I'd say my biggest tip is just that comparison kills. Crafting is very personal, and everyone picks up different things at different rates. I've been knitting for years, and I feel like I'm constantly learning new things and improving.

Absolutely. I've been in a rut lately sbecause I've been knitting for a long time and since people picked up new hobbies during the pandemic, I've been in a rut since seeing everyone's beautiful creations and how quickly they picked it up. Comparison makes me uninspired.

My tip is to not stress or fret about having to unravel a large section of knitting after you've found a mistake. The process of knitting is so beneficial to your well-being it doesn't matter if you're reknitting a section or just moving along with no mistakes. Taking the time to get it right makes it wonderful when you finish the garment.

I recently posted a project that was giving me a bit of trouble and that I was having to rip it back a few times, you won't believe how many people told me not to worry about it and move forward. No thanks, I'm quite sure that I'll get it and be much happier with the result, and I'll learn something in the process. I honestly don't know how you learn if you don't fix your mistakes.

Tips from someone who has knit and crocheted for 8ish years: • Do not fear new things! Try anything and everything. If you mess up, all you've lost is time, and you have plenty more of it. You can always take apart what you made and start over, or just go back some and fix it! • Stretch your hands often. • The way you're sitting can also greatly effect your tension and speed. Try different chairs to see which way feels best for you! • Do not feel bad about your materials. I fell for thinking that my projects weren't as good as other people's because my yarn or needles weren't as expensive and exclusive as theirs. If you like how your materials feel, and they work for what you're making, then nothing else matters. I've made a sweater for $300+ in yarn cost alone before and it was so annoying and fluffy I took it apart. Currently I'm knitting a sweater with roughly $10 of acrylic yarn and I think it's one of the best things I've ever made. • If you are going to knit things as gifts for people, PLEASE take into consideration their lifestyle. Not everyone wants to hand wash a wool sweater, or they might just be forgetful and do it anyways and ruin it. Think about what colors and styles they truly like, and what would really be useful to them. I've knit quite a few things for people as gifts and they either don't use them, or wash them and ruin them 🥲 So save yourself the heartbreak! A hand made acrylic hat is just as wonderful as an angora lace sweater. Except if someone machine washes the acrylic hat, you won't sob.

Great tips! Here’s another… Especially if you are knitting a bulkier yarn (or 2 yarns held together) in the round on interchangeable needles, you can go down a size or two in needle size on the left hand needle. The right hand, working-yarn needle is the one that determines gauge. By having the left hand needle smaller the yarn slides off easier, the right needle enters the stitches more easily, and your knitting picks up speed. (This doesn’t work with straight needles as you need to switch your needles back and forth with your work.)

starting with wooden or bamboo needles instead of metal or plastic could be good too! when I started teaching one of my sisters how to knit, she struggled with the metal needles as the stitches would just fly off, I feel like wooden or bamboo needles are less slippery, and so easier to use for beginners. hope this helps for any beginners out there
@Staticpulse29
@Staticpulse29 2 жыл бұрын
Along this same idea, choosing the right material for the type of needles you have. For example, acrylic yarn tends to drag on plastic or wooden needles, so you may need to work on a set of metal needles. Or cotton can drag on a plastic set of needles, so you might need wood instead

The lovely woman who taught me to knit (40 years ago!!) give me a great piece of advice. Buy the best you can afford- yarn, needles, etc. it will save you money in the long run. I always knit with wool or natural fibers. There are great affordable options out there. DROPs yarn is great and about the same price as acrylic and my favorite yarn -Jamison and Smith is 100% Shetland wool and is also priced very well. I still have sweaters I knit with it that are 30 years old! You will be happier with your project in the long run if you love your yarn and enjoy the process.

My biggest tip is that you don’t need to splurge on notions and equipment. Fiber art equipment gets expensive FAST. Making your own is just as valid, much cheaper, and better for the environment. A large gauge needle can help wind the same center-pull ball that a $50 winder can. Scrap yarn tied into a slip knot can do the exact same job as a $20 5-pack of shiny stitch markers with pretty little charms. It’s better to put that money into better needles and yarn.

I've been knitting for 10 years and I didn't even think about starting a new ball on a new row! For me, the biggest tip I've learned is to purchase yarn that is suitable for the weather you're in. I live in a hotter climate so knitting with warm wool is basically a no-go, but I work with viscose, cotton and merino often because that's perfect and I can actually wear them out without sweating lol

My ultimate tip would be to knit from many different patterns construction wise to learn new techniques! You'll learn much more this way and won't be intimidated by 'difficulty level' of the pattern; and also - it's super helpful if you want to design your own things. Top down raglan sweater is great but where are so so so much more :)

I’ve knit since I was wee (Nan taught me) but I’ve found looking at peoples knitting online has encouraged me to try new things my Nan would have considered too difficult, like fair isle and I might try cables! One of my tips is charity shops usually have needles for cheap and they’re good ones, often a knitter that has passed away, and also I use safety pins as stitch markers which are usually cheaper and multipurpose! Also, I added a crochet hook to my toolbox and that’s been invaluable for picking up stitches

all of these!! I've also had to learn to accept small mistakes in my work that'll happen now and again no matter how experienced or careful I am. at the end of the day nobody will notice them but me, and for some people (me!) being too much of a perfectionist can make the hobby stressful and less enjoyable, which imo misses the point of why I'm knitting in the first place :-)

As someone with a drawer full of half finished projects that I may or may not get back to, don't be afraid to undo those projects and use the yarn for something else you'll finish! I knitted a whole jumper (apart from the neck), tried it on, hated how it looked and didn't touch it for a year and never finished it :') I've now unravelled the stitches of the jumper and using the wool for another project!

Something I have realized about the hole being created when you join a new ball - if you carry the old ball tail with the new ball strand, no hole. I knit a few stitches with both strands, just to get the old ball tail "woven" in a little. Im not sure if this creates problems with that one section being bulky. It could be different depending on yarn but it hasn't been noticeable the handful of times I've done it!
@orangew3988
@orangew3988 2 жыл бұрын
That's deffo something I've used often, but does work better with thinner yarns, where the added bulk is less noticeable. I think the reason Bethany feels this is a problem worth noting (whereas I've never considered it an important thing to consider) is because as she says, she mostly works with bulky yarns. A lot of the examples she shows look at least aran weight, if not chunky or more. I use a lot of 4ply, or dk weight, very rarely heavier, which is why weaving in my ends isn't usually a problem, much less bulk.

I think even for a beginner, it’s great to have a couple of projects on the go, maybe something really simple so you can knit in front of the TV. This keeps your projects fresh so you aren’t working in something more challenging all the time. I like small achievable projects like mittens and socks and shawls that are fun to do, but aren’t a huge commitment. I have also discovered washing and blocking helps the stitches of a finished piece look much nicer, it evens out the stitches. Loved this vid, especially the bit about restricting your time and looking after yourself. There are quite a few folk out there who have problems doing things now as they didn’t do this…….

The importance of the right textured yarn cannot be overstated. The texture you create in the pattern can be obscured if the yarn is also textured. A video on this using two swatches would illustrate the point.

As a newish knitter, I found this really helpful -- thank you!!! I'd love it if you could do a video on how to "repair" dropped stitches and also a tutorial on how to undo a stitch... these two things are what stall me the most if they happen while I'm knitting and it is agonizing to not know how to troubleshoot this.

Some more tips I would add is to try out new techniques in a swatch or small project before using them in large projects and trying out different knitting styles on small swatches/projects to see if they are more comfortable, even, or faster for you. Something that really helped me was trying out different knitting styles like Continental or lever style knitting, different ways of holding the yarn and needles to form the same stitches. Personally, I can knit a lot faster and more comfortably in Continental style for knitting in the round and lever style for knitting flat. I also like having projects going on in each style that I can switch between so I'm using different muscles while knitting. Different knitting styles can affect your gauge, so it's good to stick with the same style throughout a project unless there are parts where the different style makes it easier to work certain rows/rounds or you know your gauge well enough to know that, for example, you want to knit a ribbed hat brim in lever style because it's tighter and a little easier to purl for you, then switch to continental for the stockinette part.

Great video! Also wanted to add on the topic of choosing the right tools - picking your needle size based on gauge (not necessarily what the pattern suggests) is the most important to have the piece turn out the right size!

I think my biggest tip is to try new things. I used to never finish my project because I would just get bored. Sometimes it takes trial and error and maybe some replanning but if I'm bored of a project then I just add something to it. It could be color work, new stitches, ribbing, cables, whatever. For me bored knitting is a project death sentence. I must keep myself on my toes in order to feel motivated. Cables are some of my favorites because they can be really intricate but still make your final design simple if you want. You can just do a couple strategic cables, or go nuts with a bunch of complicated cables. Its all about having fun.

TIP: Select patterns and colors for garments that you would also happily buy if you saw it at a store. I've made the mistake too many times of knitting garments with yarn just because I had it on hand. Then when I was finished, it wasn't something that I was really in to wearing. It's great to use yarn you already have but given the time it takes to knit a sweater, you really want to make sure it's something you'll genuinely love wearing.

My tip is to have fun with your knitting. If it isn't fun or pleasurable for you, then you are less likely to stick with it. This can mean putting on a TV show or podcast you adore, enjoying a cup of tea or a glass of wine while you work, and, most importantly, picking projects and materials that you really want to create and use.

Budget-friendly yarn can be made to feel very luxurious by, either taking off the label , dipping it gently in a bath of liquid fabric softener diluted with appropriate amount of warmish water, being allowed to soak for about 30 minutes and removed, hung on a hook, allowed to drip dry.... Or, after your project has been made, give your project a warmer than- I-said-before bath with liquid fabric softener in it, give it a gentle rinse and very cold water, and if possible -check the fibers that are in your yarn, and whether they are washable wool or other fibers - tumble it in a dryer on permanent press for 10 to 15 minutes and then switch it to air fluff. Acrylic and nylon will be fine ; wash-n-wear wool types -- if the label says so,will also be fine unless it tells you to lay it out on towels or a rack. The latter ones are actually pretty darn soft as is, and don't need a spa day at all. Just think of cheap yarn as fuzzy / frizzy or chemically damaged hair that needs to be conditioned before you style it. Note that depending upon whether the yarn already feels a little squeaky because it's got atomized machine oil in it (why do you think they call the textiles disease Brown Lung: it's from breathing machine oil and fiber fluff in the air at the factory) you may need to give it a grease removing dish detergent type "soap" 'n' water bath in lukewarm temperature. Rinse well. By the way, rinsing well is done by just squishing the water in and out of it, giving it a quarter turn doing the same until you make it three more times around, changing the water out if you need to --you absolutely cannot swish or move the yarn around very much... it will come unraveled from its ball or skein shape. You cannot obviously do this with a tightly-wound ball but you have made yourself.

From a knitter who has been knitting for almost 40 years off and on. Fight hand, wrist and shoulder fatigue by getting and using circular needles. They also helps when you can move your knitting to the cable when you stop, so that you don’t get a permanent bump in the stitches that have sit longer then the rest on the needles. Otherwise it’s best to slip your work to a smaller size needle if it’s going to sit for a bit, so that you don’t get stitches that are different from the others.

I love your sweater! Is there a pattern you used for it?? Everyone has a different gauge they naturally work at. So even when a pattern recommends using size 8 needles, I often have to use size 4 to obtain the right gauge (I'm a super loose knitter). Gauge is king! Knit to that, even if you have to knit several swatches beforehand. It will save so much time and save you the lumpy, huge projects that fit no one. It's ok to personalize your craft along certain lines. I love Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmerman

I knit a lot of garments using thinner yarn like one strand of fingering and one strand of silk mohair/Alpaca Silk and when I need to join yarn I no longer weave in ends. The silk mohair I just hold double for 10 to 15 stitches and then let go of the old yarn. After blocking I just cut the ends. The fingering I either spit splice if its non superwash and otherwise I do magic knot. I assume this technique wouldn't work for heavier yarns as it may end up a little bulky, but for these yarns you don't see the join at all and don't have ends to weave in at the end.

When joining yarn...use a fisherman's knot...then, you can join the skein wherever you please. Also, you won't have to weave anything in. You will have a small knot; just tuck it in on the wrong side. For beginners: it was an epiphany to me, when I noticed the difference between a knit stitch (little "v") and a purl stitch (little bump)...then I no longer counted stitches. And I could see the patterns forming as I knitted and I could see where I made mistakes.

With circular needles, which cord length do you choose? I’ve noticed with a number of patterns, the needle size is specified but not the cord length 😵‍💫 If it helps, I am wanting to knit a sweater on 7mm needles
@xanthiasmile
@xanthiasmile 2 жыл бұрын
For that, try and note what the wraps per inch (wpi) of your yarn is before starting! If your cord is too short, and your yarn is fairly chunky, you'll run into your stitches crowding themselves off the needles. WPI is sometimes mentioned on the label, or website listing, but it's easy enough to test during your swatching.

Hi, Have you ever tried knitting with a strand of mohair added to the petite wool by we are knitters? I'm a relatively new knitter and I want to try adding mohair to something I make but I mostly have chunkier yarns on hand. Can you only add a strand of mohair to thinner yarns? I love how your sweater looks.
@feelssewclothes
@feelssewclothes 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely can! I haven't done this with that specific yarn but with one of the same weight.
@nadinecamara5123
@nadinecamara5123 2 жыл бұрын
Very importantly- pay attention to the way you wash your knitted items. I don't mean just reading the label on the wool but if you are adding a strand of mohair, particularly, then definitely wash by just soaking the garment in a weak solution of baby shampoo and cold water. Don't squeeze, let it drain and rinse gently in fresh cold water to which some hair conditioner has been added. Again let it drain rather than squeeze, otherwise squeeze gently in a thick towel and lay out flat, changing towels when necessary. Seems like a hack but it has saved many a garment for me. (Unless you want it felted and three sizes smaller 😉)

I really need help with this. I learnt not long ago how to knit, about let’s say 6/7 months and I cannot, for the life of me, do a knit stitch. I keep doing the manoeuvre again and looking up 100s of tutorials, they always turn out looking like a purl stick. How do I fix this and improve it??
@beepbopboop3221

What is your knitting style? I notice you hold the right needle with your pinky. Is that due to your wrist issue? (I get this. Crochet bothers my wrist, but knitting doesn't for some reason.) I hold mine with the first 2 fingers and thumb, and yarn is wrapped around my ring finger. I can't keep the end of the yarn over the index finger very well, so I can't flick. I move my whole hand. It's probably slower, but that's what I do.

Hi! I’m just starting to knit, and a problem I have is the choice of yarn. I’m vegan, so using real wool (even with all of the mentioned benefits) is difficult for me. Cotton is also a 100% natural fibre, but cotton yarn tends to be thinner, while most cardigan and sweater patterns call for a yarn that is a little bit chunkier. That leaves me with acrylic, which I’d rather not use, because it’s really not sustainable. Any tips or insights that might help me?

Question, if you are working on a project where the first 20 rows are all knit stitches, how can you tell which side is right side facing?
@vaflknitter9834
@vaflknitter9834 2 жыл бұрын
Look at your cast on row. With the long tail cast on the loopy side is the right side, the bar or purl side is the wrong side. If you did the knitted or cable cast on, either side can be the right side.

You could also put a removable stitch marker (or a paperclip, or some scrap yarn, etc) in the face of the right side of the cloth after a few rows. Also comes in handy when working a pattern that has shaping on garter stitch for me.
