All joking aside, cats really is a fantastic example as to why sometimes some things just don't translate to other mediums without adapting the ever-loving crap out of it to the point where it's barely recognizable. Like, how do you adapt something that's basically just a bunch of songs and dance sequences that is designed specifically to be on a real physical stage? It's like making a 100% faithful movie adaptation of the second half of the Nutcracker.

This is something that especially annoys me with animated films. Rarely do you get professional voice actors voicing the big roles in films anymore; instead you get a bunch of celebrities who are still trendy in said big roles because voice acting is seen as an easy gig. Instead of focusing on the animation, the characters or the story, more emphasis is placed on these A-list stars doing whatever which is problematic. Also it does voice actors out of a job. I feel I'm one of the few who gets annoyed by this and I'm not even a voice actor but still.

The Lesson Of The Movie: costumes, sets, & effects that work for a Broadway production do NOT work for a movie. Yeeeeeeesh. Saber, it doesn't have a plot because the musical's based on T.S. Eliot's poetry. All the lyrics are from his poems. That's it. Again, works on Broadway and in a theatre production, NOT in film. At least, not the way it's done in this movie. If they'd done this as full animation like Pixar or even Dreamworks, it'd likely work.

The show is primarily a dance show and I have a couple of books on the topic with behind the scenes information. Most of the story is told through choreography and there are running themes throughout the show just like in the poetry anthology. It worked fine when they filmed the stage version as if it were a live show, just with closeups and the camera being on stage with the actors. It does have a plot that isn't difficult to understand, it's just not as complex as you would think. The movie took all of the plot that was there and tossed it out the window and overexplained it.

I think it's okay for movies to be plot-less. Who's to say that a movie can't be alternative like that? Artsy? With theatre, people are more prepared to see something unusual. People go in with a broader mindset. With movies, people like it safe. They want a clean narrative, because that's what hollywood and mainstream movies have solidified for decades. But a movie can also be an artistic or poetic experience- audiences just need to stop being so terrified of the unusual. Movies are just visual art... that is the dictionary definition... who's to say it HAS to be a structured narrative..

this movie would honestly have worked better as a traditionally animated movie with actual cat characters i also feel like this movie was a little rushed because the studio wanted to get it out before the end of the decade edit: i also believe the live action may have worked (visually) if they had not tried so hard to replicate the play. if they had givin the cats more animalistic features instead of looking like a horrible homemade fursuit, like giving snouts, paws (or paw like hands), it would be less of a visual disaster. and for the story.. well cats just doesnt really have a plot. it doesnt translate well into film, and the movie just overall feels jumbled.

There's no plot, the human animal hybrids on screen are doing some lewd shit that no man should see, and it was right around the time that Rebel Wilson's cat began spreading eagle while eating cockroach people that I knew my mind may never return from the journey this movie was taking me on. There are some characters in this movie that simply do not care to be in the movie, belting out terrible songs and appearing for maybe two minutes before just leaving? Jason DeRulo has one song at the beginning then dips, Taylor Swift sprays sex dust on the abominations beneath her for three minutes tops before peacing out, and the main cat Veronica simply looks confused throughout the proceeding. That makes sense as so did I. Then there are the actors who are WAY TOO INTO THEIR ROLES. Ian McKellen at one point is drinking cream with his tongue alone in a closet and I don't think it was part of the movie originally. Jennifer Hudson is legit fantastic but her face is stapled onto something that Lovecraft thought of on his deathbed but never transcribed to the written page. The Cats themselves were not meant for the world of man, and I heard in an earlier report that some of the main Cats had been re-jiggered in the effects room to look better. This is true, but they didn't do this with the supporting Cats, which makes them stand out all the more against their slightly revised cousins. When you see these fucking things switch between acting like people and acting like Cats, you'll think you mistakenly read a page of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis (roughly translated "The Book Of The Dead") There are numerous times throughout the movie where I simply could not stop laughing. Just I was unable to stop, in a combination of hilarity and madness. I heard one cat was supposed to have a bigger role but because his song was racist in the original play, he instead is delegated to being played by an old man leering from behind a pole on a boat, doing Idris Elba's bidding while hiding his erection. I simply could not stop laughing at this, I could not stop laughing at the Cats who were "popping and locking" during the Jellicat competition, and I could not stop laughing when James Corden's Cat looms in an alleyway like a drunken murderer in the night before he starts singing about eating fecal matter out of trash cans. Cats is something that cost $300 Million Dollars and I have no idea HOW because there are two locales that all the Cats are stuck in: a big empty theater and a boat. No man should see what I have seen, if you are thinking of seeing this movie intoxicated, please do not as you will most likely lose your mind. What makes this all the stranger is that there is simply no plot. I guess that's a part of the play but it makes the proceedings seem all the more insane as characters simply wander in and out of the story, never to be seen again, leaving their horror within the minds of the audience. Cats should be seen and it should not be seen. It is the test of our time, the mettle of men, and is a gauge to see if you can continue to grasp your sense of reality. It is both a blessing and a curse. A warning to countless generations untold. A nightmare.

Well... that puts a whole new meaning to "cats don't dance." All jokes aside, I'm going to tell you the truth about my thoughts on this film, from the first moment I heard about it. I was coming home with my aunt, uncle, and sister from the 2018 Pageant of the Masters show when the topic came to Broadway musicals. I had just gotten into Broadway because my sister loves musicals, and my aunt and uncle love everything art and music (explains why we were at Pageant of the masters), and I had thought I should probably attend some theater, part because of pressure, partly out of curiosity (I became hooked real quick). As we had gone to see the revival of Cats in theater earlier that year, my aunt mentioned that there was going to be a CGI movie adaptation of it coming out that would include Taylor Swift as well as a whole bunch of other contemporary actors. When I first heard this, I was unimpressed. I couldn't imagine what the setting or modern format would be like, and I was sure that the fur effects and dancing would be cheap and not nearly as good as the original stage version. Several months later, I saw the first trailer in theaters. I was pleasantly surprised; what a coincidence that one of what are now my favorite Broadway musicals had a film version! It wasn't until a few minutes into the movie that I realized that that was the movie my aunt was talking about. I was shocked! The visuals weren't nearly as bad as I had first pictured in my head, and neither was the singing nor the acting. I KNEW I was going to have to take my aunt and uncle to see it. When the second trailer came around, I watched it and the first trailer as well as many reaction videos, only to see that just about everyone hated it, and for one particular reason: the fact that the cats had human faces, limbs, and fingers. All I could think was, "WHY???" The visuals, in my original, uninfluenced opinion were absolutely breathtaking, and the actors were so expressive. During my viewing spree for Cats, though, I came across two comments who said that they had no problem with the cats' design. I responded to both of them in agreement and one replied back saying that they were happy they weren't the only one. I went to see the movie this afternoon with my aunt and uncle. I remember the things they said the days leading up to our planned viewing date: "Is it bad? I heard some critics gave it pretty negative reviews" or something along those lines. I showed them the trailers and by the end -- I kid you not -- my aunt was in tears and my uncle was clapping. This was mainly because Grizabella has always been my aunt's absolute all-time favorite character from any musical, and Memory was her all time favorite musical song (it always brought her to tears), but I was yet to see what they thought of the actual movie in its entirety. The movie theater was mostly empty, and the few people that were there were mostly older people who were friends or couples, but as they walked out of the theater, I heard them saying mostly positive things about the movie. As Memory finished, I could hear a few people getting choked up. When I looked around the theater, I couldn't find a single person who wasn't wiping their eyes with a tissue or their fingers (including my aunt and uncle). As we walked out of the movie theater, they too had mostly good things to say about it. Of course there were some things they thought could have been changed or improved; they were skeptical about if the dancing moves were really done by the actors or if they had to do some rotoscoping or other filming trick to do it. But they told me they really liked the background visuals and they way the actors portrayed each of their characters. I myself loved every last bit of the film (well, I guess there are a few jokes I could have done without, but it was still brilliant). As I described it to my sister who couldn't come, it was just as good as the play, just in a different aesthetic and with an original song that really spiced it up. I'm sorry most of you were disturbed by the cats' designs and unable to enjoy the movie. I'm legitimately curious, though, what makes the fact that these cats are humanoid disturbing to you? I'd really be interested to know, because I've never been freaked out by something that looked almost human but wasn't.

Literally all the animators had to do was make the fur on the characters heads mimic human hairstyles and the ears wouldn't have been such a big deal. In fact, all the fur on the characters body was too short that the only cat design that loom halfway decent are the cats with the fur coats.

@@dance_ofThaDEAD They'd also have to get rid of human faces and replace them with masks/CGI/whatever. Anthropomorphic animals with human faces just never work and only give viewers that strong sense of uncanny valley.

I know this is just a joke but tbh its a half good idea. Perhaps not "fursuits", but actual good costumes for the body and really good makeup or at least, if they REALLY wanted to add the CGI for whatever reason, they couldve added more cat like facial features (eg. Cat nose and slightly enlarge the ears to not look so awkward on the head)
