You are absolutely correct. These Content creator’s spent years talking about how fabulous LV monogram or Gucci Monogram, etc being the best thing since sliced bread. They build up these luxury brands and logo mania and once a lot of their followers start obtaining the actual things that they felt were the cream of crop. Now all of a sudden it’s cheap or outdated, etc. and I definitely feel a lot of it has to do with women of color (AKA BLACK) now obtaining a lot of these things that was once upon a time supposed to be out of our reach. I think it’s more so the TYPE of black woman though. There’s a reason that Hermes looks elegant on black women like Lori Harvey and Savannah James, but trashy on Cardi B and Ari Fletcher for example. Money does not automatically equal classiness and elegance. These brands don’t want to be affiliated with ghetto, hood-fabulous ratchetry PERIOD regardless of race. Unfortunately, many of these celebs and influencers have run designer brands and logos into the ground to the point that it’s tacky. Logo mania has always been tacky though, imo 🤷🏽♀️

@Breeyon my thing is, I've never been one for logos. I hated the monogram trend and logos and brightly decorated bags are just not my thing. Imagine my surprise at seeing "quiet luxury" "quiet wealth" "old money aesthetics" getting around for the type bags of bags I carry. Was over here scratching my head because I'm not carrying my logo less bags because of classism (let's be honest, a lot of this has to do with a specific set of folks who were not liking the fact that these "luxury" bags were becoming more accessible and certain "undesirables" *cough* ghetto *cough* were getting their hands on them.) Now, it's "let's carry the iykyk bags without logos on them" to set themselves a part. Meanwhile this entire time, I was carring these bags because that was my style. Simply and sleek looking paired with simple t shirt, jeans, and some vans.

@djlivvy46 Жыл бұрын

@oui_si917 Жыл бұрын
Spot on. The appeal of luxury is its exclusivity. The whole point of luxury is that it's "hard to get into." Why do we think Hermes gatekeeps their Birkins so hard and Chanel's handbags are probably going to rival the cost of a small home at some point? If the masses can get their hands on all those items, it's no longer exclusive, no longer special, no longer luxury. It's Target at that point. I love Target by the way - nothing wrong with their products but they're not luxury. So yes people are upset that the more folks can gain access by whatever means, the more luxury brands and gatekeepers will move the goalposts to ensure that luxury remains exclusive. But ironically the appeal of exclusivity - the undercurrent of classism - is probably what makes the luxury product appealing in the first place.

However, people can complain all they want to about designer handbags whether you are wealthy or poor or it old money or new money. Buy what you love, give to the poor, be kind and courteous to others, be forgiving, don't lie, don't steal, don't think and behave like you are better that the poor person on the streets, stop being racist and hateful and be a decent human being. Material things at the end of the day means nothing. Your heart is what matters. Classism is thinking you are better than others. Well that is not good and you should be careful. except that just proves that black people and blackness is the problem. Why are you trying to encroach upon and appropriate another races culture? Why do you feel entitled to the idea that certain races need to relinquish their cultures to black people, just so they can hijack and falsely claim it as their own? especially considering that black people are ultra sensitive, exclusionary, racist, and hostile when another race enters black spaces or cultures. the reason you were "excluded" is because its not your culture. unpack the black supremacist notion that everything belongs to (and has to be about) black people. And unpack your hypocrisy that is rooted in your blackness. deconstructing you, it seems that you are bothered by "old money" because it comes from white culture. And everything that surrounds "old money culture": clothes, fashion, aesthetics, lifestyles, activities, values, etc comes from white people. Which dismantles many narratives that many POC may have, but wont assume for you. It also seems that you are bothered that a trend that is getting popular that has nothing to do with black people. Black people like to posture themselves as a people that started everything (your own comment eludes to this narrative), so it makes you insecure to see a culture become trendy that has nothing to do with blackness or black people.

But, more and more people seem to have an unhealthy fixation on appearing to be upper class-- at least on social.

This video has really made me think and reflect on my own personal views on certain luxury items. I didn’t know this was a “thing” but everything you’ve explained makes total sense. People need to focus on themselves and what they want (and can/cannot afford) instead of measuring their success against their ability to buy something that their neighbor can’t.

This was such a good video and yeah it’s so annoying seeing the amount of influencers pivoting into making “how to dress Classy” videos and then almost always using the word tacky in it. And in top of that they always talk about “well a man wouldn’t like this type of amount”… like really… why are we dressing for other people 😑😑😑 It just makes me want to block them overall b/c how dense can you be

I agree with you on some many points. It’s actually pretty pathetic that people want to feel “ Special “ this badly. First it was the Neverfull. I saw a youtuber once say it was low class. Not that they disliked the bag because of materials or otherwise but because it is “cheap”. I also think the black girl luxury trend and accessibility has alot to with this also. This is all so stupid and pointless. I can’t wait till we move on to something else. The luxury community online isn’t even enjoyable any more.

Does anyone else think that ‘shopping luxury’, quiet or loud, is the biggest trick at play here? ‘Shopping quality’ isn’t cheap, but it’s a hell of a lot more affordable than luxury shopping. Flexing is a toxic cycle of not feeling good enough, you can only break it by learning that no one really cares what you are wearing/ carrying. It all feels like a scam.

I used to work high end retail in the early 2000s. Even then, we could tell who was new money and had something to prove. You could put together the best outfit for an event and they would literally ask for logos in slightly hushed embarrassed tones. Thats because they had people to impress. I am not going to say that wealth whispers.... BUT I will say that there is more of a focus on quality and sometimes a noticeable aesthetic more than being logo heavy. That being said, you don't have to have a closet full of THE ROW. Its more about not looking like a walking billboard ad.

It always has been. Old money is literally THE mark of class conflict, and this has always been apparent in countries other than the US as most have some history with this divide.

As a person who doesn’t buy things to feel superior or to show off wealth it’s so weird that everyone (influencers) is seizing on this term and showing us that they’re not into fashion design whatsoever and only ever chose products to look rich. That’s so sad. I know this mentality has been around since the dawn of civilization but it makes me feel bad for people who really attach their self worth to whether or not other people THINK they’re rich. The bigger irony is all of the US was subject to this snobbery by Europeans, and fashion and custom and manners were all just mechanisms for people to alienate and exclude people from things. Then some generations passed and people wanna act like they “old money” now as if if that’s a virtue. The only thing I’m ever going to flex is the fact that IDGAF what anyone else thinks bc I love my style and that’s that. Edit to add: I’m also old enough to have been through this cycle a few times albeit without social media algorithms favoring the use of terminology like quiet luxury. Every time logos fall out of favor there’s some segment of people who start hating on it like it’s tacky, whether it’s because they’re classist, racist, or just wannabe trend setters. There’s always an undertone of classism, as you point out. As hip hop got more commercial throughout the 90s there were tinges of this kind of hate too. I couldn’t afford luxury items back then but I loved the aesthetic. And I never once was tempted to be ashamed to rock flashy things if that’s what I felt like that day. The more people looked down on it the more I enjoyed making them feel uncomfortable. I’m not ashamed of where I came from I’m proud. So honestly, f*ck these people who want to make anyone feel bad, whether it’s about money or even if it’s just being “dated.” Personal style is timeless. Everyone just do you.

I mean, I've been enjoying luxury/fine quality garments for decades without logos. No one knew what it was unless they asked. All of a sudden it's a "fad". But, those who are jumping on it as a trend, will never wear it well because they don't really know quality. - I know that sounds elitist, and for that I'm sorry. Just wear and do what you want. 💖
@ssoomee Жыл бұрын
I also think the quiet luxury trend is being pushed because of a fear from luxury customers of being targeted by thieves in these times of stratifying inflation and economic stagnation. I’ve definitely read several stories of people wearing obviously luxurious goods but then having those things returned to them because the robbers realised they were fake and couldn’t be sold for the value they wanted 👀

Didn’t watch the entire video as yet. The title caught my attention, because I love watching KZbin videos and all this quiet luxury was grinding my gears. How are they not realizing that a lot of people were not financially able to make day to day purchases much less luxury purchase and the fact that some people are now financially secured enough to make luxury purchases means they can spend their money and whatever they like.( you touched on this)

Honestly everyone is trying to be something... and the beginning of it is always fake it till you make it. I dye my hair blonde but I'm not currently naturally blonde... It took me a long time to switch my mindset and be: I like the way I look blonde vs I want others to "see" me as a blonde. So why calling out others for pretending or trying to fit in... We all do it to a lesser or more extent. Not most people are truly true to themselves... Yes lots of us are working on it but we're working on it not by calling others out specially since most of us are coming from there. Now that's a different subject from classism or elitism which I most definitely do my best efforts not to subscribe to.
@Cheerface100 Жыл бұрын
I agree with every single point made. 👏🏾 I personally have always been a quiet luxury woman but not necessarily with the current “quiet luxury mindset” it was. Always unintentional for me. I’ve never worn a designer item with logos or easily identifiable because 1. It’s just not my style. 2. At one point in my life I couldn’t afford for it to be my style even if I wanted it to. 😂 I’ve always just dressed stylish and then when I started to make money I continued with understated luxury because technically that’s what I was used to plain. Nice. Clothes. 😂

Quiet Luxury at it's core is about not being a Billionaire's Free Advertising. You dont have to be Old Money to be Low/No Branding. HOWEVER "Luxury" Is, Aways has been, and always will be Classist/Eleatist. The rising trend of Quiet Luxury has less to do with: A Handbag is Not An Identity, and more to with: We Aint With That Wannabe Trash, from Companies and Clents alike. Spectacular Video 😎☕💋

I am former old money. I agree-get value out of your stuff. Most clothing brands do a crap job on their stitching - look at the serge for confirmation. They often get the tension wrong. I mostly buy from thrift and consignment shops. Buy what you like! Don't mind trends. But most importantly, what is UP with not being able to find jewel-toned clothing in the west? EVERYONE looks good in it, but all the dyes we get are muted. It's more expensive to make and with recession and all, I get it but we've NEVER had it.

Great video. You are absolutely right. Brands were built up and now that more people have access to those items/brands it’s like how can I separate myself from the masses and be more exclusive? Quiet luxury! That’s it. True old money is problematic. New money is money. Those people worked hard it wasn’t passed down or inherited. Isn’t that the American dream? People should dress how they want regardless of your money. As always people will continue to find ways to separate themselves.
@nikki6599 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think you all need to get a freaking grip. Far more problematic than the non-problem of what a social media personality says is the latest best and hottest thing, is anyone who consumes such media and feels personally attacked by a stranger they will never meet saying the it-bag of two years ago is now out and totally passe. That is simply the nature of trends and fashion. What an exercise in utter futility it is to concern ones self with the fact that those who can afford to do so, perpetually seek ways to distinguish themselves from those with less. My blunt advice: get over it and enjoy expressing yourself outwardly in whatever way gives you joy.

I think it’s just your algorithm that thinks affordable quiet luxury is trending when it’s not. The Row, Old Celine, new new Bottega, Khaite and Brunello are trending in mainstream fashion media. That plastic BEIS tote from that influencer most definitely is not quiet luxury since it’s made of plastic, which was her first mistake.

You make some really cogent points! New subscriber here 😊I do think the logo mania just caused such a complete saturation that I know I got sick of it. Crime in my area has recently increased, so I also don’t want to broadcast anything when I have to go into the office. I totally do agree with all of your points, but for me it’s just the swing of the fashion pendulum. Big bags give way to micro bags, and back again. Loud bags are shunned in favor of minimalist bags, and I’m sure it will swing back again.
@georgetteconstant9050 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, fit is perhaps the most important thing. Lots of people don't understand what fits them. A full length mirror helps, and having a tailor or seamstress you trust is second to none. They can help educate you on what to look for. If one has doubts if a new item of clothing fits, take it to the tailor and ask. Then decide if it fits (keep it) or if it is worth alteration, (pay for that and have a great fitting item) or opt to return it. The item should be of good quality such as a major brand or department store brand, to make it worth alteration. Recognizing fabric content and construction in general, all this apart from the price of the item, is an education that will keep paying. Good fit is the cornerstone to style.

To men luxury has always been about fine quality matériels, craftsmanship and experience. The largest fashion houses have taken a nose dive but there are new up and coming fashion houses that have embraced the old luxury ways and the quality is superb and way above that of chanel, Dior and Gucci. If I were to invest in those three brands today, id buy vintage. The quality of vintage is far above the current.
