order 1 Liter of Butylacetat at your next pharmacy and 1 Liter of Aceton ... mix them together 1:1 and you've got enough glue for the next years. That brew works similar than Tamiya Extrathin ... smells the same and you could re-activate your dried out putty, to give them a second life. That's all together for about 20 Euro or a liitle less in US Dollars !!
