I think it was 2001 I was teaching someone to drive stick in the parking lot of the mall. I believe it was either closed then or already having problems. The churches were there for awhile. I can't even remember what that place looked like when it was open as a mall. Except for those wide open sitting areas and generic mall sculpture artwork. Have you ever been to Severance Mall, before it became what it is today? Such an interesting place beyond the now outside mall, that used to be an inside mall. There's a huge fountain that's been moved more than once, (don't quote me on that, for sure at least once.) The property used to be the home of John Severance and I think the fountain was located somewhere else when it was his. The indoor fountain was brick red ceramic tiles. It was required stop when I was kid. I can't remember if they removed the fountain for Christmas or built over it, hiding it, but for some reason I remember my mom saying they removed the fountain. I also remember not seeing it completely, and then they'd bring it back. Such a weird thing. I remember the Woolworth's, the Gold Circle, Kay Bee Higbees, Gray Druq? The bowling alley. 2 movie theaters. The only picture of the fountain I could find and it's a partial, is on this page with some history and links. clevelandhistorical.org/items/show/197

Malls are not quite dead; in upscale neighborhoods, and in some more traditional rural areas( I live in one) they're still hanging on but for how long I can only guess. A factor that is never mentioned is the declining birthrate- when toys- r-us went under they attributed that as a main reason for their failure-- their customer base was shrinking in size.

Great video---I'm glad you posted it. It makes me so sad when I see these dead, empty malls. It reminds me of happier times. It's like time has moved on and these are unrecognized monuments of a time gone by. It's kinda creepy too as if civilization has left the earth or something. So many of us (of a certain age) remember that malls were THE place for meeting up with friends, hanging out, shopping, etc. Another part of my life that we'll never see again.

I don't know if I mentioned it in any of my Comments for the Dead Mall Series, but I remarked to myself, when visiting and revisiting those fascinating videos, that some of the malls apparently closed down after their final Christmas seasons, with decorations still on the floors or tucked away in defunct stores and storage rooms. It always gave me a pang, since that's my favorite holiday season. (Imagine what I felt looking at the huge Christmas tree and other decorations in your latest entry into the series! According to Wikipedia, this mall was built by Jacobs, Visconi, and Jacobs. From what I could find, this is the same Jacobs that built the now closed Jamestown Mall and the almost dead Chesterfield Mall in St. Louis. From the photos I've seen of Jamestown and what I remember about Chesterfield before a late 90s/early 2000s renovation, this mall seems to have several similar features to those malls, including the interior architecture, the sunken seating areas, plants, and the fountains with the stainless steel sculptures in them.
