I would add a few suggestions: 1) Don’t trust the punch that could rattle out or even safety bars. Always have a large 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 pressure treated one to 3 foot piece of lumber with bright coat of red or orange paint with a section of old rope or flatbed flat strap nail to it. It’s easily visible and place it between the arms and hydraulic rams in case it loses pressure. 2) always keep your filter in the box until you’re ready to grab it and put it on. Don’t set it down where you could capture dirt and foreign objects in it. 3) always look for a hydraulic line shut off and understand which lines are pressurized. If there’s a shut off and you do turn it off, make sure you turn it back on. Whoever shuts it off is responsible for turning it back on including mechanics because if you try to run your PTO pump dry, you can blow seals and equipment. 4) I like using a clean concrete mix bucket for capturing any spilled oil but make sure that when you take the old filter off, you inspect and wipe the underside of the filter housing before putting the new one on. All of this sounds overtly unnecessary but it literally takes only an extra 30 seconds or so and saves the life of hydraulic equipment. I’m not a mechanic but grew up around a diesel mechanic as an assistant for 30+ years. FYI, before you throw out that old filter, check KZbin here for projects were after cleaning the old filters, you can turn them into shop mugs. Upcycle, Revycle, or repurpose.

Shouldn't the fluid be changed also?

Do you fill the filter with hydraulic fluid before hand before putting it on? or does it fill up when started?

They're definitely not the easiest filters to get to, that's for sure. How has the machine been treating you thus far with landscaping?
