Great tip about the air gap! I used play dough and measured. I had to use both shims to get the proper air gap. Truck started right up and my oil leak is gone! I also dropped the connector gasket and put it back on to the connector and had to repair the wires with liquid tape. Thanks for the video!

In a situation where you have a straight shot at the hole, Which you don’t always have the ability to do. I like to use the caliper to measure the depth of the reluctor wheel with the bottom depth gauge then measure the sensor and subtract the two. That’s just me though. I think I have a touch of the ocd and if I don’t know exactly what it is it will drive me nuts. Sometimes I still wonder if I did it right anyway. It’s a nightmare. Thank you for taking the time to help us with your videos.

I used to own a '00 Jimmy. Nothing but problems! When the money light came on for the 7th time in 3 months, I yanked that engine out, parted the truck out, and dropped the engine into a '89 S10 Blazer, and bolted on a Edelbrock intake manifold, manual choke carb, and a chinese HEI distributor off eBay. FIXED! She got 17.5 mpg, WAY better throttle response and low-midrange power. That is, until the chinese HEI module fried itself after just 8k miles. Second one lasted 2k miles. Gutted the second one and installed all Echlin electronics. FIXED again! 😁 Great tip! Even with all the trouble I had with that Jimmy, the crank sensor was the one component I never had to change, lol. I'll definitely remember this one. 👍

If the crankshaft position sensor, or timing cover, are moved, removed, replaced, or disturbed in any way, the focus point of the sensor changes and the relearn data that the PCM uses is incorrect. If the engine or PCM is replaced, the relearn is necessary as well. Incorrect relearn data has a direct affect on ignition timing and injector timing and will cause a multitude of driveability issues

It wasnt until my truck started shuttering that i was questioned if my sensor had shims or not. The previous owner did not have shims so when i ordered a new crank sensor i just pulled it out and put the new one. It started shuttering so i changed out the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel lines, plugs, wires, distributor and just went ahead and put a new timing chain while i was at it. What a waste of time after watching this video come to find out some sensors dont come with shims, so they were put on and wham, it runs now. SMDH.

But then I thought, “How do I know if I need a shim? And how do I measure that distance?” Brilliant technique!! And I have a nice micrometer. Thanks a million!! PS: Do I need to do some kind of driving re-learn sequence to get the Blazer to properly use the new sensor? Thanks again!

0.030 is minimum for the air gap I wonder what the maximum is, where do you get those spacers I can’t seem to locate any, I will look for a suitable washer. So if the face of the sensor is gouged from contacting the exciter wheel does that mean main bearing slop, or would a wearing timing chain cause this ?
