On fly by wire cars, make sure the ignition is off before moving the throttle plate.Also don't forget to use nitrile gloves when working to stop the skin from absorbing grease dirt and chemicals.

I appreciate very much the advice given in this video, and especially to those commenters who warned about not manually moving the butterfly valve on a drive-by-wire car, like my '03 Accord. I never would have known that could be harmful to it, so a big "thank you" to all who mentioned it!

Good video, the best product to use to clean out throttle bodies is the ThreeBond Engine Conditioner. Heat the engine to running temp first then turn off the engine and take the hose from the throttle body. Spray the engine conditioner into the throttle body and it will foam up and clean all gummed up areas. It also lubricates the throttle body. Start the engine and spray the rest of the can through and it will clean the complete combustion chamber. It is a complete carbon clean in a can.
@nik1293710 жыл бұрын
This is especially helpful and even important with newer drive-by-wire throttle bodies. Since they're actuated by a small motor or similar, and tend to be taking the place of idle air control valves and the like, they cause a lot of odd problems when sticking. One problem being stalling only when starting the car warm. The throttle will get stuck closed and starve the engine. It also tends to make throttle response feel even more delayed than most drive-by-wire throttles are from the factory. Great tip Eric!

Great job Eric. On my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, I replaced the MAP due to OBD code. My acceleration increase and overall performance was great. Two days later, I got a P0106 code (MAP performance). Cleaning the throttle body was one of the suggestions. In fact, cleaning the throttle body every 30,000 miles or so helps. I can't remember the last time I did this on my SUV (205,000). So I was looking for a video that shows how to clean the throttle body without removing it (I'm not as young as I used to be :)). Thanks again for a quick and concise video.

@chrisbyers47268 жыл бұрын
I would personally recommend removing the throttle body completely. I remove all electronics (IAC, TPS, etc..) and clean all the passages. The TB cleaner shouldn't damage the sensors and valves (IAC) but if I'm cleaning something I'm doing it 100%. Definitely pay attention to removing all the buildup around the edges of the butterfly valve, that's where it will stick the most. And don't use anything abrasive to clean internally, a nylon bristle brush is ok, NO steel wire!! Now if you are still having a problem with throttle response then I'd look at the throttle cable. Just like the hood latch cable it's braided wire that will stretch and when it's stretched the butterfly in the TB won't fully open. There are the cheap zip tie tricks, but just replace the cable, not worth a snapped cable at WOT!!

I just used rubbing alcohol and Air Flow Sensor cleaner. And some Q-tips and paper towels. It's best to do it when you don't have to drive anywhere afterward that day. So do it at the end of the day and let your car sit overnight before starting so the chemicals can evaporate and throttle can air dry overnight. Otherwise you'll take a chance of trouble starting and/or the chemicals flowing your exhaust.

Raul, before you give this advice, you should consider BMW, and maybe some other brands. If you disconnect the battery, you have to re enter the radio security code before the radio works again. What about the readers of this who don't have their radio code and don't realize they will need it after batt disconnect? You can hook up a temporary 12v supply before you disconnect the battery to save the radio code if you had the knowledge. I wouldn't disconnect battery for most throttle body cleanings.

I was getting run away acceleration and the local garage decided it was a manifold leak and blew the engine up trying to prove that theory. It turned out to be a dirty throttle body but by the time they found that I had a knock on the crank. I sold the car a few weeks later. It was one sweet unit. 6k miles. Ran like new, spotless. I only drove it in the summer. I was not going to throw a new rebuilt in it.

Lacquer thinner will destroy any plastics/polymers as well as lubrication/seals on the throttle body shaft. It could also damage the TPS/IAC or other sensors. Thank God for this video, clear flood mode, never heard of that! Sure thing though, started up after a few seconds and a few trys of flooring the pedal. Thank you!

On most OBD II compliant vehicles, when the computer is given a 100% signal from the TPS, the injectors are turned off entirely, so that no more fuel can be put into the cylinders, and as much air is received as possible. This allows the engine to get rid of the excess fuel/carb cleaner, hence the name "clear flood mode".

If you have trouble removing the rubber snorkel, heat up the rubber snorkel up with a heat gun or hairdryer, then wiggle it back and forth until it comes off

Simple but effective. I removed my car's EGR system as well, now I don't have to mind about things like this anymore, well at least not as often as before..

Opening the throttle manually on some cars, especially those with Drive by wire can cause them to lose the idle settings. its best to remove the throttle and spray from both sides without moving the plate.

Joe Guzman, I have a quick question. I changed the spark plugs and I unplugged the throttle body to clean on my ‘08 Sienna, now the car doesn’t even idle. It runs for 5 seconds then shuts off. Do I have to reset and relearn the throttle body?

My dealer wanted to change the throttle body (500$ approx) as the clean up you showed did the job. Obviously dealers don't like cleaning jobs. :-/ Thanks

I’m in New York and I was able to pick up an aerosol can of throttle body cleaner from my local advanced. Thanks for the video!

Eric, newer cars with electronic throttle you have to use a slightly different technique since there is no manual linkage to open the throttle. I was also told if you manually open up these throttles, you can screw up the computer. You need a helper and with the ignition on on (car not running), have them press their foot on the accelerator. This will open up the butterfly.

for cars with no throttle cable, you must disconnect the battery before doing this and then after cleaning, wait 30 minutes so the spray can dry up so the engine wont be hard to start

With the exceptions that you have mentioned. Throttle Body Cleaner and MAF Sensor Cleaners are just expensive gimmicks. Simply use a good quality Non-Chlorinated Brake Cleaner. Best to do on a warm day and a warm (not hot) engine...since residues and gums, oil and carbon tend to be somewhat looser and easier to remove. A Toothbrush (not wire) and some Q-Tips also helps. I use a fresh rag too...after each and every spray down while cleaning. My rule of thumb is that it must be something that dries fast and leaves no residues...Brake Cleaner fits the bill very well! Common Sense is never out of Style!!!

Did this with my Saab 9-3 and then I just had to reset the codes afterward and so far so good. It’s almost hard to believe such a simple procedure can take your car from a dud to a stud.

Couldn't start it afterwards. The clear flood mode thingy worked for me. Thanks for tip!

These old videos of ETCG are kinda weird...in a good way. He’s the same guy, but the quality is not nearly as good as it is these days. Glad he’s still around!

Eric, I also use a tooth brush to reach into the throttle body and scrub the carbon loose..

if your car uses an electronic accelerator, after cleaning, sometimes you have to use a scan and make the adjust. this process can also create reading problems with some sensors. I usually clean the throttle with the engine working, always accelerating and throwing the cleaner, it helps to clean all the system.

I sure wouldn't have thunk it was so easy. Not bad at all. Thanks. I'm going to go look at mine and see if I can do anything for/to it.

Doesnt matter if a lot goes through, sea foam works great. You can also keep the vehicle idling about 1500 rmps while spraying into the throttle body.

If the commercial spray cleaners are not available, use lacquer thinner, works great on gum gunk. Used it for years on my Carb. aspirated cars.

S197 GT throttle bodies are can cause hesitation and crappy throttle response when they get even a little dirty. I just take mine off and cover the sensors with small balloons. CRC throttle body cleaner works well for me. I like your videos

I normally clean the MAF at the same time. Mind you I use MAF cleaner because everyone warns not to use throttle cleaner, and I don't really want to prove them right.
