Hi Jean I have only ever stitched in the ditch on baby quilts or 'around the world' quilted tote bags. BUT I have the freemason quilting foot and lots of quilting rulers so I'm just going to puck up the courage to have a go at freemotion quilting. I intend to do a table runner and practise on that. 🤞. Dear Jean, glad you had and enjoyed your little vacation. Also nice to see you getting to the quilting part of your beautiful quilt. Since for the last few weeks I could not be bothered to sit at my sewing machine because of the heat and general lack of sewjo, I made the decision to use this Sunday and be productive again. I had an old Fabric Sample Book from Osborne & Little and I used those fabrics to make three tote bags today - easy and simple - but got me back sewing. Now I’m enjoying the cooler air of the evening on my balcony and watch your lovely video - life is good 🤩 Love to the Trueloves and all the best. Stefan 🥰

Jean, this was very helpful. I’ve only recently had a walking foot but am not very enamored with it. For most of my 80 years I’ve been a clothing sewer and have wanted to graduate to quilting but am hesitation’s because of the quilting part of it is intimidating to me. I’ve quilted smaller projects but think now I am ready to tackle something larger . Both of my grandmothers made quilts. Of course they didn’t have our modern conveniences. My maternal grandmother made hand quilted quilts on a treadle machine and wooden quilting frame. We’ve come a long way from that thank goodness. Well I’ve become a bit long winded here so I’ll conclude this missive and say thank you and I do enjoy and appreciate your videos.

You sound just like me!! I think it's called "Old Dog/New Tricks"!! LOL! I sew with the most basic of basics even though over the years, I have purchased new and improved and bigger and better and yet seem to go back to the basics of a simple machine that is a work horse!! I actually 'learned' on a treadle!! pumping the treadle below for my grandmother above!! Watching that leather pully/cord whirl round and round!! Thank you So much Wilma for a trip down memory lane:)

Good morning to you Jean from New Zealand. Hope you are all well. Your quilt is coming along beautifully. Yes, I did experience different fabrics with different weaves but at the end result was pretty good. I, too did not use a walking foot when I did my very first quilt in a ditch quilt. I did just like what you did on your quilt, easing the quilt as you go to avoid bunching up. It is a very good tip Jean. Look forward to see it once you have finished you free motion on the quilt 👍. It will be stunning!! Love to all, Thelma.

Interesting Jean. I have never secured my quilt top this way. I used to tack them but now just use safety pins. Still in the "stitch in the ditch" head space for the quilt I am currently making and having got to this stage with it am wondering if this method would minimize the corner bunching I sometimes get. I am a little (well a lot) nervous of securing the border edges first in case I get a bunch of material in the middle. I always assumed I had to start in the middle and work out? I will consider pondering which really means putting off starting to quilt till I talk myself into it. It must be lovely to look forward to free-motion quilting and I guess it just means starting to practice on smaller projects. Lovely to hear from you you always lighten my day.

You are so correct that a little deviation from the ditch does not matter. In fact, I free motion my stitching in the ditch so have quite a bit of wandering, but once the quilt has been washed it’s pretty much not noticeable.

Thanks for sharing Jean! I’m just curious why you prefer not to use a walking foot? I find them very easy to use and get great results with much less effort (don’t have to do all that easing of the fabric because all of the layers are fed into the machine evenly..hence the reason they are also called an Even-feed Foot.). Lately I have even been using my walking foot to do my regular piecing! But that might be taking it a bit too far! LOL
@lynnew.6802 жыл бұрын

I seem to remember seeing some KZbin videos of walking feet use, and thought it looked slow to me. I think though ultimately its a case of "old dog/new tricks" LOL! I have been sewing for over 50 years (garment sewing and then quilting for the last 15 years or so) and just expected the basics from each of my machines. I wasn't really interested in all the fancy schamncy computerized stuff or feet or attachments and the walking foot held no allure for me!! And now, I think I lost it!! LOL!

I find the walking foot slows my quilting down. I never use a walking foot either. My stitch regulator slows down my sewing/quilting too. My stitch regulator is not built into my Brother machine. It is an older stitch regulator. I always start my quilting in the exact middle of my quilt. I pin, flip quilt over, and pin again, and repeat two more times until my 3 layers are flat. Then I start in the middle to free motion quilt.

To bury the thread ends, thread a needle, sew from the spot the thread comes out of the fabric/pattern, run the thread between your layers, until the whole length is concealed, or come up at least 2 inches away and trim ends. This is a pain to do, the whole quilt is awkward to wrangle, so if you really don't want to, try another method... all the best.
