I have started making my top and bottom borders one-half to one inch wider than the side borders to eliminate the stress factor in quilting neatly to the very top and bottom edges, and with dealing with the pins on the leaders. After the quilt is off the frame, I just cut off the extra bit of border to make it the same width as side borders. Works great for me on my mini-arm machine on an old Hinterberg frame.

Thank you Betsy Lou! That's what I did on my home machine to make quilting easier, but fell out of the habit when I began longarm quilting. I guess wider borders might just come back in style!

Leah, what is the criteria you use to decide whether to attach the quilt to the bottom leader cloth or just let it hang and use the plastic clamps?

I found it worked better to attach the quilt to the bottom leader cloth when working with pantographs. When I quilt freehand from the front of the machine, I don't have to do it that way because I can keep a closer eye on what is going on with the quilt and if it's shifting or being weird. When quilting from the back, I really needed the extra tension of the leader cloth to be able to trust that the quilt top wasn't shifting and getting pleats and puddles in the middle. So mostly it's down to the type of quilting and where I'm standing - to the front or back of the longarm.

are you going to post a tutorial on using the pantos on the q zone frame with a sewing machine without a regulator? I know that is a little specific but just bought the q zone with the 4" pantos and want to make sure i do it correctly. Thank you for all you teach Leah!!

LOL! Yes, that is a bit specific! It's on my list, but I'll probably film that once I move my 15-inch longarm to this frame. The main reason being the limit of space in the arm of the machine and it's just TOO tight to quilt the 4-inch pantograph designs that I've created.
